Poked around on Pubmed.gov a bit. Yikes! http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/entrez/query.f...l=pubmed_DocSum "Recent reports suggest that the ingestion of poorly processed cassava roots is associated with the incidence of an ataxic neuropathy (konzo) in African countries. When cassava-based diets are not supplemented with good sources of protein and iodine...

I don't want to give it up either just because it's in my favorite mixes. But the stomach pains are starting to irritate the heck out of me. The products that are starting to connect together for me are Pamela's Wheat Free Bread Mix, Pamela's Pancake mix and Kinnickinnick chocolate dipped donuts. I hate naming names because they're so good, but maybe...

Steve... Those pictures are beautiful ... It inspires me to get back to my camera. Thanks for sharing those. Nancy

There are a few gluten-free products, made by gluten-free companies, that have been bothering me. I finally found the common denominator and it seems to be tapioca. My daughter is actually reacting to a couple of the products (the two she eats) with the same symptoms. Basically whatever it is makes my stomach really hurt. Anyone else? ...

This is actually not a book (that I know of anyway). It's an article in a medical journal, which you can usually look at a small excerpt of (an abstract) on www.pubmed.gov. Which is a neat site to look at if you're into medical stuff. This one was published in the Journal of Neurology and Neurosurgery in May 2002. I was actually trying to look...

"Gunny" is what my dad was called when he was a Gunnery Sergeant in the Marine Corps. It's a common term of endearment, tempered with respect, that people of that rank are called. Kinda like "Sarge" for Sergeant. I think Gunny would be a cute nickname for a Gunther. Nancy

About a week ago I went and got my hair done. I took two Glutenease right before I went in. I got my hair colored, cut and styled. No limitations on products, just whatever she normally used (plenty of wheat and oats in the ingredients, of course). To make it especially interesting, I ended up with my hair in my mouth while she was blow-drying...

That's cool! It's actually a good sign that people would have a vague notion what it is or they wouldn't even use the word. All the recent publicity must be doing something. When it's on Saturday Night Live, or mentioned on the Top Ten List on Letterman, we'll know we have arrived. What was the joke? Nancy

ARCHIVED Anti Social When Glutened?
Nantzie replied to Slackermommy's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Yep. Completely antisocial, irritable, snappy, anxious, tired, headachy. I just don't want to deal with anyone. Nancy -
ARCHIVED Any Phd Chemists Out There?
Nantzie replied to Canadian Karen's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
I love the smell of tar too. My most favorite place we ever lived was on a Marine Corps base in Virginia, from ages 5-8. They used to tar the roofs on base housing ever other year. It was such a great neighborhood. We lived on the edge of base housing, up against a wooded area. Tons of kids, the great outdoors, completely safe neighborhood, and the... -
How fun! I ate a LOT of Thai Kitchen when I first got diagnosed. They have several different just-add-water type things. They use rice noodles, so they're gluten-free. I'm not sure if any of the pre-cooked chicken strips in the lunchmeat section are gluten-free, but I used to add some chicken to it to make it more of a full meal. Fresh fruit...

ARCHIVED Thinking About Having Another Baby
Nantzie replied to Nantzie's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Thanks for all the advice and encouragement guys. I know I must be starting to be serious about this. Yesterday my kids were in trouble more in one day than they have been in the last month. And I still was thinking about having more kids after all that. I'm going to see how I feel over the next couple months. The timing if I get pregnant... -
I always wanted 4 or 5 kids. We stopped at two because I was so sick and barely could take care of the two I had. I had planned on having them all close together, 1.5 - 2 years spacing. I figured I was done when my health started deteriorating. Now, over a year after going gluten-free, both of my kids and myself are gluten-free, and we have a gluten-free...

ARCHIVED Label Contradiction
Nantzie replied to MurrayM's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I'd guess that it's a typo. It's got to happen every once in a while. Either something didn't get listed in the ingredients, or the allergen info is wrong. Nancy -

ARCHIVED Ouzo?
Nantzie replied to nephlim's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I haven't had Ouzo for quite a while, and haven't had it since going gluten-free. My husband and I were introduced to it when we visited his uncle, who lives in Germany. Here's something I found on it at Open Original Shared Link "Ouzo is created using aniseed, fennel seed and other aromatic plants. It is a considered a traditional drink of... -
You guys are making me SOOO freaking hungry. I'm totally hormonal right now and if I eat something sweet, it makes me crave something salty, which makes me crave something chocolate which makes me crave something salty, then sweet. In the last hour or so I've had chocolate, cheetos and red wine. Yea, I think that qualifies as weird. NoGluGirl...

ARCHIVED Planning For Gluten Free Diet
Nantzie replied to Swthrtpookie's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
If you find that you do see improvement on the gluten-free diet, I'd say get yourself a breadmaker with a gluten-free setting. We have this breadmaker Open Original Shared Link and it is really easy. We like Pamela's Wheat Free Bread Mix and use it for everything from toast to sandwiches to french toast. It's soft and bendy and works great for sandwiches... -
ARCHIVED Has Anyone Been This Stupid ?
Nantzie replied to georgie's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
My kids were goldfish addicts too. This is what I did to off-set that when they went gluten-free. I found gluten-free crackers that they like - Ener-G Wheat Free Crackers, and put Easy Cheese (the spray cheese) on them. The bacon cheese flavor has gluten, but the others are gluten-free. It works out well for us. Putting a design on the cracker... -
I'd say I'd be both. I'm sure your parents must not have realized how serious it was. It's really common, even now, for people who are diagnosed with celiac to be told by their doctors to "try to avoid" wheat. People also saw the very thin body type as being the main problem with celiac, and what parents usually brought their children to the doctor for...

ARCHIVED Cadbury's Cream Eggs
Nantzie replied to Kyalesyin's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Keep in mind that something gluten-free in one country can have gluten in another country. There are at least a few conflicting products in the US vs. Canada, so I'm sure it's the same in the UK vs US. I found the UK Cadbury site's gluten-absent list. There are several Cadbury Eggs on the list - Open Original Shared Link This is their statement... -
ARCHIVED Has Anyone Been This Stupid ?
Nantzie replied to georgie's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
That reminds me of my one on-purpose glutening. Before my kids went gluten-free, my son had just eaten something gluteny and he came up and wanted to give me a kiss on the lips for the very first time in his life (he was almost 2.5). That glutening was worth it. Nancy -
Open Original Shared Link They called it an "allergy to wheat", but hey, it's in there. We're in the big time now! Nancy

ARCHIVED Alba Therapeutics-celiac Drug
Nantzie replied to UNCHeel's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
There were some discussions about this drug a while back, but hadn't seen any updates in a while. It's good to see that they've got all their study subjects and things are moving forward. Fingers crossed... Nancy
