  1. I think the only way to know is to try the gluten-free diet. I don't know if dyslexia can be caused by gluten, but I think it's entirely possible that if a person is sensitive to gluten, it could make a difficult situation worse. Personally, I never, EVER would have thought that my chronic pain had anything to do with gluten. I had heard some mention...
  2. Since you have seizures, I would DEFINITELY do a medical alert bracelet. Even if family is there with you, most likely they won't know all the specifics like you do. My stepmom has really severe hypoglycemia, and most likely wouldn't even survive being given a basic IV in the case of an accident. Her blood sugar dipped down into the high 30's when she...
  3. I'm sure this has been discussed, but since the search function on this board won't work on less than 4 characters, I'll have to make a new post. I've got my GI appt on Tuesday, and at this point, I think I'm basically just going to go in and report what I've figured out on my own. I doubt he'll want to go ahead with a biopsy since I'm firmly gluten...
  4. 12-step program??? I don't have a problem. I can stop whenever I want. Seriously. I'm not an addict. Why are you looking at me like that? Just call me Cleopatra... Everybody... Cuz I'm the Queen of De-Nile. Nancy
  5. I probably would at some point, but it would be like five years after it was released. Because, with all the drugs being pulled from the market in the last several years, I just don't think the FDA/drug companies are being as careful as they used to about verifying the safety. It seems like the first few years a drug is released is really the final phase...
  6. One of the things I've been missing a lot was graham crackers. Love graham crackers and frosting. And the thought of never being able to have s'mores again... Ugh... So I decided to figure out what the heck was in them to see if there was any hope of someday figuring out a recipe for them. When I looked up "graham flour" it turned out all it...
  7. Trust me Steph, you aren't the only person to ever eat frosting with a spoon. In fact, you probably weren't the only person at that party (or in that kitchen, or in this conversation...) to have eaten it with a spoon. And actually, I'm right now rigging up a gluten-free recipe for graham crackers so that I can have graham crackers and frosting ...
  8. I just wanted to point out that yes, it IS possible for the human body to live on very little (such as a banana and some water). Most women, at some point in their lives will do it, and do it SO SUCESSFULLY that they can create a healthy baby at the same time. Morning sickness!!! Most women have it during pregnancy, with many not being able to keep...
  9. My MIL is German. Her best friend's daughter came over as an exchange student a few years ago. At the barbeque we had to welcome her to America, one of my MIL's American friends brought a German Chocolate Cake. It was so funny because they were looking at Daniella very expectantly, as if she would consider it a "taste of home". It turned out she had...
  10. I've heard of leaky gut, but haven't looked into it yet. Is it something an M.D. would know about, or is it more a naturopath type of issue?
  11. Have you and your naturopath explored the possibility of candida overgrowth? The first naturopath I ever went to never mentioned a thing about it and he wasn't able to help with any of my tummy problems in the three months I went to him. He was trying, it just wasn't helping. Then I went to another naturopath who told me that he thought I had candida...
  12. Yep, hyper and aggitated. If I get glutened later in the evening and then try to go to sleep, there's no way. It's like I'm buzzing. And not "buzzing", but like an internal vibration almost. And my brain goes 100 miles an hour and I get aggitated. Before I knew about gluten, I just thought I was frustrated because I couldn't sleep. But once I went...
  13. I've had a huge reduction in my sweet tooth. It's not completely gone, but I'm a lot more choosy about what I'll eat because a lot of stuff is just disgustingly sweet now. And when I do want something sweet, I don't want very much. A few bites is more than plenty. Nancy
  14. I also think that men either don't go to the doctor or they just don't talk about stuff. I was telling one of my friends about celiac, and it turns out her stepdad was diagnosed with it as a baby and has had it all this time. We've even been on vacation with her whole family a few times and never knew he had any food issues. He just nicely says no thanks...
  15. Good point Elonwy! I can get really emotional and angry and nobody-loves-me when I get glutened too. Maybe it is a reaction of some kind. AND, on doing research into the DQ1 0602 gene, I found that they're doing some research into that being a link to schizophrenia (which my favorite grandmother had), so she may be 0602 and having some pretty intense...
  16. A Theory -- Since this user's other post was just a normal, run-of-the-mill, new person question, with normal responses and follow-ups by the original poster, it makes me wonder if this message was posted not by a disgruntled user, but by a user's arrogant child, or roommate, or spouse, or whatever. The tone of the first message just doesn't match the...
  17. I was looking at my email and was checking out the email I got from Top Secret Recipes. I've been on their mailing list for years now. I've just never bothered with it because (pre-gluten-free) I always figured that it's easier and cheaper just to go buy the thing than to get all the ingredients to make it yourself. But today, I realized that this...
  18. Well, I've been gluten free pretty much since the end of December. I thought it would be easy to keep eating gluten during Christmas, but it wasn't. Once I did a couple of few-day trials off gluten just to make sure I was barking up the right tree, it was a slippery slope to gluten free. I kept doing a few days off here and there, planning going off...
  19. I've always had a hard time falling asleep. I even remember as a little kid crying because I was so tired and couldn't fall asleep. I've also had problems with memory and concentration since I was about that age. I was never tested for ADD, but I'd bet if I were I'd have been diagnosed with it. Now that I've been gluten free, I can guarantee if I...
  20. How wonderful to have a teacher who will stand up for you like that! I'm glad you were able to talk to her about it. Nancy
  21. I'll second the Alpsnack bars. I used to love Kashi bars (gluten filled), all whole grains and nuts all stuck together with sweet, yummy goodness. So I was thrilled to find the Alpsnack bars. They're very small, but they're also filling, so they're perfect. I'll usually have an Alpsnack bar and a piece of fruit for breakfast, and I'm good til lunch....
  22. Yea, it's no fun to get pregnant right away. You miss out on all those "playing hookey because you're ovulating" days. Just don't giggle when you "call in sick". Have fun! Nancy
  23. Yep, talk to your teacher about it. It sounds like that mean teacher just needs to be told what's going on. People like that are the hardest thing about celiac or gluten sensitivity. Nancy
  24. You've got WAY more patience than me. I was at Rite Aid buying the First Response test the first day I was late. I've got my fingers and toes crossed for ya! Nancy
  25. How COOL!!!! We haven't seen you on here lately. I was just wondering how you're doing the other day. I'm glad you're feeling so much better. Keep us updated on how your church trip goes. What a great thing to do. I feel totally different since going gluten-free too. I feel like I've just gotten out for parole or something. I've found that I actually...
