  1. Hi! Welcome to the board, this is a great place to be. Personally, we stay away from products that are made in the same facility as wheat. I've tried them, but my dd reacts every time. The nutritionist is correct that you never know 100% of the time if a processed products has contamination, but if it made in the same facility as wheat....that definately...
  2. We drink Almond Breeze too.....it is by far our favorite, and most easily tolerated milk sub. I use coconut milk for baking occasionally, and it works. There is also a new milk beverage out that is a drinkable coconut milk, by So Delicious. It is getting really great reviews, but I haven't been able to find it yet. The So Delicious coconut yogurt is...
  3. Just out of curiosity.......working with elementary kids, do you find it hard to keep from getting glutened? I just ask b/c I am up at the school quite a bit, and at lunch time, I swear I can see the crumbs a flyin', lol. Yesterday, the little girl sitting next to my dd was smushing her cookies in her mouth all at once...then at one point, she started throwing...
  4. I've always been anxiety ridden....and I find that it comes back in full force with a glutening. I used to worry incessantly about the smallest things, always. Since I've gone gluten free, I have found that I'm much more calm and even. Cutting out dairy has helped too.....especially with sleeping. But yes, losing my marbles would be a nice way to describe...
  5. I don't know anything about 504 plans, but I'm having school issues as well. My dd is younger, she's in 1st grade, and I just found out today that everything I gave the school in August never made it into her file. I got a call this morning from the lunch lady, saying that the speech therapist wanted to give the kids an ice cream for their last day of...
  6. I'm so happy for you! I too have one child that tested positive after being very, very sick for a long time. Not too long after that, I ended up putting all my kids on the diet even though their tests were negative. We saw such positive results, we haven't looked back since! Hope you continue to see improvement, it's great to see the progress happen so...
  7. Thanks for the link.....these are a great idea! Not something I would buy alot of, but perfect for a special treat for the kids, they would get a HUGE kick out of this. I know they get tired of always bringing a home packed meal. This would be a nice surprise, thanks again!
  8. I don't have alot more to add, except that I am finding comfort that there are other parents who have children that are as sensitive as my daughter. I'm actually thinking of taking this step too, I'm noticing a trend of reactions that occur after I give her something that is "made in a facility" or made by a company that also makes wheat products, even...
  9. We've eaten the Rice chex w/out problems too....maybe it's just something about the corn. Who knows, I threw them out today after my dd tore apart her room in a tantrum! I love that all these mainstream companies are coming out with gluten free products, but part of me is still a little skeptical. Gluten free is very trendy right now, and I can't help...
  10. Funny, a couple of years ago I would have been over the moon happy about Betty Crocker gluten free mixes. But now, I've become so used to homemade versions that are so good, I don't think I'd go back to mixes anymore. Even my husband has said that as long as the flour mix is mixed up, homemade is only a few more steps than a mix. But, this is still...
  11. I was lucky that our pedi GI did think my daughter was Celiac right off the bat....but she also looked like the textbook case that you hear about. However, after hearing she was positive, I asked about the whole family getting tested. He said "oh no, that 's not necessary unless there are symptoms" and went on to make me feel like a crazy person for asking...
  12. Maybe that is it......we really don't eat alot of grains b/c they just seem to cause tummy aches for everyone. I didn't even think to put cereal in the grain category, lol. We all have pretty sensitive stomachs, so that makes alot of sense. Thanks so much!
  13. Nevermind, I checked the GM site, and the malt was replaced with molasses. That's good to know....but I am noticing that my dd seems to react to alot of mainstream products that are gluten free by the "standards", but made by companies that produce wheat products as well. This makes navigating the gluten free world a little trickier, if you're a Celiac...
  14. I hate to even think this, b/c we luuuuuurve the new Chex, especially the Honey Nut, and I am thrilled to have new cereal. But, my little girl has been showing signs of gluten exposure, and this is the only new thing we've added recently. We've had the Rice Chex before, but this is the first time we've eaten ALOT of Chex. Since we found the new flavors...
  15. This is still a struggle for me.....I'm really, really shy and any attention on me makes me uncomfortable. So shy that I actually begged people NOT to throw me baby showers, lol. So getting bombarded with questions about a disease that causes mainly GI symptoms for me? I'd rather stick hot pins in my eyes honestly. But, I try my hardest in hopes that...
  16. It definately sounds like it could be Celiac, I would have him tested. I am small too (4'10"), and b/c of my size, I had a hard time getting any doctors to take my dd's lack of growth seriously. It was always blamed on genetics. After finally finding a doctor to test her, she came back positive. It's been a few years now, and I have found out that I...
  17. I just realized after 2 weeks of feeling like total crap, that the shampoo I've been using (Biolage) has wheat germ in it. I usually check, but my mom gave it to me and I started using it w/out thinking. It dawned on me this morning that I never checked the ingredients, and there it was. I'm happy I know now, since I've been stumped as to why I have been...
  18. I've been wanting to branch out lately and try some recipes using nutritional yeast.....I saw a yummy macaroni and cheese recipe that I want to try. That is the one thing my kids really miss since going casein free a couple of years ago. The only brand I can find at the health food stores though is Red Star, which is manufactured on the same lines as...
  19. How long had your daughter been on the diet before the vomiting started?? She still has inflammation if her SED rate is high. Just a word of warning, the medical community (most doctors, nurses, etc) for the most part really do not have a clue about Celiac. I've worked in pedi hospitals for a few years now, I've actually been in the room when a doctor...
  20. My daughter never vomited (although she does now if she ingests gluten) before her diagnosis, but she did have very foul gas, with large and bulky stools. She was 2 1/2 and we could not even begin to potty train her b/c she was having so many blowout diapers. I think it would definately be worth a shot to have him tested for Celiac. Hope that helps...
  21. Well, children's weight can vary, but you also have to look at the child's history. Weight alone isn't the only factor to consider. Red flags should go up if the child continues to fall behind on the growth chart. You can have a small child who is consistantly in the 20th percentile (like my very healthy 2 year old), she is small, and I won't worry unless...
  22. I think she definately should get tested. My little girl stopped gaining weight at 12months of age.....she was 3 years old and 20 pounds. Yet it still took a while to get a doctor to test her, every symptom could be explained away by something else. She was always irritable, but everyone said it was just terrible two's. She was so skinny and small, but...
  23. My son was diagnosed with psoriatic arthritis about a month ago....similar to rheumatoid, just called psoriatic if you have psoriasis. I was bummed b/c I had kept him gluten free for the past couple of years in hopes of improving his psoriasis, and hoping to prevent more auto immune diseases from popping up. I've had to realize that diet doesn't cure...
  24. Hang in there! We are four years into the diet, and SO many things have changed for us. I think for many families, it is a turning point and you eventually adopt an overall healthier lifestyle. It is such a major adjustment, let yourself go through all the stages. I stilll remember spending ages in the store and coming home with virtually nothing, and...
  25. While I can see why some would be excited about this......I can't get on board either. I already feel blessed that this disease has a natural cure, and I'll take that over messing around with my immune system anyday. This diet is a pain at times, and inconvenient yes, but our lives have changed for the better in SO many ways, I wouldn't change a thing...
