  1. I only have my experience to go by......my daughter was diagnosed at 3, and before that time she starting showing symptoms a little after 12 months. By the time she entered pre-k, she was behind the other kids. Her teachers recommended we wait a year to send her to kindergarten b/c she had very little alphabet or number recognition, and there were other...
  2. After my daughter was diagnosed, we followed up with the GI 6 months later for a repeat blood test and weight check. Then we followed up two more times, mainly just to check in, have her weighed, and to answer any questions I may have. It's been 3 years, and he said we can check in once a year now. Our regular pedi has done some additional blood work for...
  3. Add me to the list of people who can't drink anymore, lol. Gluten free beer, and all wines have made me sick ever since I had my third child. Something changed, I have no clue what, but something changed. I can have one glass, and still have what feels like a terrible hangover the entire next day. I can handle drinks like Jack Daniels a little better...
  4. My dd was dx'd 3 1/2 years ago, and we are pretty much free and clear of the pedi GI unless she starts showing other symptoms. We had the initial biopsy, then one follow up blood test 6 months later to make sure her antibodies had decreased. That's been pretty much it for us! We checked in every 6 months for two years just to make sure she was gaining...
  5. Don't beat yourself up, we have all done it! My parents had the kids over one weekend, and my dad picked up a box of Van's Waffles, thinking they were all gluten free. My dad was nearly in tears when he called to tell me that Emmie was sick. My dd does the same thing, hours of vomiting. It is hard to watch....but she'll recover, and so will you!
  6. I know it can be a problem if you are trying to get private health insurance. My husband was going to take a new job, but it was with a small company that only offered to contribute to private health insurance. There were 3 companies to chose from, two of which flat out refused to cover my Celiac daughter. Aetna would cover her, but at a higher premium...
  7. I don't think there's really any "typical" Celiac....we all have different stories, some kids deteriorate fast, some slow...some are totally symptom free but still have damage and come up with a positive diagnosis due to family history, short stature, anemia, or even a skin rash. I feel like my dd is pretty much classic Celiac, but she still never had...
  8. I think gluten does get absorbed through the skin, even if doctors say otherwise. Last time I tried to use Bath and Body Works lotion, which contains oats, I first got a skin rash, then I had gastro symptoms after a week of using it. My dd, she reacts with a typical gluten reaction (upset stomach, irritable, etc) with shampoo that has gluten in it. It...
  9. It could be so many different things....the first few months gluten free are difficult. You mentioned lactaid milk...is he drinking that??? Many Celiacs find that they have difficulty tolerating any milk products at all after going gluten free. I tried Lactaid with my kids, and they still reacted, but not until they went gluten free for a while. It...
  10. I too would avoid the soy milk....if you do some research, soy is not the health product it proclaims to be (at least not in the form marketed as milk). My kids never tolerated it anyway, and they always seemed to look so unhealthy and scrawny when they were on it. What we use now is Almond Breeze, but we don't use much. It is expensive, so they each...
  11. I just read on a blog that he's also going to have a gluten free show tomorrow, Oct 7th at 8:30 EST. Might be the same one, not sure...but this one sounded a bit different. Anyhow, this is great!
  12. Is there a number you can call??? It looks like it would be fine, but I would try to double check if you can. I wouldn't worry about the modified corn starch, if it were wheat they would have to list it. But I would call if you can find an 800 number, I always feel a bit better if I can talk to a live person. I have used Wilton's icing in the past, but...
  13. I agree that it does sound like gluten. Especially if she was at a friends house......I always get nervous if my kids eat at someone else's house. It is hard for someone to truly understand cross contamination issues, and the gluten free lifestyle unless you actually have to live it. My parents and I are very close, and my kids spend alot of time over...
  14. My kids are all gluten and casein free....and lunches are definately my biggest challenge. I just bought them each a FUNtainer by Thermos, which has been great. I preheat with boiling water in the morning, and food is still smoking hot at lunchtime. We do leftover spaghetti, Dinty Moore beef stew, chicken and rice, Thai Kitchen rice noodles (they come...
  15. Reading all of this worries me a bit. As it is, I am having to work more just to cover the increase in food prices. I am spending close to $100 more a week on food than I was just a few months ago. For our family of 6 (all gluten-free/cf except hubby) I am spending around $900+ on food each month. It is killing us, and I don't splurge on much of the specialty...
  16. We just do a probiotic and cod liver oil. I think the most important supplement is a probiotic....these kids have had their good gut flora wiped out. Restoring the good guys will give her a boost to healing, and will help improve her immune system. Personally, I've never had much success with iron supplements for the kids. I only found one or two vitamins...
  17. Just wanted to add to the list of people already suggesting cutting out the milk. (And forgive me if you already have, I haven't read through all the posts yet, lol) My 4 year old was getting constant ear infections, one right after the other until I took out all casein. He has not had a single ear infection since I took him off dairy. Still baffles...
  18. Yep, just like what everyone else said. I used to be a huge Bath & Body Works addict, but most of their stuff contains oats and I most definately reacted to their products. I didn't react right away, but after a few days my stomach was not happy, and neither was my itchy red skin, lol. I need to find some new products, I have safe makeup from Bare...
  19. Ditto...please don't take him to CiCi's!!!! Most kids don't get very sick with gluten until it is all out of their system, which can take weeks or more. My dd never had diarrhea or vomiting either......but she gets violently ill with gluten now. If the biopsy showed blunted villi, his system is not absorbing nutrients, which is setting his little body...
  20. That is great! It is a wonderful feeling to watch your child feel well for the first time....I still remember the moment vividly even though it was 3 years ago. My husband and I realized about the same time that Emmie was playing by herself. This was huge for her, and it was the first time in about 2 years that she wasn't in my arms or stuck to me like...
  21. Love your recipes! I am a huge coconut flour and oil fan, so keep these recipes coming. I am in constant amazement at how you guys come up with these recipes off the top of your head. I've come a long way from cooking out of a box, but I still can't quite get myself to just wing it and see how it goes, lol.
  22. It sounds like you have tried all of the testing you can try....the time from 0-3 years is a very crucial developmental period, and I wouldn't hesitate to try the diet. My dd did not get diagnosed until she was 3, after 2 years of decline and increasing symptoms. Every doctor I saw told me she was just small, but I knew something was wrong. She did test...
  23. I just wanted to add that I would give it more time too.....I think everyone makes little mistakes in the beginning. My little girl was tiny as well, she was 3 years old and weighed less than she did at 12 months. She was only 20 pounds, had the big belly and skinny arms. It is only now, looking back at pictures, that I can see how sick she really was...
  24. The beginning of the school year is always tough. We have meet the teacher night tonight, and I have to get my letters and such ready to handout to everyone. I really dread this time of year, not knowing if the new teachers are really going to "get it" or not. Last year, we had several occasions where teachers gave my daughter regular food, even though...
  25. This is something we struggled with alot last year. We actually got "the letter" that all parents get when their kids have missed 10 or more days. No action was ever taken though, although we were ready for it....especially since the weeks where she was absent the most were b/c two different teachers had actually given her gluten, lol. I may be too...
