ARCHIVED "gluten Free" Items That "got You"
taweavmo3 replied to NorthernElf's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
We are a sensitive bunch here too. I have had to become super vigilant in the processed foods we decide to eat, b/c my dd has not grown at all in a year. I suspect (no one shoot me down who loves their Chex) it was the small amount of gluten she was getting in Chex and other gluten free products. All Chex Van's waffles Lays Amy's frozen meals (we... -
I actually love my magnesium & calcium supplement! It seriously puts me out like a light at night, and when I stop taking it I can tell a big difference in how I feel overall. I take a liquid form, in a 2:1 ratio.....I like the liquid b/c it's easily adjustable to avoid the laxative effect. Maybe trying a different brand might help?

ARCHIVED Celiac Disease And Swine Flu
taweavmo3 replied to strawberrygm's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I completely agree, it is too new, and I don't think the potential risks outweigh the benefits for otherwise healthy patients. I won't be getting the vaccine for myself or my kids. I don't think Celiac puts us at anymore risk for the swine flu or seasonal flu. Those that have a greater risk factor for complications do so b/c they have impaired immune... -
ARCHIVED 3 Year Old Who Is Still Isnt Gaining Weight
taweavmo3 replied to katifer's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
One more thing I thought of....do you give him soy milk? I used to give that to my kids too, but it was hindering their weight gain. Many kids who can not tolerate dairy also can not tolerate soy. Hope you get some help, good luck! -
ARCHIVED 3 Year Old Who Is Still Isnt Gaining Weight

What really ticks me off about Rice Dream, is that before their new boxes were labeled gluten free, they had the barley malt listed. It was in very small print, but at least Celiacs could make the choice to ingest the .002% of barley malt or not. Once they could claim "gluten free", the barley malt information dissapeared. They purposely witheld information... -

Could gluten be sneaking in through some processed foods?? I have a really sensitive little girl, and we've had to cut out alot of processed foods due to cross contamination issues. She can't eat Rice Chex, even those made her sick. There were some chicken nuggets a while back that were labeled gluten free, but some had over 2000 ppm of gluten. Things... -
ARCHIVED gluten-free/cf Calcium Supplements For Children
taweavmo3 replied to jello5's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
From some of the articles I've read, it's the magnesium. Low mg levels can cause restless sleep, and it brings the body's pH level to a more alkaline state, which is calming. Or something like that, lol, I'm sure a more scientific person could explain it better! But yeah, we always take it at night, and it works wonders for us. -
ARCHIVED gluten-free/cf Calcium Supplements For Children
taweavmo3 replied to jello5's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I have two different supplements that we use. I have Rhino calcium by Nutrition Now, and we also use Bluebonnet ca/mg liquid supplement. The Bluebonnet is liquid, and even though it isn't for kids.....I just half the dose, which has been approved by our ped. With a half dose, it's 600mg of calcium, 400 IU of Vit D3, and 300mg magnesium. After doing... -
ARCHIVED Warning Walmart Gv Product No Longer gluten-free!
taweavmo3 replied to hipretty's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I get what you are saying...I think it's good to give a heads up. I got sick from a bottle of walmart soy sauce a few weeks ago, it said gluten free. Now I see that their newly labeled bottles have wheat listed. Did my bottle actually have wheat but was not newly labeled yet? Who knows, but it did make me question walmarts labeling practices a bit more... -
ARCHIVED Budget For Groceries
taweavmo3 replied to taweavmo3's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Wow....you guys rock! That is why I so love this board, always full of great ideas. I think I can get a bit more creative and do even better, but now I feel good about what I do spend. Thanks so much for the tips, much appreciated. -
ARCHIVED Budget For Groceries
taweavmo3 replied to taweavmo3's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Thanks for the link....there are some good budget stretching menu ideas. Now that my kids are getting a bit older, I can try going back to casserole or stew type dishes. Before, the kids would never eat food that "touched each other", lol. I can get two meals out of one whole chicken if I make something like chicken pot pie or chicken enchiladas (we just... -
ARCHIVED New Here...need Some Help!
taweavmo3 replied to fotochic03's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Based on his insatiable appetite, stool descriptions, and low weight , I would say it sounds like something is still causing malaborption. I think it's a great plan to try the gluten free diet. My dd, before she was diagnosed, would eat constantly. It was a joke in our house, b/c she was tiny, but she ate adult sized portions. One thing you also might... -
I am so sorry....I'm just getting over a cc glutening, which was pretty short thank goodness. I remember the last time I was majorly glutened, it was the Walmart soy sauce that now has wheat. I was sick for 3-4 days before I could eat anything more than jello or white rice, but it took a couple of weeks before I really felt decent again. It just plain...

ARCHIVED Budget For Groceries
taweavmo3 replied to taweavmo3's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Sweet! I never thought to break it down like that. We've been gluten free for so long, and have added two kids since going on the diet, so I have NO clue what a "realistic" food budget is for a family our size. I used to think adding dairy back in would save us money, but I've realized cutting dairy is actually cheaper (not to mention less doctor visits... -
ARCHIVED Budget For Groceries

I'm looking for some budgeting ideas regarding food. We are all gluten free & dairy free...it's my husband and myself, and four kids. I *think* I have it down to as inexpensive as I can get, but I still feel like I am spending a small fortune on food! We probably come out ahead in the long run, since we really don't spend much a year on doctors visits... -
ARCHIVED Name That Gluten!
taweavmo3 replied to taweavmo3's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Yeah, the more I think about it...I think it's the Hershey chocolate syrup. It may just be a trace amount, that has built up over the course of the week, and finally made us really sick today. Two days ago, I was getting heart palpitations, that is usually my first sign of a glutening, even before the stomach issues pop up. My dd has been cranky and... -
ARCHIVED Name That Gluten!

My dd are sick today, and I'm trying to figure out just where the source of gluten came from. We've tried several new things this week, with school starting and all...and that always gets me. Anyway, here is the small list of new things we've had that may have glutened us. Hershey's chocolate syrup Pop Weaver microwave popcorn (from walmart) Planters... -
ARCHIVED Very High Hdl Cholesterol
taweavmo3 replied to elle's mom's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
I won't shoot you down, I agree with you. I read somewhere that new evidence is coming out that cholesterol levels are indicative of inflammation, and is actually a protective reaction by the body. Hence, cholesterol lowering drugs do nothing to help the underlying problem, just help the numbers and may put pateints at greater risk. My mom is on these... -
ARCHIVED Chex Honey Nut gluten-free
taweavmo3 replied to Liddle4's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Same here....we had been eating the Rice Chex and the other varieties for a few months. Over time, I began getting GI symptoms, and my dd was very irritable, tired, all her classic gluten symptoms. Now that we quit eating chex all together, we are back to normal. I was really dissapointed, b/c we were so excited to be able to eat regular cereal again... -
ARCHIVED School Lunches
taweavmo3 replied to annofthejungle's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Can't believe another school year is right around the corner already! Two of my kids love bread, but it has to be homemade or they won't touch it. Last year I splurged and bought the kids a Thermos. It has been the best investment for school lunches....if I put boiling water in it for 10 minutes to preheat (then dump out and add food) then it stays hot... -
ARCHIVED One Dr. Uses Wine Sensitivity As Health "gauge"
taweavmo3 replied to babysteps's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
That is interesting. After I had my third baby, I couldn't drink anymore. Even if I only had one drink, I would feel completely hungover the next day. I still have no clue what could have caused that, but even after 5 years, one more baby, and the gluten-free/cf diet, I still can't drink anymore w/out getting sick the next day. -
ARCHIVED Anybody With Slow Weight Gain? Or Long Lulls In Growing?
taweavmo3 replied to MarsupialMama's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I have a tiny girl....she is healthy now, but still tiny. She was on the growth charts briefly about a year after she was diagnosed (at age 3 ), but now at age 7, she has fallen off again. She looks healthy though, and everything else seems okay, so maybe it is just genetics this time. I'm small, I'm only 4'10", hubby is average height at 5'10", so maybe... -
ARCHIVED Does The Insomnia Get Better?
taweavmo3 replied to no-more-muffins's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
I haven't had time to read the other posts, so forgive me if someone already suggested this! If gluten free alone doesn't help, you might try eliminating dairy, if you haven't already. I have slept much better since dairy free....and if I indulge and have cheese on pizza, my sleep suffers terribly. I have a fitful sleep, vivid dreams, and wake up all... -
ARCHIVED Is It Ok To Use Shampoo/soap W/ Gluten?
taweavmo3 replied to jasonD2's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Like everyone said, it's different for everyone. Personally, I have become sick from shampoo with wheat. I inevitably get some in my mouth, and although it doesn't make me sick right away, over the period of a few weeks, it does. It took me a while to figure that one out. It's easy enough to find shampoos w/out wheat...Suave will clearly list wheat... -
ARCHIVED Boston's Pizza Not Dedicated!
taweavmo3 replied to cbear6301's topic in Gluten-Free Restaurants
We are a sensitive bunch, but we didn't have any problems with Boston's. We really don't eat out much at all, maybe once every couple of months or so. I figure we are always taking a risk when eating out, but it's a chance we take for a splurge and a much needed night out!
