ARCHIVED Rice Chex Cereal!
taweavmo3 replied to kim26's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I've only been able to find it at Super Walmart so far. I'm not in Dallas though, I'm in Mckinney. I have also noticed that the old Rice Chex at other grocery stores are all on sale, like they are getting ready for the new boxes. I'm sure they'll be everywhere pretty soon. -
ARCHIVED The American Idol Thread...2008
taweavmo3 replied to blueeyedmanda's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
I believe the AC on his guitar stands for Adam Cook, his brother who has cancer. There was a small article in People magazine about it. I SO love David Cook, I thought he was great last night. I am usually a big Brooke fan, but I couldn't even finish watching her sing that first song. It was terrible, but the second time around she did better. I don't... -
ARCHIVED Any Vegan Or Vegaterians
taweavmo3 replied to Nic's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Can he have soy? We don't do alot of soy, but every now and then I'll make smoothies and add silken tofu. It has the consistancy of thick yogurt, and I just add some strawberries, pineapple, banana and honey. The kids love it. If you don't want to do soy, you could also make a smoothie using hemp protein powder. The only problem with the hemp powder... -
ARCHIVED Rice Chex Cereal!
taweavmo3 replied to kim26's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I just found some boxes at Target last night....says Gluten Free on the box (right on the front too, not on the side in microscopic print, lol)! Yay. And I'm happy to see that it is fortified with 50% DV iron. It's so nice to have more and more cereal choices, they make great on the go snacks for the kids, or mix-ins for a trail mix. -
ARCHIVED Home From School, Again
taweavmo3 replied to OBXMom's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I completely agree with Ursa......seriously consider cutting out dairy and soy if you haven't already. My kids had constant colds and ear infections until we cut out all dairy. They have gone nearly all winter without so much as a cough. I have tried to add it back in, and they always end up with runny noses. Dairy is a known mucus producer. For calcium... -
ARCHIVED Severely Glutened?
taweavmo3 replied to kim26's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
My guess would be the fries.....I have found very few fast food places that have safe fries for my dd. Also, if she was just diagnosed, her reactions will most likely get stronger the longer she is gluten free. My dd didn't react visibly to gluten before getting diagnosed. But after a few months into the diet, she became very sensitive to trace amounts... -
For those of you that suffer with Psoriatic Arthritis.....I'm wondering if my son could be developing this. He's had Psoriasis since he was 3, now he's 9. Over the past few months, he's complained of knee pain. It just comes and goes, but hasn't lasted long enough for me to be really concerned. But this morning he was in pain. He was walking, and then...

ARCHIVED Psoriasis/psoriatic Arthritis/coeliac
taweavmo3 replied to Graceanna's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
I think there is most definately a link.....my 8 year old has had psoriasis for 5 years. We have Celiac in the family, but he tested negative. I put him on the diet anyway, and although it hasn't cleared up, it is under control with steroid cream and Dovonex (expensive stuff!!). He does react to gluten now, but he reacts differently than my daughter. She... -
ARCHIVED When It Rains, It Pours....now 3 Year Old
taweavmo3 replied to kim26's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I would definately keep a close eye on him, and consider testing at some point. My dd was dx'd first, then I noticed symptoms in my other children. However, my other children were not as obviously sick as my dd had been. The boys just had loose stools, but never diarrhea. They also displayed skin issues (eczema, then psoriasis) and behavioral issues.... -
ARCHIVED Sports Snacks
taweavmo3 replied to Worriedtodeath's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
We have been really lucky, we were asked to only bring fruit for the half time snack. I was surprised by how much the boys loved orange halves!. When it was our turn, I packed two big ziplock bags, one with apple slices (soaked in fruit fresh), the other with orange slices. Alot of parents would also bring the crap snacks though for after the game.... -
ARCHIVED Food - As Rewards / Food For Pets
taweavmo3 replied to 2kids4me's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Yes, that's what we do now. But, if you want your child to have a hot lunch from the line, you can not dictate what your child can choose for their three items allowed. Alot of parents were upset by it, it's a new rule that was put in place about 3 or 4 years ago. A teacher is not allowed to guide a child's food choices either. So, there were some days... -
ARCHIVED Food - As Rewards / Food For Pets
taweavmo3 replied to 2kids4me's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I totally agree!!!!! My kids bring home lovely pictures of the food pyramid, complete with a handy cookbook for healthy treats. Then they are bombarded with total junk for rewards or parties. And alot of it is the parents....I had one room mom who did not like my selected class snack of Fruit A Bu, so she decided the kids also needed Little Debbies. And... -
ARCHIVED Who Here Eats Oats? Safe?
taweavmo3 replied to Eric-C's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Well after weeks of saying "I'll never risk it", I bought a bag of gluten free oats. I figured several Celiacs around here must be tolerating them okay, b/c they sell out as soon as they are stocked. I had a bowl and felt fine, but I'm not as sensitive as my daughter. I still can't bring myself to give them to her....she is so sensitive, and reactions... -
ARCHIVED Need To Make Breakfast For 22 Kids
taweavmo3 replied to Lizz7711's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I didn't change anything, I just added half a can of pumpkin puree. I was going to add more, but I wasn't sure how the texture would come out. I am so not a baker, I'm terrified of changing ratios. Too many gluten free baking tries gone bad I suppose, lol. I'm sure you could play around with it some and add more pumpkin. I personally like the shredded... -
ARCHIVED Need To Make Breakfast For 22 Kids
taweavmo3 replied to Lizz7711's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I wanted to second the vote for Namaste spice cake muffins. I've added pureed pumpkin to the mix before too, and they come out great. These muffins are awesome, plus it would be easy for you, and a cinch for the kids to eat. You are one brave woman to bring breaky for the entire class! -
ARCHIVED Ccd Teacher Got Me Upset Today
taweavmo3 replied to Nic's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
We had a very similar incident happen with my dd's kindergarten teacher. I was running late for the party, the teacher gave her a regular cookie, then said "oh wait, don't eat that". BUT, she didn't take it away. The teacher acted like Emmie just should have known better, and not eaten the cookie. What else are kids going to do when such goodies are... -
ARCHIVED Symptoms In Children
taweavmo3 replied to 7mommy's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Based on all those symptoms, I would definately pursue testing for you and your children. Especially with all of the auto immune diseases in your family as well. The test for you son may come back negative, since he's on a limited amount of gluten. That's the only bugger with testing, you have to load them up with gluten in order to make them sick enough... -
ARCHIVED Going Gluten Free Without A Diagnosis
taweavmo3 replied to Nic's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I have had my 8 year old gluten/casein free for two years, and so far I haven't had any issues with the school. We had the option at one point to let the school make special accomodations for him in the lunchline, and that did require a physcian's letter. But he brings his lunch each day anyway, so it hasn't been a problem. I just talk to his teacher's... -
ARCHIVED New Here - My Three Year Old Is Just Diagnosed
taweavmo3 replied to kellyanna-99's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Welcome to the board! This is a great place to begin, I have learned so much in the past few years. Like others have said, I think if you have a doctor willing to diagnose your dd on blood test and diet response alone, go for it. In my experience, most doctors will not do that until you have a positive biopsy. I have one daughter who is biopsy diagnosed... -
ARCHIVED Michael Update
taweavmo3 replied to crittermom's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Yay! Sounds like you have your answer...and I too am glad you will stick to your guns even if the doc doesn't quite agree. I haven't had a doctor yet get on board with me putting the other kids on the diet w/out a positive biopsy, but they are much happier w/out gluten. I think we moms have a difficult enough job as it is...we don't need gluten induced... -
ARCHIVED ? About Dairy Reactions
taweavmo3 replied to buffettbride's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
My kids all have varying reactions.....my two boys have dry skin patches pop up (my 8 year old also has psoriasis) after they've had dairy. If they've had a big dairy infraction, like when dh got them ice cream, lol, that's when they have loose or green stools. Small bits of cheese don't seem to cause any reaction. My dd who has speech delays seems to... -
ARCHIVED Fever After Gluten
taweavmo3 replied to bekalu's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Yes, my dd also runs a fever after a glutening. She has gone as high as 104, and it usually starts a couple of days after the accident. -
ARCHIVED B12 Supplement
taweavmo3 replied to taweavmo3's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I read the back of the bottle last night, and sure enough.....it says that Niacin can cause temporary flushing and burning due to capillary dilation. Good to know, it just really threw me! Last week I broke out in hives and never found the cause. My skin has not been behaving recently, lol. I've only had hives once in my life as a teenager, from some... -
ARCHIVED B12 Supplement
taweavmo3 posted a topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Ack! This has never happened to me before. I took a B12 supplement which is a liquid, and placed it under my tongue. Now I am bright red ALL over, my skin is on fire and my ears seriously feel like they are pulsating. Otherwise, I'm fine, lol. Anyone ever have this happen??? I've taken this a million times before, with no problems. I don't know why... -
ARCHIVED School - I Need To Vent
taweavmo3 replied to ckmom's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Thanks....we do have an IEP, and I have talked to a slew of people at the school about her. The school nurse also assured me everyone would keep a close eye on her. I sent in multiple copies of letters regarding Celiac, what it does to her, what she can't eat, etc. Argh, it's very aggravating. I think her teacher just got really busy handing out the...
