ARCHIVED Ballpark/picnic Snacks
mookie03 replied to Mo92109's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Last year i generally brought trail mix to the games (and a lot of it!!) Nuts are filling and satiating and VERY easy to bring along. Also, most of the soft serve at ballparks ive been to is gluten-free, so thats a nice snack alternative. Last night i went to a game and got peanuts...mmm....Also you could bring along carrots or berries or something healthy... -
ARCHIVED Ignorant Server Of The Day
mookie03 replied to floridanative's topic in Gluten-Free Restaurants
I went to dinner at a tapas restaurant up in westchester w/ my parents and my friend and her parents. We got there and i ordered a drink (a mojito made w/ vodka basically, cant remember what it was called) and ordered a fish dish. Well my mother is diabetic so she tried to order the same drink but asked about the sugar content in it. I meanwhile was asking... -
ARCHIVED Dale And Thomas Popcorn
mookie03 replied to angel-jd1's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Love their popcorn! My roommate brought some home for the grammys a few weeks back and then said "Oh no, u probably cant have this!" so she went to the website and i was so psyched to see it actually had gluten-free info! Thanks for contacting them and clearing up that mislabel! (and killernj- right on about Thomas!! ) -
ARCHIVED Birth Control Effectiveness
mookie03 replied to steph1284's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I have discussed this with my doctor b/c i had a problem w/ absorption while on the pill and before gluten-free. Essentially it can cause problems (certainly did for me!) most likely due to the D as someone mentioned. BUT if you are on a gluten-free diet, you should be fine, i would just make sure that if you are using it for BC, use a second form (e.g.... -
ARCHIVED Cross-reactivity?
mookie03 replied to slpinsd's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Michelle- thats exactly what i was going through w/ soy. I have occasional problems with it but not always and it seems to depend how much soy ive had and in what context so it seems like it could only be something like cross-reactivity (otherwise it would always affect me right?!) So i have had the same experience. I do think that it will get better after... -
Yes, i am totally down for Risotteria AND gluten-free chinese-- either of the next two tuesdays would work for me...(not tomorrow but next week or the week after..) Or i'd go another day of the week too...I'm ALWAYS down for Risotteria

ARCHIVED Cross-reactivity?
mookie03 replied to slpinsd's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Berneses, that is my worst nightmare-- peanut butter is my biggest staple!!! (used to be a whole wheat bagel w/ pb, now just the pb!!) Please tell me that wont happen to me! My thoughts on that are that sometimes if you overeat a food, ur body will not get enough balance. PB is great for protein and fat, but u need some variety in your diet so it... -
STOP IT I AM DROOLING!!!!!!!! ARCHIVED Cross-reactivity?
mookie03 replied to slpinsd's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I forgot to mention i also think this would get better with time if you adhere to the diet, such that ur body stops "looking" for the gluten. Which is why, as i understand it, a lot of people have problems w/ intolerances for the few few months/year of being gluten-free. -
ARCHIVED Cross-reactivity?
mookie03 replied to slpinsd's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Cassidy- this is essentially the same thing i was asking, but I guess i am about to try to answer my own question Thanks, Rachel, you are always so helpful! ok im not a doctor nor an expert on this kind of stuff, so im just going to give you my intuitive answer for whats its worth...I think this is a very subjective area in that everyone's body is different... -
ARCHIVED Cross-reactivity?
mookie03 replied to slpinsd's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Hey Rachel, thanks for that info, very interesting!! and im sorry to hear you are still having to work soooo hard to just feel ok Quick question, on the cross-reactivity, other than protein bars/supplements, what else should we watch out for w/ the soy protein? I mean, would soymilk cause this kind of reaction? I am guessing soy ice cream would, as i... -
ARCHIVED gluten-free Restaurants In Washington Dc
mookie03 replied to Brook's topic in Traveling with Celiac Disease
Nicole- your post made me laugh (i know it wasnt meant to be funny...) b/c i have a joke w/ a friend of mine about how much we REALLY dislike DC for just about every reason you can think of...and just about the only GOOD thing about my experience was that i didnt get sick while there For me, however, i was eating in nice restaurants in Bethesda on someone... -

ARCHIVED What Happened?
mookie03 replied to penguin's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Chelsea- I've been there too, i think we all have. for me, i think it was a bad rxn to getting glutened where my body just took a little extra time to get back to normal-- sometimes when i am glutened, its a one shot deal, sometimes its a little worse and my body will react to EVERYTHING for the next week or two. And just like you described. Hang in there... -
ARCHIVED Hard Candy
mookie03 replied to momandgirls's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
BTW, Does anyone know about the ones they sell at Duane Reade? (brand is Skinners i think)- they are the 2 for $3 candies in all varieties- i love the butterscotch ones! But they dont have an email or anything on the package -
I find both to be true Since going gluten-free, my tolerance is MUCH lower, presumably b/c my body is absorbing more of the alcohol and b/c of the healing process. (so i think it sounds like low tolerance too, i feel the same way from drinking these days and i used to be a heavy drinker). BUT, now that i drink wine instead of vodka on the rocks, it is...

ARCHIVED Bare Essentials
mookie03 replied to katshow's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I agree, their stuff is very good for skin allergies-- i break out in hives very easily from makeup and that hasnt happened yet w/ BE. It is also very light, which i love b/c it looks very natural. Chelsea- thanks, i love my babies- they are bro/sis, rescued- now a little over 1 yr old-- the grey guy has a little tiger in him too, got the stripes on... -
I was almost done reading my April issue of Health mag, and got to one of the last pages and see the words GLUTEN FREE-- there was an article on places to go to eat gluten and dairy free "due to the increasing incidence of celiac and lactose intolerance"-- i thought it was great, nice seeing it treated as mainstream like lactose intolerance. Mentioned to...

ARCHIVED Bare Essentials
mookie03 replied to katshow's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I LOVE THIS STUFF!!! I bought the start-up kit and absolutely love it! I used to use neutrogena and clinique and they both were really hard on my skin- BE is not. Also my eyes get very irritated from ALL eye makeup and BE works great!!! WORTH THE $$!!! -
ARCHIVED Good Gfdf Probiotics?
mookie03 replied to terps19's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Thanks, that is reassuring. the best i can describe is that it feels like "productive D", if you get what i mean. it certainly doesnt feeling like a rxn from food. i'm also getting over a sinus infection which could be part of it too... Chelsea- thanks for the info- i used to take acidophilus daily when i was younger b/c i was on antibiotics throughout... -

ARCHIVED Good Gfdf Probiotics?
mookie03 replied to terps19's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Donna- i have a question about this. This was my understanding about using probiotics as well, but i just started taking them last week after a visit to a nutritionist. All of the sudden the last few days i have had a bit of D, but not like i have been glutened, more like my body is trying to flush something out of it (i.e., no pain, cramps, etc. Just D... -
I'm glad you said that b/c i have been wondering about babycakes for a while now-- do you have any idea what their hours are? I have tried to go there twice now and both times they were closed! I'm dying to try it
