  1. has anyone found this product in NY anywhere?
  2. Jillian- i totally know what you mean...it sucks. But i wouldnt chance it. I have been glutened by dried mangos and papayas in the past (usually from those bulk bins, which i know was stupid on my part), but sometimes just buying them in a store. I stay away from them now unless the label is clear, just not worth it to me. And that is why i never go anywhere...
  3. SO i was just invited to a greek restaurant (not a nice one) on thursday with around 10 others and im not sure whether to go. To me, Greek food sounds pretty risky- b/c all i can think of is the pita bread floating around. And communication is also a factor in my decision, as is the # of people i would be dining with. Seems like it would be difficult to...
  4. Went there last night!! I LOOOVE the carrot cake. and the breadsticks are amazing. Yesterday i had the brownie- tasted like a blondie- SOOOO good!!! I'm totally obsessed with Risotteria, and whats even better- i have gotten several of my friends addicted too (none of them are Celiacs) so i get to go even more often!
  5. Its strange, b/c it got much worse as the weather got colder, not warmer as i would have expected (like it is very different than heat rash, which i get sometimes from exercising. I was hoping that once it got warmer outside it would get better, but it hasnt. And Elidel almost seems to make it worse! I will have to try "princess cream" and see how that...
  6. Thanks Patti! I have tried using Elidel but it doesnt seem to help. Does anything in particular make his flare up? I cant seem to find a pattern as to what is causing it, but its terrible. And all of the sudden it is skirt season
  7. OK so i have been gluten free for 10mos now and am feeling great (except for accidental glutenings which do occur but im getting better). My problems before were mainly GI problems and asthma. A few months after i went gluten-free, i developed a terrible rash behind each of my knees. Like literally identical rashes, and at least once a day i have uncontrollable...
  8. Thanks- once again, Moongirl, i appreciate it. Finally someone who understands how important my coffee is to me!!
  9. Thanks moongirl. Not exactly what i wanted to hear, but thanks for checking nonetheless...I would never have thought to verify w/ them, i thought all starbucks (except the obvious) were gluten-free.
  10. Wait a minute...dont mess with my Starbucks! Did he mention anything else that was risky (like the syrups?) or is it just the chocolate syrup? What about the caramel? I so wish Starbux would publish a list...
  11. I dont know if Blooms is open or not, but you should try Peters- it is a diner on the upper east that i heard is excellent. Definitely check out the MOMA, the renovations are great and i think they have some good exhibits right now. It is free on friday afternoons if you will be here on a fri (but beware- long lines those days!) I love the wax museum- i...
  12. i wonder why this is...i only once tried their plain yogurt and it made me sick. then recently i bought their whole fruit sorbet bars and felt off after eating them.. i cant figure out what gives w/ their products, but they dont sit right w/ me! i also find the WF gluten-free list does not list most 365 products...
  13. Good idea! why didnt i think of that - seems more reassuring than than trying to test w/ lactaid...
  14. Yes, Rachel, i really hope that once you have removed casein, you will finally find some peace of mind w/ all these problems...it is like one big guessing game isnt it!! Beverly- thats the same question i have with the lactose v. casein issue...but it seems like getting tested may or may not provide the answers im looking for, as rachel pointed out,...
  15. One more thing... we keep talking about this temporary lactose intolerance while healing...if i am just experiencing that, or perhaps cross-reactivity (getting back on topic!) would the lactaid not work properly? If thats the case, is it premature to assume it is not lactose intolerance, thus that it is permanent casein sensitivity? Sorry for all the questions
  16. Beverly- i think i can handle soy in small amounts, as long as i dont go overboard (and if i do it just makes me gassy and i get slight D, nothing as bad as gluten). But i agree w/ u, sometimes it is worth just going all out with the milk! Question: did you ever get tested for dairy? Are you sure that it is the lactose that bothers you? The reason i'm...
  17. Nicole-- haha, im so sorry, that sounds terrible, but we can all relate to that story! and at least you can look back on it and laugh (and i hope u never went back to wherever it was that you had eaten!)
  18. Beverly, I get gas and slight D from dairy and soy. It is not as pervasive as a gluten rxn, but is definitely not right. but in many ways, it feels like a gluten rxn, which is why i thought to attribute it to cross-reactivity rather than intolerance. I have never had C, seriously not a day in my life, so i dont know about that. All i know is that from...
  19. Rachel, I'm really glad you warned me b/c if i did have a delayed rxn, i would certainly try to convince myself it wasnt the dairy- now at least ive been warned! I totally agree w/ u- the things that really get me are starbux and ice cream once in a while...those are my two indulgences. I saw the thread u started and hope you get positive responses. My guess...
  20. Michelle-- thanks so much for the advice... I actually have been avoiding all cheese for the time being b/c i never really ate too much of it anyway, so i figure i am better off avoiding it in all forms for now (except parmesan which i use sparingly). I do LOVE raw sheep cheese though- i am so psyched to start eating that again! BUT today i finally did it...
  21. Judy- no worries, i didnt give up my 5x/day peanut butter habit and you shouldnt have to either! Michelle- i think the food rotation thing is supposed to work well (i dont know the medical reasons for it but it seems to make sense)...I am getting ready to reintroduce lactose w/ lactaid (my self-test for lactose v. casein) but its hard to do b/c i have...
  22. I just try to listen to my body...i mean if it is treating soy and dairy like gluten, even to a lesser degree, it is probably best to avoid those things a bit. Although in my case, i generally will just avoid it for a week or so when im symptomatic and then eat them again when im feeling better. I know, thats probably not the best thing in the long run...
  23. cant wait to try! i miss mexican but find it so difficult to communicate w/ waiters at most of the restaurants... The restaurant was Pacifico- its in Portchester/Rye-- DONT go there! My parents went there once before this experience and said the food was great but the service was atrocious...and maybe before celiac, i would have dealt w/ bad service for...
  24. Definitely- but i have class 2-4 (we usually get out around 3:30ish) so we'll have to go closer to 4
  25. Free cone day has always been my fav day of the year... but im a little nervous this year- the one near me is the one in Times Square and it is SO crazy on Free cone day- the line goes around the block! Should i be concerned about my "special needs" of getting my Free Cone scoop in a CUP?! I feel like it will be a disaster that day...
