ARCHIVED A Word Of Caution To Preliminary/self Celiac Diagnosis
NoGlutenCooties replied to mmarksbury's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Thank you for taking the time to share your story. I agree that getting to the real cause of any medical problem is very important. Congratulations on finding out the true cause of yours... and while you're eating a donut for Laura, eat an Oreo and a well-buttered dinner roll for me too, won't you?- 6 replies

ARCHIVED Need Moral Support For Travel
NoGlutenCooties replied to C-Girl's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I understand your fear and hesitation. I'm planning a road trip for this spring and I'm terrified as well. I'll be staying in 5 different cities and I've been researching like crazy... possible restaurants, grocery stores, etc. It's a pain in the arse. When I first started all of the planning I almost didn't even want to go. But I know if I let this... -
ARCHIVED Problems With Teeth
NoGlutenCooties replied to twe0708's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
I was asymptomatic before my diagnosis so didn't have any serious issues to monitor and watch go away. That said, I do find I feel stronger and have more energy. I wake up faster in the morning too - I used to need a good 2 hours to feel human. Now I'm fully awake within minutes. I'm not as irritable either - I had started taking a Vit B Complex which... -
ARCHIVED Not Sure What I Have
NoGlutenCooties replied to glux's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Yes, they recommend a 2-week gluten challenge before the biopsy - it takes longer for the antibodies to build up enough to test positive in the blood. However, keep in mind that the inflammation in the small intestine is spotty and it can be easily missed when they do the biopsy. Especially if the doctor isn't that knowledgeable and only takes 1 or 2 of... -
ARCHIVED Introduction As We Are Newly gluten-free
NoGlutenCooties replied to Jeepfreak81's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Just wanted to mention that if she goes 100% gluten-free for a few months and gets symptom relief and then tries to eat something with gluten in it she is likely to have a fairly obvious and strong reaction. I got glutened by accident after being gluten-free for 3 months and it was just like getting food poisoning. At that point, it would be completely... -
ARCHIVED Problems With Teeth
NoGlutenCooties replied to twe0708's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
I had uterine polyps removed a few years ago via a D&C. The OBGYN who did the procedure said she lost count as to how many there were in there, described the procedure as "picking them like weeds", said "most" women who never go through child birth end up having to have a D&C at some point in their lives, and explained that uterine polyps are NOT... -
IMO, you should have it checked out. Possible causes for pain in that area are kidney infection, kidney stones, or ovarian cysts: http://voices.yahoo.com/causes-severe-pain-lower-left-side-the-6694210.html Sources for this article: The National Institutes of Health on Abdominal Pain and The Mayo Clinic on Causes of Abdominal Pain

ARCHIVED Probiotics And Irritability/pmt
NoGlutenCooties replied to CR5442's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I never put probiotics and reduced PMS symptoms together... but I definitely feel better all around when taking probiotics and digestive enzymes. Having balanced gut flora is essential for overall health so I wouldn't be at all surprised if it helps get your hormone levels evened out - which can ease PMS. -
ARCHIVED Hello!
NoGlutenCooties replied to CommaHolly's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Just wanted to add that you might want to consider a bone density test. Osteopenia and early osteoporosis are common in Celiacs due to the poor absorption of nutrients. -
ARCHIVED Not Sure What I Have
NoGlutenCooties replied to glux's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Hi Glux and Welcome to the Forum! I love GFinDC's sore throat analogy... it's right on the money! If you aren't going to go back to eating gluten so that you can get tested I suggest going with simple, whole foods for awhile to clear out your system. Things like plain chicken, yams, green beans - mild food that isn't likely to cause reactions. If this... -
ARCHIVED Introduction As We Are Newly gluten-free
NoGlutenCooties replied to Jeepfreak81's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Welcome JeepFreak! Just want to say that I admire and respect you for being so supportive of your wife - especially now as she fights through the withdrawal and the difficulties of changing a lifestyle! I have always cooked for myself and stick to quick, simple meals and it is actually easy to do gluten-free. Simple meat, veggies, and a starch (I prefer... -
Welcome JustGF! I was diagnosed on Oct 1, 2013 so haven't been at this for long. I go back for the follow-up blood work towards the end of March. You're very fortunate to have caught this thing before getting severe symptoms. I didn't have any symptoms and yet the biopsy showed moderate to severe villi damage - so the myth about "no symptoms, no problem...

ARCHIVED Newbie Here, Pursuing A Diagnosis
NoGlutenCooties replied to SugarSpike's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
In case you are unaware, if you have hypoglycemia it is not just about the obvious sugar intake. It is also about eating foods that turn to sugar quickly in your body. I know if I eat cereal first thing in the morning on an empty stomach I feel like crap and get all shaky. If I put fruit on it too I'd want to die (or least immediately go back to bed).... -
ARCHIVED Hello!
NoGlutenCooties replied to CommaHolly's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Welcome to the forum, Holly - I know what you mean about not really wanting to be "one of us", but being gluten-free isn't bad at all and as others have mentioned it can make you feel so much better that the trade-off is more than worth it. Either way, please stop back and let us know how the tests went. If it is Celiac, my suggestion is to focus on... -
ARCHIVED Just Diagnosed...need Advice/moral Support
NoGlutenCooties replied to icelandgirl's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Just a comment on the "cooking for one" issue. I've been cooking for one for several years now and I know exactly what you mean. One of my favorite go-to dishes when I really don't feel like cooking is stir-fry. I use frozen veggies and pre-cooked sausage (Aidell's is awesome). I just saute the veggies in a little olive oil, cut up the sausage and throw... -
ARCHIVED Am I Likely To Be Dx-Ed? Please Help!
NoGlutenCooties replied to Justscared's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I'm sure lab costs vary - and I live in New Jersey where everything is way more expensive than it should be - but my Celiac panel of blood tests were billed at over $900 (I forget now how much the insurance company paid). So you'd definitely want to check on the price ahead of time. -
ARCHIVED Diagnosis Received
NoGlutenCooties replied to SimonSez0721's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Hi SimonSez - You are not a step-child around here! There are many folks here who have NCGI, not just Celiac. The treatment is the same for both - 100% gluten-free diet. No cheating. You will likely find that your IBS symptoms go away once you go gluten-free. I think it's a good idea to check in with the surgeon just to see what they have to say...- 15 replies

ARCHIVED Has Your Reaction To Gluten Changed?
NoGlutenCooties replied to GFAnnie's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Before my diagnosis I was asymptomatic - no intestinal issues, no nothing. I've been gluten-free since the beginning of Oct. and 3 months into it I accidentally glutened myself with a tiny, tiny taste of tabuli - that had bulgar wheat in it (we got it mixed up with the quinoa salad) - anyhow... I had a definite, recognizable reaction. Bloating 3 hours after... -
ARCHIVED Just Diagnosed...need Advice/moral Support
NoGlutenCooties replied to icelandgirl's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I drink a protein shake everyday for breakfast. It's quick, easy and provides a hit of protein that boosts your metabolism and sticks with you. I use Designer Whey - French Vanilla flavor (The Vitamin Shoppe and some Target stores carry it). 18g of protein and only 2g of sugars. Beware some of the other flavors though, because they are lower in protein... -
ARCHIVED How Is A Biopsy Done
NoGlutenCooties replied to marip's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Hi Marip and Welcome to the Forum! The link kareng provided explains the procedure very well. Just wanted to add that it is a relatively simple and quick procedure. Some people experience some discomfort afterwards when they eat - its best to stick to mild, easily digested food for a few days following the procedure - and take it easy on fiberous food... -
ARCHIVED How To Help Family Cope!
NoGlutenCooties replied to sheilaamistone's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I'm also a female, but this might help.... It doesn't sound like he doesn't believe that it hurts, he just doesn't have anything similar to compare it to. Has he ever had a bad charlie-horse? It's like that, only rather than being in an extremity it is eminating from the center of your body. And there is no way to stretch it and relieve the pain. And... -

Hi Icelandgirl and Welcome to the Forum! You are most definitely NOT alone! And the rest of us understand - poke around the forum and ask whatever questions you have, vent, let us know how you're doing - we're here to help and WE CARE! I agree with Bartfull - whole foods, especially at first, are best. They're healthy and don't require label analysis... -
Hi Currantbun and Welcome to the Forum! Lets see... you felt like crap... went gluten-free and DF and felt much better... started eating gluten and dairy again... and again feel like crap. To me, the answer is simple. Stay gluten-free. Also go DF for awhile and then reintroduce dairy to see if just adding that back in bothers you. If it does, stay...
