  1. once you are able to, don't forget to get plenty of exercise - daily. it is excellent at helping the immune system fight off bugs.
  2. in short: yes, distilled alcohols that haven't had anything added back after the distillation process are gluten free. some people prefer to not use grain based alcohols anyway. in long: well, we've had that discussion a number of times, and while I encourage you to search on it and read the threads on the board about it, I think I'll leave the long...
  3. do a search! a couple of us have been there recently, and I just can't remember what all I wrote about where I ate and shopped back in november.

    ARCHIVED Idiot!

the outside food restriction isn't bogus, though, iirc, it's more of a health code issue. many restaurants don't bother to observe it, but it's not fake.
  5. BTW, testing for asthma needn't involve any traditional allergy testing. (Some people's asthma triggers - including my own - aren't allergic in nature. Mine are chemical irritants like propellants, smoke, and chemical fumes.)
  6. my husband and I have very different experiences at the dentist. I generally don't have much plaque build-up, rarely have cavities, and don't have too much gum trouble, despite not being all that diligent about flossing. my husband, however, regularly has significant plaque build up, at least one cavity, and lots of cleaning to be done, despite...
  7. you have to check the ingredients on each soup. (and what is "main brand" may vary depending on your geographic location and store chains. ) muir glen has a number of gluten free soups, and progresso has a few. pacific and imagine have boxed soups that are gluten free as well. most of the ones that are gluten free are a bit more expensive. (others will...
  8. actually, there are some theories that suggest, chemically, what is going on with fibromyalgia that make it nothing like IBS in the "wastebasket syndrome" category. CSS (central sensitivity syndrome) diagnoses share some commonalities when it comes to brain chemistry, particularly in the reduced functionality in the parasympathetic nervous system. at least...
  9. That's definitely a sensible thing to do. Time to develop a taste for dark chocolate! (no casein in *most* dark chocolates)
  10. lizard's comment about long acting inhalers reminded me, if you do reconsider going to a doc about asthma, I would *STRONGLY* encourage you to get a recommendation to a good allergist/immunologist - someone who *specializes* in asthma. they're going to be able to better diagnose you (and yes, other things can manifest as asthma that aren't), better treat...
  11. How to help your husband? Well, I'm guessing that he's just very unaware in the food realm. I don't mean that in a bad way at all - it's very easy, particularly in our society, to be unaware of what food really is made of, where it comes from, and how it fuels us. We take food for granted, and often as nothing more than either something to sate us, something...
  12. Because it does. Open Original Shared Link (Other references: Open Original Shared Link, Open Original Shared Link, Open Original Shared Link) Of course it doesn't *have* to be derived from corn, but it *can* be derived from corn.
  13. I think a lot of lunch meat uses citric acid... Citric acid is usually corn derived in the US, no?
  14. the anaheim/orange-county area has lots of gluten free restaurants, and gluten-free-friendly grocery stores (but don't stick to just the mainstream ones - mothers and wild oats have good options). disney has lots of options for you (they'll have gluten-free rolls in most of their restaurants ). a hotel room with a kitchenette can help so that you don't...
  15. chicken soup!
  16. Ditto what ravenwood said - do not crush them unless you've called and determined that the formulation you are taking can be crushed. You may find that you released the dosage far too quickly into the bloodstream (and while vitamins are not toxic at normal dosages, they can be at very inappropriate dosages). Vitamins designed as powders or liquids already...
  17. if you want to replace that oatmeal, consider getting some quinoa flakes, adding a little bit of flax meal (to round out the taste and add a bit of good fat and some more fiber/protein), sweeten with agave or honey, and spice with some cinnamon or apple pie spice (my current favorite). You can mix everything but the sweetener (and even that, if you use brown...
  18. Many are - but always check the ingredient label, as sometimes they'll "specialize" and add wheat grass or something like that. You can also get rice protein powder, hemp powder, whey powder (if you're not dairy sensitive), and pea protein, to name a few.
  19. if it truly is asthma, you *need* to have fast acting bronchodilators on hand, and may or may not need a short course of inhaled or systemic steroids. if it really is asthma, you do *NOT* (repeat *NOT* want to under or not treat it. it can be finicky, and suddenly become much worse - as in "you got to the hospital now, if you want to keep breathing", even...
  20. I hope some people made it out there today! I only stayed long enough to sign in and put in my original vote (I had a previous appointment), but it was still rewarding to be a part of the process.
  21. Please get out and caucus (or if it counts, vote in the primary) today! In some states, like Washington, for some parties, like the Democrats, the primary doesn't count at all - all pledged delegates are allocated via the caucuses. For the Republicans, half are allocated from the primary, half from the caucuses. You don't have to have yet registered...
  22. Congrats on going gluten free! The change in diet can be physically challenging, and emotionally and psychologically very challenging as well It's tough. It's true that it could be worse, but yeah, it could be better. Someone else having cancer doesn't make your broken leg hurt any less, though. For some reason, we all have to compare and...
  23. you can't make assumptions for any category. hard candies are all different, and made by different companies - same for gummies. always check with companies and read ingredient lists. most are fine, but some can contain wheat. (licorice, for instance, pretty much always does. hard mints often don't.)
  24. I'm not sure we should be voting multiple times... Seems a tad skewed...
  25. the only finding that's every been made about a gluten free diet being nutritionally questionable is in the area of folic acid, as wheat flour and wheat-based bread products have folic acid added to them as an 'extra'. the idea that not getting additives to give you enough folic acid, however, assumes that you're eating a fairly crappy diet to begin with...
