    ARCHIVED Doctor Won't Test Son

2 things. 1) you can have the allergist order the tests 2) the doctor works for you; you pay him. you can order the tests are taken, or go elsewhere. it is totally possible that he'll say they aren't medically necessary and you'll have to pay the costs (because he won't justify it to insurance), but it is an option. oh, a third option: print out...
  2. It may require a long drive, but he needs to be seen. I second the PT/chiro approach to find out if it's muscular or structural, after an ortho rules out the obvious. Knees are important to keep in decent shape, and are one of the weaker points in the body.
  3. very self-centered, and immature, friend. "wah! if I can't have my way, you're bad." uh... yeah.
  4. Oberto (all but the one flavor that does have gluten) and Whole Foods are the kinds I go with when I don't make my own.
  5. They could just take lactaid (the pill variety) just before eating the yogurt. You could probably use lactaid milk (which is just milk with the enzyme that's in the pill already added) to make it, but I haven't tried. (I'm casein intolerant.)
  6. Butter - I don't use it. A little bit of canola or olive oil in cooking, but you don't need much for almost anything. If you're baking, the subs are a little more complicated, but you didn't say what the purpose of the ingredient was... Cheese - there's lots of lowfat cheeses available at the store. (I'm dairy free, so I don't know which ones are good...
  7. RDA's are far from gospel (many times they were picked out of thin air - such as the one for sodium). Magnesium should be in a 1:2 ratio with calcium - so if you're supplementing 1000mg of calcium a day, you take 500mg of magnesium along with it. More useful is knowing the toxic levels of vitamins, and the RDA is not that - it's merely the minimum amount...
  8. Please, please, please stop including millet in this list. It's gluten free! Go ahead, make MFS out of it! Postings like this allow misinformation to continue to spread.
  9. If you are 100% certain that you've eliminated 100% of gluten (wheat, barley, rye, and oats) from your diet, including all the hidden sources (like soy sauce, some broths, lotion, playdoh, etc.) and have gotten rid of any chance of contamination in your home, then I would ask what difference the diet has made. *Any* changes are pieces of data to use. See...
  10. It's not a new board format - a setting got changed on you. (I'm not quite sure how it happens. I've seen a handful of people post on it, but haven't had it happen myself.) One of the mods will have to explain how to undo it - I can't find it!
  11. Nice effect!
  12. Well, what does "popping out" mean? There's a lot of things that can happen in that joint. Did you take him to an orthopaedist that specializes in knees? If not, given that this is now a recurring problem, I suggest doing so.
  13. I should add that I'm sure my chiropractor would say that you should make sure that you're checked for proper structure as well. Strong muscles can only help so much if your architecture (and posture) isn't set properly.
  14. I take Rainbow Light, the women's one-a-day multi. Same with their 'food based' calcium. It's one of the only calciums that has the 2:1 cal:mag ratio. Even the CitriCal (which has the more absorbable calcium citrate form of calcium) with magnesium doesn't have *enough* magnesium.
  15. I know it can be hard to remember to take calcium, but you remember to brush your teeth, right? To get dressed, right? To eat sometime, right? Then link taking the calcium to two of these items. (Don't take more than ~500mg at a time. 300mg at a time is preferrable.) You've formed other habits in your life; you can form this one too!
  16. lol... I enjoyed the third one as well, but I do hope they do NOT make a fourth. Some things should not go on indefinitely.
  17. If it had a solid crust (not french-apple type crust), I'd say it's fine. Without that, nope - into the trash it goes, 'cause it's a perfect breeding ground for all kinds of stuff. (The reason I mention the solid crust is that the whole reason for pot pies to have been invented is to keep leftovers good overnight before refrigeration!)
  18. All of my PTs have also noted that I have hypermobile joints. I would encourage you *not* to "just lift weights" but to work with a PT or someone else who's trained in dealing with this sort of thing. There are particular muscle groups you need to have strong enough to not hurt yourself - and balance in the muscle groups will be more important than strength...
  19. I've had a break, but it was from a rollerblading accident and healed well. :/ I do take supplemental calcium/magnesium (with D). Magnesium is equally, if not more, important for celiacs when it comes to bone density.
  20. oats have two entirely separate issues: 1) oats are uniquely subject to cross contamination. they are often grown in rotation with wheat, or nearby to wheat and then milled, stored, and transported in shared or co-located facilities. contamination from the seed-up, really. (really really - you'll get wheat seeds in oat seeds in cases like this and can...
  21. What you read as a nonchalant attitude may be someone carefully picking their battles. You can fight every last thing in life - and leave yourself drained and frustrated wondering why life is always a challenging battle. Or you can make informed decisions on your battles - such as knowing what companies will identify the source of their MFS, knowing what...
  22. Guys, come on. It's been explained before, and I'll explain it again. And no amount of wishful thinking will make it go away. In a packaged product, there will *never* be anything but a lower limit for a definition of the term gluten free; that term will never truely mean zero. Why? Because to enforce the rule, you have to be able to measure compliance...
  23. Does it come in a box or a bag? Then chances are that it's not worthwhile. Whole, natural foods are the way to go. I'm not saying you have to spend all day cooking - stir-fries, soups, salads, and a lot of basic stuff doesn't take a lot of time or effort.
  24. I'd like to note that it's 33% of those that aren't on a gluten free diet. Wheat and barley are out, but casein, corn, soybean, and millet are all gluten free. I too would like to see the source that says that the Food Allergen Labeling Law does not need to be followed.
