  1. I'm a software/systems engineer. Mostly, I don't do any coding anymore, however, and just lead, which is fine, because I like that sort of thing, and quite frankly, think we need more people who want to (and can) lead those who don't want to (or can't) (but can't code like the devil). In my spare time, though, I like lots of outdoors thing (hiking,...
  2. You'll see lots of something-F's around here. The common ones: G F - gluten free C F - casein free (casein is the protein in milk, and is different than lactose, the sugar in milk) E F - egg free S F - soy free and while I haven't seen abbreviations being very common for them, there's also nut free, legume free, rice free, and a whole host of other...
  3. every time my PT's give me strengthening exercises, it's with fewer reps - no more than 12. you might try varying the types of crunches you're doing (regular ones with your feet on the floor aren't the most effective - feet up in the air and crunches to the side help round out the core muscles you're using), but it's also probably worth seeing if you can...
  4. I'm not sure where their place is in Seattle - but Google will tell you!
  5. You can try polyurethane condoms - they're compatible with more types of lubricants than latex ones, too. My husband and I found that we didn't like them, and it turned out that it wasn't latex that was the problem (there are lots of other sources of latex that don't irritate me) but the N-9 that is/was on a lot of latex condoms as a spermicidal. Once we...
  6. I'd get a bag of Bob's Red Mill amaranth flour and use the recipe on there - as I recall, it's entirely amaranth flour.
  7. Another common irritant - besides the spermicide nonoxyl-9 - is propylene glycol, when used topically, and it's in most lubricants, something most of us use (or should use). I can deal with it in small quantities, but have to be careful of it. (I should have noted that I too had to go off the pill to get improvement, and take testosterone, as my levels...
  8. I ate at this place once, years ago, before going Gluten-free Casein-free and loved it. (Huge portions, and the food can be rich/heavy, but is very tasty, and you take home leftovers to have food for three days!) We went last night with a large group, and I expected that I wouldn't be able to have anything, but the manager was serving us, and when he...
  9. ask for it specifically - not in a round-about fashion. say - "what we're trying now isn't working, and I'd like to rule out the options. can you do a complete celiac blood panel: total IgA, anti-gliadin IgA, IgG, EMA and tTg please so that we can rule out celiac disease, which we haven't done yet?" (knowing, of course, that a negative blood test isn't...
  10. I was diagnosed with vulvar vestibulitis about seven years ago (about a year before my wedding). It is what led me to finding out I was gluten intolerant, actually, as someone on a VVS forum swore up and down that the latter causes the former. I didn't believe her, tried the diet, and while I didn't see my VVS symptoms change much, I noticed a change in...
  11. The tap water is because of concern over fluoride affecting the thyroid issues she already has. Butter is derived from milk, and has casein, and hence is off the list if you are casein intolerant. The majority of chocolate (even many dark chocolates) have a milk product (be it whey, milk powder, milk fat, or something else) in them, and hence are out...
  12. Avocados and nuts! The latter are particularly easy to carry around all the time. Keep the calorie density up!
  13. I make flax crackers. Lots o' fiber, protein, and good fat in those!
  14. I find dairy free harder than gluten free. There is no good cheese substitute, even with soy, and no good yogurt substitute w/o soy. There are lots of milk alternatives: various rice milks (Rice Dream is far from the only one out there), almond milk (also a number of brands), potato based milk, and hemp milk, to name a few. There are even butters you...
  15. Ditto this! You DO have someone to stand up for yourself - YOURSELF! Only you can allow them to treat you like that. Yeah, I know - easier said than done, but you can still do it. It took me years (and psych help) to learn to do it relatively well, but it's for the best. As for the gluten challenge - stop p%$#@#-footing about it. Give her wheat or...
  16. You've got the right approach - take a hundred shots in the hopes of getting that one. (Thank goodness digital makes that so much cheaper these days!) I'm no pro, but I've done a few weddings as back-up and learned from a few of the pros there and in classes over the past 18 years (yes, since I was 10). You've got great potential, and your images are...
  17. I didn't complain when I paid >$6/gal in Europe; I'm not going to complain paying a bit more than half that. Maybe it'll encourage people to stop thinking of gas (and the resulting pollutants from it) as a nearly free resource.
  18. especially with wonky blood sugar, I'd try uping the fat/protein in your diet. while I'm not usually a fan of the 60% fat approach, it does work for some people, and there is sound reason behind it. if I haven't been pretty darn stable in my blood sugar, I can't get away with less than 30% protein/30% fat in my diet. I know it's hard to do on a vegetarian...
  19. MLO's (and others) rice based protein powder, Peaceful Planet's Supreme Meal (amaranth/quinoa/millet), or AncientHarvest (and others) hemp protein powder. A number of different places have them - some health food stores, Whole Foods/Wild Oats, and depending on where you are, regular stores.
  20. you don't need gums for muffins. I never use it in my recipes - keep looking around at different recipes. some people like it, some don't care.
  21. Them eating food themselves that they like doesn't mean they don't get it. Trying to make you eat food you can't have would be them not getting it. But it doesn't make sense for absolutely everyone to eat the smallest set of what everyone can have. That'd be like me not eating chocolate because my husband hates it and the smell of it.
  22. There's a Veggie Gourmet that I've found at Whole Foods, PCC, and Wild Oats that I haven't gotten around to trying yet that's suppose to melt well. (It has soy, btw.) But there really isn't much at all. Cheese is an issue.
  23. I can understand their concern about IP theft. (intellectual property) But they've not tried to work with the customer to find a middle ground. (My understanding is that, to a restaurant, asking for the ingredients *is* tantamount to asking for a recipe, which is their intellectual property. They have a right to not share it - as much as we have a right...
  24. Given that you did specific PT for your back, I would recommend calling the PT place up, and asking if they can send you another copy of the exercises. They'll have a copy in your file, and there shouldn't be a problem sending you one. (There might be a small fee for photocopies, but that'd be about it.)
  25. while you can search pubmed for the stats (I don't remember them), this board does *not* represent the average celiac in gender demographics, geographic demographics, and especially compliance demographics. we are not a 'representative sample'. we're great anyway.
