ARCHIVED How You Choose Your Login Name
tarnalberry replied to little d's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
we had a conversation about this at work, and how it may be becoming advantageous to be able to successfully google yourself (only finding relatively positive things, of course), particularly when trying to change jobs. anonymity may now be a less that desired thing. google me, and you get hits to a sterling silver spoon and a gymnast, mostly. my... -
ARCHIVED Best Time Of Day To Go Running?
tarnalberry replied to Kassie's topic in Sports and Fitness
whatever time of day works best for you. there isn't one right answer - some people like morning, some like the afternoon, some like evening. too close to bedtime does make it hard to get to sleep, and too much in the middle of the day when it's hot can be risky, but other than that, it's whenever *you* like to go. -
ARCHIVED Need Biochemist/ Molecular Biologist Info
tarnalberry replied to RKB-MD's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
As Jenny noted, it's not the alcohols derived from wheat have had the proteins denatured to the point where they no longer cause reactions, it's that they are distilled, which does not allow proteins - with their large molecular weight - into the final process. Deep fryers don't get hot enough to denature a protein as stable as gluten, which owes some of... -
ARCHIVED Officially Casien Intolerant
tarnalberry replied to SunnyDyRain's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
yep, that first one is true. as for the link, you can always get to it through the search, but here it isOpen Original Shared Link -
neti pot (aka sinus rinse, or nasal lavage) can be very useful. getting plenty of exercise and sleep are also good preventatives, along with good nutrition. I know it sounds vague, general, and not direct, but it really is as basic as "get moderate intensity exercise every day" and "get at least 7 hours of sleep" (or thereabouts) every night to keep the...

You inspired me to bring my camera on a walk to the store (to get shampoo!) and take pictures. Turned my 15 minute walk into a ~70 minute walk. (For reference, this is 36 out of the 140 pictures I took. Some whole subject groups didn't come out at all - especially the bees. And a nearly great one of a yellow jacket.) mine is a concatenation of my names, in much the same way that a unix admin would assign a login. -
ARCHIVED Whole Foods Bakery
tarnalberry replied to JennyC's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Pretty much dislike all of it - not for taste, but because it all has milk, aside from the molasses cookies, which are so high in sugar that I can eat about half of one a day. *sigh* Good luck. I hear that there are a number of tasty items, but they're out for a number of people. -
I think about all the foods - the wide variety of natural foods - that I eat that all the other 'normal' people I know haven't even heard about, and kinda think maybe I'm the lucky one. Besides that, I bring in muffins and cobbler and other fun things on occasion (I'm gluten-free, CF, and soy-light), and everyone *loves* them. Not exactly deprived...

ARCHIVED Newly Diagnosed - How To Work With My Family?
tarnalberry replied to lob6796's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
you don't necessarily need to get rid of all your pots and pans. stainless steel can be cleaned perfectly sufficiently. non-stick cookware only needs to be replaced if it is scratched (which well maintained non-stick cookware should never be). collanders and toasters need to be replaced, as well as wooden spoons, because they do not clean well (porous... -
ARCHIVED I Have A Question, How Long Before I Feel Better?
tarnalberry replied to a topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
nutritional deficiencies also aren't resolved in three weeks. not to mention the stress that can be placed on you in making the transition and trying to keep up with what you've been doing. (just the stress from trying to do 3 jobs alone will - eventually - wear you out. and I say that as someone who also thrives on hectic-ness and variety.) -
unless I'm putting photos on my own website (on my brother-in-law's machine until I opt to pay for a static IP address), I just use flickr. I use flickr for three reasons: 1. it's easy to reference people too 2. the feature set I want is cheap 3. uploading is really trivial I use it for sharing with family and friends, so consistency is key. Multiple...

ARCHIVED Dairy Intolerance And Probiotics
tarnalberry replied to JamiD's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
as mentioned, you want to chech the culture medium. lactobacillus is just the species name of a type of bacterium that can consume lactose. many of them are fine, but you do need to check. -

avocado - on it's on, in tuna, with other stuff. coconut milk in rice pudding, in smoothies, in soup. -
ARCHIVED Enterolab
tarnalberry replied to confusedks's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
If it makes you feel any better, research is being done in Italy to use stool testing as an improved way to identify immune markers that indicate celiac disease, much like what he's doing. Research takes *a long time* to get into the mainstream - sometimes decades - so it doesn't really surprise me that not much has happened yet. -
Thank you. Most of these are shot with a point and shoot Canon SD400. It's alright, but mostly it's small enough for hiking. The rest are shot with a Nikon D70 DSLR. Both are 5mp cameras. (It's not the size of the sensor; it's how you use it. ) Really, it's a matter of practice and instruction on the subject. And lots and lots of practice. ...

ARCHIVED Im Sick Of Eating Out!
tarnalberry replied to holdthegluten's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I eat ahead of time and have water. It's up to you to say no, no matter what anyone else says. I know it can be rough, but unless you have found places that you are confident with (and I encourage you to try), and can eat there, it's all you can do. You should *not* ostracize yourself from social situations just because other people are eating, though... -
ARCHIVED Vinegar
tarnalberry replied to a topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
distillation removes the very large gluten protein from the distillate that is left over for vinegar (or alcohol, for that matter). it's fine. besides that, vinegar, when on an ingredient label in a food by itself, must - by law - refer to apple cider vinegar, which isn't made from grains. "grain vinegar" can come from wheat - or corn or a number of other... -
ARCHIVED )(()()(((())))(( Microwaves
tarnalberry replied to scotty's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
no, it won't contaminate something in it's own container (or just on it's own paper towel). pop the lid on any container you put in the microwave before you heat it (or, in the case of foods like potatoes, poke holes in them first - and just don't microwave whole eggs in the shell! ). -

I know. And I only say it as constructive criticism, since I know that you're very good and can get even better. Composition is always a challenge, and cropping can take ages - at least it's faster on the computer than in the darkroom. (I can't tell you how many hours I spent in the darkroom trying to crop images to the proper composition.) I know the...

nobody said to waste money on a gym - we said to take the time/money to talk to a *human being* about how to do what is best for your body. you're full fledged gym won't properly guide you through the best way to safely exercise your body. (for instance, 30 reps is not the best way.) it can provide you with the mechanics, but it's the education and knowledge...

I'd say I like the macros, and unique angles the most. The wildlife ones are... too close to ordinary. But those are *tough* to get anything else. I'd encourage you to toy with not centering your subjects. It struck me that the pictures all were similar in some way, and one of those ways is that the subject is all center in the frame, or very nearly...
