ARCHIVED Crackers, Anyone?
tarnalberry replied to mama2two's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I think two or three of my recipes are on the "as promised, a few recipes" post. mostly, I end up making flax crackers, but sun-dried tomato ones too. -
ARCHIVED Crackers, Anyone?
tarnalberry replied to mama2two's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
There are some rice crackers (the round ones in the long boxes - check labels) that are good. But I like making my own in a dehydrator. Then I can make all kinds of flavors. -
ARCHIVED Foot Fracture Still Not Completly Heeled
tarnalberry replied to little d's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
I presume you have been taking cal/mag/D supplements while your broken bone has been healing? If not, your doctor should have told you to do so... -
ARCHIVED Seattle celiac disease Awareness Walk And Gluten Free Food Fair
tarnalberry replied to burdee's topic in Publications & Publicity
woot! -
If you can't cook your own food, then you need to call your doctor and have him/her talk to your mom. You can NOT eat small amounts of gluten - you'll continue to damage your intestines and not heal. If you can cook your own food, then you don't need to make her understand at all, you just need to stick to your guns and say no (and then cook your own...

ARCHIVED Cheese Substitute
tarnalberry replied to snapple's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
for a sandwhich, I've found no substitute for cheese without casein. for some other things, there are various things (avocado for lasagna, cashew based raw ranch dressing sub, etc.) -
ARCHIVED Staggering Statistic-why?seems Simple To Me
tarnalberry replied to dally099's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I wouldn't say gene testing - since nearly a third of people may carry the gene, and it doesn't tell you if you have celiac disease. But screening with the basic five celiac blood tests would be good. -
They get cake and pizza and stuff at work all the time, but I can't have it. It's no big deal, really. Here's my perspective: The inconvenience of dealing with one random person, at the expense of the time of trying to find something else and making other people less satisfied, isn't worth it, in the big picture. I'll sometimes bring in muffins or...

Given the IgG responses, I'd say that you are at least gluten intolerant - for life. They didn't run a tTg, so it's hard to guess at damage - and hence a celiac diagnosis.

ARCHIVED Employer Doesn't Get It
tarnalberry replied to DesertRatCeliac's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Two other things that come to mind: 1. Blood sugar issues from not getting enough fat and protein. (You can do this on the road, with some careful planning.) 2. Other nutritional deficiencies from a not-well-balanced diet. -
ARCHIVED Lactose Free Milk?
tarnalberry replied to holdthegluten's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Lactaid milk is a little sweeter, and doesn't have the legume taste of soy milk. YMMV, of course. (Your mileage may vary.) But, lactaid is just a brand name for lactose free milk, which means that the lactase enzyme has been added to the milk to break down the lactose sugar (the component simple sugars - glucose and galactose). It still has casein... -
It may take some time to treat the problem - steroids are *serious* drugs. While I never entirely understood how modifying your diet could be so difficult, just reading through the forum tells me you're not alone in that feeling by a long shot. Not everyone reacts the same way, and remember two things when your 'friends' tell you it's not a big deal...

ARCHIVED Rice Cooker
tarnalberry replied to jkmunchkin's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
we have the fancy, fuzzy-logic Zojurushi rice cooker, and love it - it cooks rice perfectly without wasting a grain or any issues no matter what the kind. -
ARCHIVED Is It A Bad Thing...
tarnalberry replied to loco-ladi's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Tinkyada - it tastes just like the real thing. -
ARCHIVED Warning About Generic Version Of Anti-depressant
tarnalberry replied to Flor's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
I think it was primarily the drug list - something that is *easily* incorrect. (It's just not something to publish in something as static as a book... pet peeve...) I called as long ago as four years, when I first went gluten-free, and it was gluten-free that long ago, and I've called twice since then. As I recall, this is the book that says it's ok... -
ARCHIVED Gluten Free Terriaki Sauce
tarnalberry replied to ginap73's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I make my own - gluten-free tamari, sugar, mirin (rice wine), pineapple juice, simmered until it's the right consistency (but not burnt!). -
ARCHIVED Warning About Generic Version Of Anti-depressant
tarnalberry replied to Flor's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Actually, many of us have called on the Z-pak. It is gluten free. This, along with other information in her book, is incorrect. Zithomycin can cause stomach upset all on its own. -
ARCHIVED Raspberry Sauce?
tarnalberry replied to TinkerbellSwt's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
You can always take some raspberries (frozen should be fine) with a touch of water (to keep them from burning before they burst), simmer them in a pot with sugar (to taste) until they have reduced to the consistency you want. Then strain (and push) through a cheese cloth or fine meshed strainer. -
ARCHIVED Warning About Generic Version Of Anti-depressant
tarnalberry replied to Flor's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
the main (active) ingredient in generics is the same as the brand name item. but it's soooo true that they are not 'identical' to the brand name, or there wouldn't be any call for many of them. some doctors will recognize this - the slight variances in fillers and binders can affect how it is absorbed and affects the system. (actually, it seems this phenomena... -
avocado - with tuna or in salsa or on a salad hemp - in powder (in smoothies), seed (on salads, in baked goods), butter (on rice cakes or apple), or tortilla coconut milk (there are ones in lined cans that are pretty good) - in smoothies, curries, soups, etc. nut/seed butters (other than almond)

ARCHIVED Forgive Me For I've Been Bad
tarnalberry replied to JerryK's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
You start to feel normal *because* you are avoiding gluten. As long as you want to not feel below normal, you keep eating gluten free and doing exactly that - don't slip. Maybe it's easier after a couple years... -
ARCHIVED Should I Not Eat These?
tarnalberry replied to whattodo's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
those items are gluten free, and you can have them on the gluten-free diet. some people find that they have other intolerances (many of of, for instance, find that we are intolerant of dairy as well), and that is why you'll see those, for the most part. (soy... soy is an issue that I won't get into. some people think that it's awful for everyone. some... -
One thing I don't like about public health care (of all the varieties I know about) is that you can't pick your own doctor at any time and self refer. I'm a scientist, and I have enough of a medical background that I'm relatively well educated when it comes to my health. When I was having knee problems, I knew my GP - great though she was - wasn't the...

ARCHIVED Can I Trust Food Lables
tarnalberry replied to whattodo's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
There are a handful of farmers in the US and Canada that produce truely gluten-free oats, and you'll likely have to order them online and they aren't cheap. But they are not grown in fields rotated with wheat, or processed/packaged in shared facilities. Keep in mind, however, that about 10% of celiacs react to the protein in oats as well, as it is similar... -
ARCHIVED Migraines And Celiac
tarnalberry replied to ADevoto's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Regardless of the blood tests, if you have the symptoms, do the test of the gluten free diet. You may find it helps. It might be celiac at a subclinical level that isn't getting picked up on your tests, or it might be something else. But trying the diet for two or three months, compared to a lifetime of symptoms and problems, isn't so bad. As for the...
