But what about now? ;-) (I worry about my husband on this front ... he's a carb-aholic himself. Getting him to switch from Sprite to Gatorade was a huge score in the carb-realm! ;-) )

ARCHIVED Ow! Renewed Respect For Diabetics!
tarnalberry replied to penguin's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Valium in an IV was certainly unpleasant. (That was for a closed MRI of my lower back - I'm claustrophobic, and needed the valium and a blindfold, and still had to work at not freaking out.) That stuff burns like HECK all up your arm and shoulder. OOOOooo, it was UNpleasant having that put in a vein. Having IV's taken out kinda sucks a lot anyway, when... -
ARCHIVED Blood Group And Agglutination
tarnalberry replied to SurreyGirl's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
No study has found a connection between celiac and blood type. Blood types appear at the same rate in celiacs as in the general population according to the studies I have seen. -
ARCHIVED Nearly There!
tarnalberry replied to SarahK's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I would encourage you, if you think there's a good chance that it is celiac, to try the gluten free diet, strictly, for at least two months, regardless of the test results. The diet itself is a diagnostic test. There are also other food intolerances that should be considered if that doesn't pan out. Never give up hope! -
I *think* it can simply come with age, particularly if you have a history of consuming a fair amount of sugar, or a history of not getting 'enough' exercise (where 'enough' is defined by your body). Gotta love genetics.

ARCHIVED How Do People Function Without Sleep?
tarnalberry replied to DingoGirl's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
exercise - a quick burst of something that'll give me a good endorphin rush. fast and hard, like a sprint. won't keep me going forever, but it's something. -
ARCHIVED Ow! Renewed Respect For Diabetics!
tarnalberry replied to penguin's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Yeah, I'm glad I've been easily able to control it with diet, because I *hate* the finger stick test part of donating blood. Almost worse than all the rest of it, and I'm not a big fan of the rest of it either. -
ARCHIVED Newly Diagnosed
tarnalberry replied to dionnek's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
By "sick", then, are you meaning throwing up? Most people don't react to gluten by throwing up, but by getting stomach pains, and stool abnormalities (diahrreah or constipation) within a few hours or days. There's also body aches, headaches, brain fog, fatigue, and moodiness, and a number of other symptoms, but they vary - significantly - from person to... -
ARCHIVED You Probably Get A Lot Of These, But I'm Lost
tarnalberry replied to Future-MrsCornell's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
you absolutely need to follow up with a doctor, particularly with blood on the stool. it could be celiac, though it could be a number of other things. I would encourage you to insist upon the celiac panel during testing, due to the malabsorption and IBS diagnosis early in life and difficulty maintaining weight, but do pursue a full workup. -
ARCHIVED Speed Of Onset Of Symptoms
tarnalberry replied to Dinbren's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I get dizzy/headachey in 15-30 minutes, and intestinal symptoms within 8 hours. Fatigue, bloating, and pain take no more than 12 hours. -
ARCHIVED General Questions
tarnalberry replied to Lister's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
whew! deep breath! :-) the most important thing is that, if you were in a deficiency 'state of emergency', you'd know it. it'd be an emergency. definitely no need to panic! I'm a little confused on what you wrote about your testing. You said that you've had miscellanous blood work, an upper GI (what does that entail, in this case?) and some x-rays... -
ARCHIVED General Questions
tarnalberry replied to Lister's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Yes, it's a serious problem. And yes, it just means you have to avoid gluten for ever. Some people have additional complications that come from the damage that was done to their intestines for years and years, not knowing they had celiac disease. Continuing to eating gluten, and continuing to damage your intestines, when you have celiac disease can lead... -
ARCHIVED Breakfast, gluten-free, Low Carb, High Protein, Ideas Needed
tarnalberry replied to VydorScope's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I've never reacted to a Clif Nectar bar, but it's a packaged, processed food, even if it's a fairly benign one at that. Can't be ruled out, but neither can the other stuff. With things like that, however, that I've had before without having a problem, I don't throw out the potentially offending item immediately. A LOT of things can go wrong with our bodies... -
ARCHIVED Scared Of Getting Glutened While Away
tarnalberry replied to Moongirl's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I second (third?, fourth?) the idea of carrying plenty of portable food with you so you aren't tempted to have something you aren't certain about. Other than that, there aren't any guarantees, but everyone's reactions are different - if you haven't been strapped to a bathroom in the past from reactions, there's no reason to expect you'll suddenly be so in... -
ARCHIVED Celiac Is Diagnosed, But Distorted, On Fox's ''house''
tarnalberry replied to Claire's topic in Publications & Publicity
See... this almost works better... Having something not quite right that can be corrected in more detail later. Stirs up the controversy buttons amongst those who don't know what celiac is about, and they're more likely to remember the details *because* of that controversy. :-) Thanks for posting that. -

*hugs* good luck. add a little extra olive oil to those potatoes! (works well in mashed potatoes) -
ARCHIVED Gluten Free Graham Craker Thingys?
tarnalberry replied to Smunkeemom's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
what's-its-name... Mi-del! They have ginger molasses cookies that would work great for that. And they're tasty enough for the non-gluten-free people too. -
Ramapo Valley (East Coast) New Grist (East Coast) La Messagere (Canadian) Bi-Aglut (Italian) Bards Tale (West Coast, but currently unavailable) (Those are the ones I know of, at the moment. Since I'm in the midst of looking into this subject. :-D )

ARCHIVED Looking For Chili Seasoning Mix
tarnalberry replied to msserena's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
*smacks head* duh! can't forget the cumin, 'cause chili has beans! (only a very little bit in chili for me, though.) -
Yeah, it's sad that natural, whole-fat, plain yogurt is so hard to find. You'll find that plain yogurt is usually lowest in carbs, and you can add some jam/jelly to sweeten it, but at your own quantity without getting quite as much sugar as they often add up to. If you have Trader Joe's nearby, they have greek yogurt that's tasty, and higher in fat/protein...

ARCHIVED Oatmeal?
tarnalberry replied to dionnek's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
oats are a controverisal topic. here's what we know: 1) virtually all commerical oats are contaminated with wheat at levels above the 200ppm european CODEX standard for 'gluten free'. this includes Quaker, McCanns, and Country Pride. two companies (one in the US, and one in Canada (I think)) are starting to market and sell (via mail order) uncontaminated... -
See Vincent, proof that dealing hypoglycemic stuff is an individualized "figure out what works for you" sort of thing. ChelsE knows she does fine with dry cereal, so she has it; I know I don't, so I primarily avoid the stuff. (Though, I'll add that if I'm eating well, I can sometimes deal with it in the afternoons.) She knows a soda will help her in a...

Ok, ok... flax meal then. :-) In combination with gluten-free hot cereal. Most gluten-free dry cereals are just too carb-y for me. :-(
-
I'm glad you're getting in to see your doc, and your real doc. In the mean time, frequent, balanced meals, and you'll do ok. :-) If you're back on gluten, you can make hot cereal that's just oat bran - tasty, and 25% fat, 25% protein, 50% carbs, with plenty of fiber. Add raisins and cinnamon, and it's like eating a creamy oatmeal cookie. :-)

ARCHIVED Looking For Chili Seasoning Mix
tarnalberry replied to msserena's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I use a *little* bit of italian spices (mostly sage, but add in just a touch of oregano and thyme, and then a pile (2 tbsp or so) of chili powder. I never use prepackaged "I'm for this type of food" spices - blend your own! (Though chili powder is already a blend, of course.) I generally use Spice Hunter, but McCormick's chili powder is fine too. I also...
