ARCHIVED Hidden Gluten In Drinks?
tarnalberry replied to Billygoat's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
hehe :-) yep. do check the ingredients, of course, particularly on herbals, as toasted barley appears in some teas. (it's flavorful - like toasted rice in asian tea.) but many are gluten free. (celestial seasonings will list "gluten free" on the bottom of the box, even!) -
ARCHIVED Out Of Shape Kids...
tarnalberry replied to Jnkmnky's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
If I have kids, I'll work. Not because I have to, but because I want to. And I don't think there's a problem with that. (Not saying anyone here has said it's wrong, just working my way through the statement of my opinion on this topic.) But whether a parent doesn't work, works because he or she has to, or works because he or she wants to, that's no excuse... -
ARCHIVED How Long For Test Results?
tarnalberry replied to lonewolf's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
depends on the lab and the doc. expect at least a week, it may be two or three. by three, I'd call. -
ARCHIVED Horrible Restaurant Experience
tarnalberry replied to NY Hubbers's topic in Gluten-Free Restaurants
Here's the thing, people make mistakes. Yes, I realize that it's your health (and my health! I'm in the same boat), but you are putting yourself at risk with food that you don't prepare yourself. It's always a question of determining what an acceptable risk is. In a situation like that, I think a lawsuit is not appropriate, because - as has been noted... -
ARCHIVED Hidden Gluten In Drinks?
tarnalberry replied to Billygoat's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
it's something of a celiac urban legend that tea bags are held together with a wheat based glue. no company ever called has said that - and all the ones I've talked to have noted they are steam pressed. it doesn't even make much sense to use a wheat based glue, because it would dissolve in the water! -
ARCHIVED Vitamin Water
tarnalberry replied to flagbabyds's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
yes, I called and asked, all flavors are gluten-free. -
ARCHIVED He Got Gluten...
tarnalberry replied to cherie012's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
actually, even if it says "gluten free" do read the labels. there's been at least two items I've seen labeled gluten free that had oats - one was the Lame Advertisement energy bar that Kaiti posted about a few days back. -
ARCHIVED Eating Disorders/weight Loss

Miso can be fermented on barley, so you have to be vary careful to find out what kind of miso you have. -
ARCHIVED There Is Hope---but Not Out Of The Water Yet
tarnalberry replied to chrissy's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
she needs to make sure to get the equivalent of about three slices of wheat bread a day, every day, but other than that, trying gluten free recipes with gluten-based stuff isn't a problem. a lot of stuff you make may already be gluten free. -
ARCHIVED Muscle Soreness
tarnalberry replied to julie5914's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
that'll happen to me if I'm fighting a virus (even with no nasal/head symptoms) or have an asthma exacerbation (even without coughing, and I never wheeze). I don't get it so much with gluten, but other things can cause it, so if it continues to be a problem, you might consider talking to your doc about it further. -
ARCHIVED Eggnog
tarnalberry replied to Corky1369's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
while it should often be, there's no way to make a blanket statement, or assumption about all the different manufacturers and versions of eggnog. read the ingredients, and if there is a questionable one, call the manufacturer. some people may have posted about brands they've already checked on here. I do know that Silk Nog is Gluten-free Casein-free. -
ARCHIVED Orange Julius Products
tarnalberry replied to Rusla's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Somebody wrote to Orange Julius a while back, and the corporate office definitely did not say that. Just because it's a powder doesn't mean it has gluten. -
This is a post from Nathela, who was having a little difficulty posting earlier, and asked for some help via PM:

ARCHIVED I Need A Gluten Free, Soy Free, And Dairy Free Cooking Oil!
tarnalberry replied to a topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Olive? Canola? Peanut? Hazelnut? Coconut? Avocado? Grapeseed? Tea? I don't know that I understand the question. Any oil that isn't, say, wheat bran oil, or doesn't have anything added to it, like parmesean cheese in a dipping oil, is going to be gluten and dairy free. Any oil that doesn't use soy in it (or in the flavors inside it), will be soy... -
ARCHIVED Glutened At Christmas Party
tarnalberry replied to Kenster61's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
There are few people I trust to cook safely for me - and that includes some friends. Not because I don't trust them to try, but because I know how easy it is to overlook things, even if you do remember to check all the ingredients, even on items that you think should be obvious. In situations like those, I always bring my own food, or eat before hand. ... -
ARCHIVED Eating Disorders/weight Loss
tarnalberry replied to sillyyak's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Malnutrition can happen on this diet the same way it happens on other diets - by not choosing a wide enough selection of food (or enough food). The diet needn't be high in protein at all - fruits, vegetables, non gluten grains, beans and legumes all contain lots of carbohydrates, and there are plenty of fat sources out there! :-) Not everyone gains weight...
