ARCHIVED Eating Out For New Year's Eve
tarnalberry replied to teacher1578's topic in Gluten-Free Restaurants
A higher-end restaurant will be better able to accomodate you, and most restaurants will deviate from the menu if you ask (particularly if you inform them that it's for medical reasons). I would advise calling ahead, to make reservations, and talking to the manager at the time about the best way to avoid gluten when you come in. -
ARCHIVED Gluten In Medication?
tarnalberry replied to ebrbetty's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
You would first ask your pharmacist, and if they don't know (which is somewhat likely), you would call the manufacturer of the drug (given to you by the pharmacist if it's a generic, along with the phone number), and ask them. You can check the www.glutenfreedrug.com site, but calling the company is a bit more guaranteed. (I've use the list without any... -
ARCHIVED Aaahhhhh ? Problems With Dairy
tarnalberry replied to Bonnie's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I don't need dairy, and I can't have dairy, but there is no great substitute for some of the tasty dairy products, like cheese and yogurt (if you're not doing soy). (Nope, still haven't gotten starter to make my own almond yogurt or rice yogurt.) But the holy grail of cheese... oh, how I miss mozerrella! -
ARCHIVED Going Crazy!
tarnalberry replied to Goliadman's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Ditto what Richard said on the meat. I generally don't buy any specialty gluten-free stuff anyway. I focus on meat, vegetables, fruit, rice, and beans. I'll get the gluten-free grains like millet, quinoa, and buckwheat, but that stuff is becoming easier to find in mainstream stores - particularly quinoa. -
ARCHIVED Mini Gluten Challenge
tarnalberry replied to Nantzie's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Listen to your body! It sounds like you need to avoid gluten. You're husband doesn't live in your body, so it's not his decision to make, or to disrespect. -
ARCHIVED Chicken Broth
tarnalberry replied to ebrbetty's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I second, third, or whatever, the recommendation for Imagine brand broth. I prefer the organic chicken broth for almost anything, but I like the vegetable for making vegetarian/vegan dishes. -
ARCHIVED Is Splenda Making You Sick?
tarnalberry replied to Rae's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Splenda, or any other artificial sugar, can cause problems in people who are sensitive to it. The only way to find out is to get rid of it for a bit, and try again. You don't even really need to replace it, if you're willing to give yourself some time to adjust to less sweet tastes. You can use things like agave (lower glycemic index and a bit sweeter... -
ARCHIVED Anyone Have Any Vacation Recommendations?
tarnalberry replied to buluga's topic in Traveling with Celiac Disease
If you go someplace tropical, and rent a condo, you can cook your own food and avoid the risk of contamination. On the other hand, Europe could be a good place as well. -
ARCHIVED Abdominal Distention?
tarnalberry replied to FaggieFresh420's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Being new to the gluten-free diet, it may take a while for it to go down. However, the human body *naturally* has some "abdominal distention" in the sense that it isn't flat from rib cage to illiac crest. The intestines take up space, and there may be a small bulge there as par for the course. Every body is slightly different, but depending how severe... -
ARCHIVED Does Anyone Else Get Unnaturally Excited...
tarnalberry replied to Lauren M's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I certainly get excited, but I refuse to call it unnaturally. :-P :-D hehehe... :-) -
ARCHIVED Help With A Grocery List Please
tarnalberry replied to patricia's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
depends on the season. at the moment, it's: breakfast: eggs or rice cakes with peanut butter or gluten-free cereal with soy milk or pancakes with fruit jam lunch: leftovers from dinner or bean salad or tuna tacos and fruit and raw veggies dinner: chicken/shrimp/pork stir fries or chili (vegetarian or w/ turkey) or roast chicken and vegetables or grilled... -
ARCHIVED Blood Tests?
tarnalberry replied to ebrbetty's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
You should be eating three to four slices of bread (or the equivalent) for three months straight before blood tests. The reason they're saying it's a waste of time is because, if you want to get the blood test, it's going to take you three months of going back on gluten to do it. -
ARCHIVED Might Be A Weird Question....
tarnalberry replied to Moongirl's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
No, I have never found one that does. But, you can be sensitive to latex, or the lubricant that they put on the condom. While nonoxyl-9 (spermicide) is a VERY common irritant, other ingredients, such as propylene glycol, can be irriating. You can find unlubricated condoms and buy lube separately. -
ARCHIVED Aaahhhhh ? Problems With Dairy
tarnalberry replied to Bonnie's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
It could well be milk. I also wonder what type of testing you had. I can't have milk myself, and have read that exacerbation of heart burn can happen with milk. -
ARCHIVED Frustrated
tarnalberry replied to lopo7883's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Yep, just echoing the "I also didn't have conclusive results, but the dietary challenge certainly demonstrated it was an issue" sentiment. -
ARCHIVED I'd Like Opinions On Enterolab Tests
tarnalberry replied to CMCM's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Enterolab's tests haven't been published and peer reviewed, hence most insurance companies won't pay for it and many doctors won't accept the results. I'm not saying it's "out there", I'm merely saying it hasn't been accepted by the scientific community. Given how long it takes for something new to be accepted by the scientific community, that doesn't necessarily... -
ARCHIVED New Lab Results, Help!
tarnalberry replied to rmhansen's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
If she's getting gluten even at the rate of once a month, it's too much, and pretty much as though she weren't on the diet at all. Keep working on tracking down those hidden glutens and sources of contamination and double check all her food, toys, and toilettries. -
ARCHIVED Questions About Teeth Problems.
tarnalberry replied to Rusla's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I responded on your other post about this subject. Do check with the dentist to make sure you're not just finding a gluten-free antibiotic, but a gluten-free antibiotic that is appropriate for this type of work. -
ARCHIVED Arrowhead Mills Rice Flour Being Bitter
tarnalberry replied to taneil's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
If the flours have gone bad, that could be part of the problem. Smell them to determine this. I had to throw out some flours after this happened, myself. -
ARCHIVED 15 W/ Celiac, And It's Just Getting Harder
tarnalberry replied to Sophie's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
If it's any consolation, when you get older, your friends won't behave so childishly, and it will be easier to not associate with people who do behave that childishly. I know, not a lot of help right now... But yeah, they're not you're friends if they're hurting you that way. -
Most antibiotics are gluten-free (of course you have to check, but most are). I do know that zithromax is, but that tends to be a respiratory infection medication, not necessarily for preventing infection in oral surgery. Talk to the dentist, or whoever is prescribing the antibiotics. Many are well known for causing stomach distress all on their own (diahreah...

Given that the foods aren't necessary (as in, there are a lot of inexpensive, naturally gluten-free foods like beans, rice, fruit, vegetables, milk, cheese, meat, eggs, etc.), there is some debate as to whether or not the IRS is going to play nice with taking the medical deduction for the higher price of gluten-free specialty foods. (Some accountants won...

ARCHIVED Okay Sooo Do I Ahve celiac disease Or Am I Sick In Head?
tarnalberry replied to VydorScope's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Listen to your body. Celiac or not, you need to avoid the stuff! :-) -
ARCHIVED It's Official... We Can Eat Oats!
tarnalberry replied to jkmunchkin's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
From the studies on oats in celiacs, a small percentage of celiacs DO get intestinal damage (as determined by biopsy) when eating oats. The number is small, but the avenin protein is very similar to the gliandin protein, and it's thought that the similarity causes the immune system in some celiacs to still recognize it as "evil". It's very much a "eater... -
ARCHIVED Casein Intolerance Symptoms
tarnalberry replied to Felidae's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Constipation (in the "very dense and hard" sense) and a not-so-lovely exacerbation of my hemmhroids. Bleh. Headache and abdominal achiness are also usually par for the course. It's nothing awful (besides the hemmhroids), but it's definitely better to avoid it!
