ARCHIVED Damage From Intolerance Only?
tarnalberry replied to Sk8ing's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
"Allergies" are an IgE mediated immune response. Intolerances (classic ones, not things like lactose or sucrose intolerance caused by a lacking enzyme) are IgG mediated immune responses. Most IgG food intolerances are NOT autoimmune, but celiac is. -
ARCHIVED Gluten/sulfite Free Alcohol
tarnalberry replied to danikali's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
BTW, others I have known with sulfite problems report that they can drink organic wine without any trouble. This may be a "your mileage may vary" bit of advice, however. -
ARCHIVED This Is So Infuriating!
tarnalberry replied to CMCM's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I do not usually have a problem with "manufactured in the same plant" items, but I'm choosy about which ones I'll do. Dried fruit, no. Salsa, yes. (It has to do with how likely I think it is that 1) cleaning can be thoroughly done (easier for wet than dry), and 2) how much is likely to be picked up by the foods (more for stickier things).) But it is a... -
ARCHIVED Oats, Are They Ok To Eat?
tarnalberry replied to nobeer4me's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I like Lungberg Farms Cream of Rice, but the Nabisco (or whoever makes Cream of Wheat) kind you can find almost everywhere is good too. Bob's Red Mill's has more texture (coarser cut), if you prefer that. -
ARCHIVED Bloated Belly
tarnalberry replied to lovetoeat's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
It's fine if you were only fasting the one day, but it does mean that you should avoid gluten. -
ARCHIVED Can You Be Gluten Intolerant And Not Cd
tarnalberry replied to GUSSLER9's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Did you use Kellogg's Rice Crispies? If so, it's got gluten in it. -
ARCHIVED My Husband Is The Problem Help
tarnalberry replied to a topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
If you sit down and talk to him, calmly, about why he thinks that once a week is alright, despite the hard evidence you've shown him and the doctor has told him to the contrary, what does he say? This is aggrivating, frustrating, dangerous, and stupid, I agree, but you guys are going to have to work together on this one, because you can't watch her yourself... -
ARCHIVED Test Results In :(
tarnalberry replied to VydorScope's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
None of the other tests are for celiac? Then that result is TOTALLY useless. I can't even begin to fathom why they bothered. If you're IgA deficient, as many celiacs are, then a low tTg IgA tells you *nothing*. They need to run the other tests as well. Sigh... I'm sorry they screwed up the testing. -
ARCHIVED Please Help
tarnalberry replied to danikali's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I concur with the idea of doing an elimination diet at this point. You'll have to avoid any processed foods - that includes the crackers you're eating - to do a thorough job at an elimination diet, and if you do a rigourous, strict one, it's really no fun and takes a while, but it is an invaluable source of information. -
ARCHIVED Bloated Belly
tarnalberry replied to lovetoeat's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Yes, it could well be related to gluten if this happens after eating foods that contain gluten. It can also be a sign of lactose intolerance, if it's happening after consuming dairy. Depending on how much it swells up, it may be normal - a small amount of "growing belly" after eating *is* normal, although it can look pronounced in shorter or thinner people... -
ARCHIVED Xanthan Gum, Guar Gum Ok?
tarnalberry replied to johnny's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
both ingredients are fine, gluten-wise, but some people are bothered, intestinally, by either. -
I'm glad you're feeling so much better! I know it's been tough, and we're glad to have you back!

ARCHIVED Test Results In :(
tarnalberry replied to VydorScope's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
That's the only test? Which IgA is that even reporting? -
ARCHIVED Thanks To Lj And Tiff
tarnalberry replied to VegasCeliacBuckeye's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
I'm glad it went so well! :-) -
ARCHIVED Christmas Gifts - What gluten-free Books?
tarnalberry replied to Lisa's topic in Publications & Publicity
Shelly Cases' Gluten Free Resource Guide is a nice reference - has lots of company contact information as well. -
ARCHIVED Can You Be Gluten Intolerant And Not Cd
tarnalberry replied to GUSSLER9's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
*Technically* CELIAC disease means that you've had biopsy evidence that you have flattened villi and blood evidence that you have antigliandin antibodies. So, I refer to myself as gluten intolerant, because I never had a biopsy and can't tell you if I've got any intestinal damage, but I know that my body doesn't react well to gluten by dietary challenge... -
ARCHIVED Need Advice For 7 Year Old Daughter With Celiac
tarnalberry replied to Mom of celiac's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
With the length of time this is continuing, I would give a second consideration to a psychologist - but like any other professional, they can be hit or miss, and you have to find one who works well for your daughter. Perhaps talking to her, and helping her understand and take control of her own coping strategies would help. Making sure she has all the... -
ARCHIVED Substitute For Sour Cream?
tarnalberry replied to Claire's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
I wish I had a recipe! There are some to be found on the internet if you google it, but I haven't tried making it yet, as dairy free starter can be hard to get. (Someone posted a link in response to my asking about it the other day in another thread.) I second the idea earlier about cashew sour cream. I make "ranch dressing" from cashews all the time... -
ARCHIVED Mccann's Irish Oatmeal & Udo's Oil 3-6-9
tarnalberry replied to pete1976's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Ditto what Kaiti said on the oats. For the oil - what kind of bran is it? corn bran? rice bran? wheat bran? oat bran? the first two would be alright, the last two would not be. -
If you're anything like me, and occasionally crave gummy candy, I know that the health food store does carry a vegan gummy bear. They're expensive, and not available everywhere, but they're out there. (For a while, as I recall, there was a lot of trouble getting a good, reliable vegan gummy candy...)

Casein is the primary protein in milk - any mammalian milk, be it cow, goat, sheep, whale, or human. There are different subtypes of casein, and different animals produce milk that has different proportions of the subtypes of casein, which is why some people report that they can handle goat's milk, even if they can't handle cow's milk. Like gluten, the...

ARCHIVED Yeast Infections And Gluten Intolerence
tarnalberry replied to danikali's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
With that frequency, I would encourage you to find out the answers to the following questions: * Are there other medications you're taking that predispose you to yeast infections? (Antibiotics and corticosteroids being two common ones.) * Are you actually clearing the yeast infection with the treatments you're using? * Do you have a strain of yeast that... -
ARCHIVED Rice Based Stuffing Secret
tarnalberry replied to tarnalberry's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
What I made this year was the following: 1 cup chopped chanterelle mushrooms 1 cup finely chopped carrots 1 cup finely chopped onion 1 cup finely chopped celery 1 cup Lundberg Farms brown and wild rice blend 1/4 cup arborio rice (risotto) (you can use more if you want) 6 to 8 cups chicken broth (I use Imagine brand) 1/2 tsp oregano 1/2 tsp basil... -
ARCHIVED Rice Based Stuffing Secret
tarnalberry posted a topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
So, I've posted all the tasty stuff we had for Thanksgiving this year, which turned out *really* well according to the family and the friend who joined us. I was particularly happy with the stuffing this year, because I had struggled to replace the creamy texture that I loved from bread based stuffing. But I found the secret - risotto! I usually use a... -
ARCHIVED Gluten&dairy Free Chocolate
tarnalberry replied to Rae's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I haven't had a problem with Tropical Source chocolate, and love the taste, but I'm not extraordinarily sensitive to trace casein, so that may be a difference.
