  1. Vitamin Water is gluten free. It's really just fancy sugar water, though, so if you're looking for vitamins, I'd get some vitamins. (I use it in place of Gatorade - times when I am specifically looking for the sugar.) (The sugar free version is then just artificially flavored fancy water. I'd stick with water.)
  2. Just my opinion, but there's no negotiating needed on anything regarding your child with anyone except your husband. Your child, your rules. Period. They don't have to like it; they only have to accept that it's what is going to happen. (No one likes a broken leg, but there's no choice but to accept it.) This may mean completely ignoring someone berating...
  3. sushi is a go-to food for me if I can't find anything else. some have reported gluten in the rice, but I've never seen it. (seasoned rice vinegar, yes, but I've never seen one that had gluten.) if it's a very basic place, perhaps all I get is an avocado roll or a tuna roll, but some places have lots more creative things; menus vary widely by restaurant...

    ARCHIVED Sick Of Being Ignored

There's not a lot they're going to do right now, since you're pregnant. Standard blood tests for vitamin deficiencies and what not should already have been run at the beginning of your pregnancy, so those issues should be known about. Much other testing would have to wait until after delivery anyway. I know it's not exactly what you want to hear, but things...
  5. The reaction in the body can sustain itself for two weeks after the initial gluten exposure. (Doing damage that whole time, I might add.) It may be a few weeks before you feel better.
  6. nausea is a classic symptom of hypoglycemia. are your meals well balanced for protein/carbs/fat?
  7. The easiest way to keep costs down and reduce the risk of picking up something you shouldn't is to just cook from scratch with naturally gluten free ingredients. You may need to rethink some of your "go to" meals. Substitutes, like rice pasta, are more expensive and don't "taste the same", so skip the pasta and make something else. Perhaps spaghetti sauce...
  8. no, gluten is passed through the breastmilk and will cause a reaction in her. you need to be gluten free for as long as she's breastfeeding. (and we're happy to help you do that! this doesn't need to be a cause for early weaning!)
  9. true, but doctors seem to confuse blood test for celiac with blood tests for illnesses with respect to finding antibodies. I'd call back and get clarification (or educate them ).
  10. I do think "so I have food intolerances. big deal." I don't take them lightly, but they're not a "big deal" either. And I can't fathom extended family members or friends calling me just to see how I was feeling about needing to be gluten free. I didn't expect that when our baby was born, and the dietary change is a far smaller thing in my life. I don...
  11. I'd talk to her about what she's finding unsupportive. Different people have different needs. She might want you (particularly at first) to avoid those pizza parties with her, or she might want you to go and not mention the food. (The latter isn't likely, but is what I would want.) So talk to her, find out what would be supportive to her. Though, of course...
  12. Yes, and this is why, if I were going through it, I would just go gluten free, and test later (either after birth or after finishing breastfeeding). To me, the cost/benefit ratio weighs much more heavily on the "protect the baby" side.
  13. If you've been gluten free for a few weeks, you'd have to go back on gluten for a while. There isn't any sort of prescription or the like that you need in order to be gluten free, so a biopsy-proven diagnosis is not really that important. (Unless you want to take part in studies on celiacs. They tend to require biopsy proof.)
  14. If you have been gluten free, the tests will not do any good. That said, if you're also pregnant and strongly suspect celiac, I couldn't advise eating gluten for testing, because of the potential risks. I hope the doctor has some useful help for you, though.
  15. Avoiding exercise is likely to make you stiffer, because you're not moving your body. Joints need movement to circulate synovial fluid. (Even non-synovial joints need movement to pump nutrients through the joint.) It could be that you need a different type of movement for now, however. (My two cents as a yoga teacher - any given yoga practice can be great...
  16. Bob's Red Mill makes two varieties of oats - one is processed in their gluten-free facilities and is tested, the other isn't. You have to make sure to get the oats that are labeled gluten free.
  17. Endoscopies are not 100% accurate (for a variety of reasons). there's no reason not to ask for the blood work, and no reason not to try him on the gluten free diet for a couple weeks. think of it as an experiment - does this make him feel any better?
  18. Reactions to medications can occur at any time - and often do take a number of days to develop.
  19. What you describe is an allergic reaction, NOT a celiac reaction. Please call your doc - you guys need to find out what you're allergic to ASAP.
  20. I would pack an extra bag with shelf stable food. No, it's not ideal, but backpackers carry their own food with them, and it's definitely doable. You might also look into the public transportation system for getting you to a grocery store or see if there is anything in walking distance (which the hotel can hopefully help you with).
  21. Eggs are dairy free. Dairy is milk, coming from the mammary glands of mammals. Eggs come from the reproductive tract of a chicken. No casein in eggs.
  22. What I don't like about the genetic tests is that - espeically in the US - they only test for two genes. There are other genes that have been identified as contributing to celiac (or non-celiac gluten intolerance), so you can test negative on a gene test but still have a gene that is problematic. Then, even if you do test positive, it doesn't tell you much...
  23. You're right - it does make a difference. I just have a general frustration at medicating society because people don't choose healthy foods. This is one of the few fortifications that has documented, real, and significant impact.
  24. Check the bag. In the US, many brands of rice are enriched (usually with folic acid) because "they" thought it would be a good idea to do this with such a common, low nutrition food. If you rinse these rices, you lose the added enrichment, but not all rices are enriched.
  25. pound of ground meat, can of black beans, can of either kidney beans, two cans of diced tomatoes, one onion, cumin, chili powder, garlic (or garlic powder) optionally, and tomato paste to thicken. this is one of my go-to quick dishes. (if only my husband would eat it... but he hates tomatoes.)
