I find the regular San-J tamari too strong, and use the reduced sodium variety. Tastes great to me. (I do keep it in the fridge, of course.)

fiddle-faddle, thank you for posting the additional information. I'm not sure that I agree with the conclusions - but that's fairly common in areas where there is much conflicting information and/or data.

ARCHIVED Good "sick" Foods For Sick Kids
tarnalberry replied to nmlove's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
when I'm not feeling well, one pot dishes sit best with me. chicken and rice soup. beef stew. but sometimes something cold - like a smoothie - feels better. -
ARCHIVED Antibiotic Bases?
tarnalberry replied to Byron of Ashwood's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Not really anything you can do other than call companies. You might also see if you can find a compounding pharmacy within reasonable mailing (or driving) distance from you so it can be made to order. -
ARCHIVED Gluten Free Non Dairy Drink?
tarnalberry replied to homemaker's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Depends on the cereal, really. The best all around bet to me is unsweetened almond milk. -
ARCHIVED Iron Questions
tarnalberry replied to Frances03's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I was use SlowFe for a while, and that worked fine. When I got pregnant, my stomach went generally cranky, so I'm now using a liquid supplement (so I can vary the dose more easily) added to my morning orange juice (and my prenatal has another full dose as well). -
That's the whole point of using winning a prize, rather than losing. The odds are the same. Even if you put the variation in odds at 1 in 100 and 1 in 1,000 (which I have no data to back up the idea that there really are (or should be) 20,000 vaccine related hospitalizations every year from the flu shot, which is what that would amount to). Additionally...

ARCHIVED Diet Changed, Symptoms Not - Any Point In Tests?
tarnalberry replied to JPSinMN's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Is he still getting breastmilk? If so, he could be getting gluten from you if you're eating it. For that matter, what is he drinking? He must be putting something in his mouth other than chicken, apples, bananas, and rice, and sodium fluoride drops. (At least water, I suppose! ) Is there gluten in the house he could be contaminated with? Alternatively... -
ARCHIVED Breast Tenderness
tarnalberry replied to Becci's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
two and a half weeks ago might have been too long ago for the test to have been accurate. while many women will get an accurate test by the time they're a few days late, not all will. I would consider retesting (even with a home test). and then work with your gyn a bit more. it's possible that the pill is no longer right for your system, and you may... -
The thing I don't like about all the "rare side effect from X covered on the news" is that it is incredibly misleading. It is WELL KNOWN that there is a VERY SMALL risk of serious side effects from most anything. ("Perfectly safe" has never meant "perfect"; it's a figure of speech.) The issue is the odds - the odds of a life-threatening/altering complication...

ARCHIVED Trouble With Kinnikinnick Donuts
tarnalberry replied to finally diagnosed's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
three doughnuts over one day would make me feel incredibly ill. too much sugar and refined carbs. -
ARCHIVED Midol - Safe?
tarnalberry replied to DownWithGluten's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I had to get off the pill. It was partially the cramps, and partially a bunch of other effects. Basically, it didn't "sit well" with me. Of course, I tried a number of different ones first - and you might consider doing that to change the progesterone type you're getting, and dosage. It wasn't celebrex - it wasn't a "popular" RA med at all, but one... -
ARCHIVED Anthing To Use In The Place Of Olive/canola Oil When Cooking?
tarnalberry replied to Liveenjoylife's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
you could try something like corn oil, or something like avocado oil, nut oils, or tea oil (not tea tree, but the camellia sinensis plant that produces tea leaves for steeping). -
ARCHIVED How Soon After Eating Gluten Might A Celiac Sufferer Feel The Effects?
tarnalberry replied to Skrael's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
totally varies for different people. it could be as soon as 15 minutes, or as long as a day or two. if your doctors refuse to give you the bloodwork when you ask for it (though make sure you're eating gluten for a while before asking for it), then you can always try the diet yourself, and see if it makes any difference. Testing is the best option, but... -
ARCHIVED Eat Gluten Before Taking Celiac Test?
tarnalberry replied to freeatlast's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Standard blood tests at the doctor's office consist of a panel of: Total IgA Anti-gliadin IgA Anti-gliadin IgG Tissue Transglutamase (sp?) IgG Endomyosial Antibodies Unfortunately, in order to be reasonably confident that there is enough damage to the intestines to cause the antibodies to get into the bloodstream in quantities to detect, you need... -
ARCHIVED Midol - Safe?
tarnalberry replied to DownWithGluten's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I don't know. What I would do for cramps (and I mean freakishly bad cramps that had my doctor put me on rheumatoid arthritis drugs at one point) is the following: 1) stopped taking the birth control pill - not that they aren't bad without it, but it's not two days of down time where you just curl into a ball, just half a day, and then two days of pain... -
ARCHIVED 2nd Trimester Issues, Advice Needed
tarnalberry replied to kodif8's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
There's no way to ever know what caused this. But untreated celiac can increase the risk of miscarriage (some theories work on the idea of malnutrition), so, if you suspect that you might be celiac, please be diligent in avoiding gluten from now on. Don't fret too much about the past, move forward doing the best you can. -
one thing I'll do is make a whole bunch of pancakes on the weekend, and freeze some. zap 2 or 3 of them in the microwave at home for 30 seconds, and they're done. but pancakes, on their own, are simply not suitable for breakfast unless I want a hypoglycemic episode an hour later (and I really dislike the nausea that comes along with that), so I top them...

ARCHIVED Do Girl Puppies Get Uti's?
tarnalberry replied to TrillumHunter's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
What kind of dog? Different dogs *should* weigh very different amounts, so it's hard to say. Has she gained weight since you've gotten her? Any dog can get a UTI. Is she eating? Is she pooping? I would definitely call the vet - they are quite used to puppy parents, especially new puppy parents, call in with questions, and will likely get back to you... -
ARCHIVED Lunch Help, Please.
tarnalberry replied to hilwacat's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
common dinners (that lead to leftovers for lunch) around here are: chicken-rice soup beef stew chinese stir fry lentil soup salmon pasta salad though, last night I made summer rolls (like spring rolls, but with rice paper wraps, and not fried, but served cold) - quite tasty, and make a good lunch too. -
ARCHIVED Speaking Of Dog Food
tarnalberry replied to chiroptera's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I avoid gluten in my dog food. Why? Well, the scoop I use for the food may get set down on the counter. Neo (standard poodle! ) *loves* to like hands, arms, pants, toes (anything) after eating or drinking. And occasionally a piece of food falls onto the counter. The dog certainly doesn't need it, and it's just a lot easier if it's not there at all. -
There are a number of grain-free dry dog foods. Dogs do not need any grain as a carb source. (They metabolize protein more efficiently. And while they are scavengers/hunters and do get some grain/carbs in their "wild" diet, it comes from the stomach contents of what they've killed, a bit of grass/leaf played with here and there, and the other odd plant...

ARCHIVED Breast Tenderness

is there *any* chance you're pregnant? this is a very common 'first symptom' of pregnancy. -
ARCHIVED Lactose Intolerant People. Help : )
tarnalberry replied to pufffee's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
lactic acid starter culture is generally considered to be a dairy ingredient, albeit a very minute one. I've never found a true pepperoni (just one salami) that didn't have dairy in it. (Most usually also contain dry milk, but this can vary.)
