  1. restless leg usually does occur later at night, particularly near bed time, and particularly when the legs are still and elevated. it is related to low iron levels in the blood *AND* low iron stores in the body. (so have *BOTH* checked.) I developed RLS long after going gluten free, but supplementing with iron seems to have significantly helped my RLS...
  2. Really, it's just helped me be more conscious that everything is a choice. From avoiding the foods we need to, to the maintaining healthy interpersonal relationships, to having jobs that don't take more from us than they give. Sure, there may be sacrifice in our choices, but there's something we gain in all of them as well, and having that to think about...
  3. Theo Chocolate Michel Cluizel Castelain These three don't have soy lecithin. I've found all of them locally, oddly enough, though it'll likely depend on where you live. They're not cheap, but *good* chocolate isn't. (I've always thought of Lindt as a bit waxy... too much lecithin, perhaps...)
  4. /facepalm. I totally mis-interpreted your post. my apologies. I'm leaving my response, on the chance anyone finds it worthwhile. but yeah - some people do not have apparent digestive issues, and just neurologic or autoimmune. (of course, that can be digestive in nature, as some neurologic issues stem from nutrient deficiencies...)
  5. 2 things I learned in my prenatal/postnatal yoga teacher training: EAT PROTEIN! Your body - by week 26, has to produce 50% more blood volume than you usually have; that requires a lot of protein. EAT LIKE A HYPOGLYCEMIC! Your energy needs are higher, and your blood sugar is wonky due to that, and the hormones. Simple carbs aren't so good. Root...
  6. if you really want to know, find someone you trust, and ask them to randomly gluten you - without you knowing, and not telling you - once in a month. have them give you completely gluten free food at random times throughout the month, but *one* of those times, it has to have gluten. find something that you cannot tell is gluten (maybe add some breadcrumbs...
  7. I would tell him, the next time he says, "the damage is done", "Bull! Your lack of respect has not given me A CHANCE to heal. I'm tired of being sick to compensate for your laziness. Either behave in your gluten eating habits, don't eat gluten in the house, or don't eat in the house at all!"
  8. To add to what Tim-in-VA said, that threshold is VERY LOW. Not - "oh, I can eat a crust of bread" low, but "oh, a sprinkle of flour dropped into the 50 gallon drum of sauce" low. It's "basic" chemistry. The gluten molecule gets to your gut, and your immune system starts fighting your body. Chemistry doesn't stop if there is only a little bit of something...
  9. while I understand larry mac's sarcasm, I get the idea that you have other things going on in your life at the moment, medically, that may make it quite difficult. I would consider it totally valid to ask for a postponement for jury duty rather than rescheduling a surgery. Just using the diet as an excuse - meh, bring your own food. (I've done it before...
  10. Read the travel section - lots of people still travel. I certainly do, though I tend to do the same thing my husband and I have always done (because we're a bit cost-efficient this way): we find places with kitchens and do some of our own cooking while there. Europe is one place you'll find a lot of reports on here about plenty of successful travel. Celiac...
  11. It seems like there are two issues here: 1) the emotional/psychological challenge of what it takes to eat gluten-free in a gluten-eating culture 2) you still don't feel well Starting with 2)... Are you completely gluten free? If not, that's probably why (but that's also something you already know). If you think you are, it's worth double checking...
  12. Welcome to the board. I'm sorry your diagnosis came so suddenly and unexpectedly, but glad that you know what the problem is. I know that it seems overwhelming, daunting, confusing as all heck, and probably more than a little aggravating right now, but the diet will get easier. Not in a week, and maybe not in a month, but with practice. One...
  13. there aren't any dairy products that contain casein and *no* lactose. the best way to test is to take something low lactose - cheese or yogurt, for instance - and eat it with lactaid (over the counter lactase enzyme), and see how you do (that's testing for casein, as you're using the enzyme to digest the lactose). then have some milk (something HIGH in...
  14. /angry face at the food industry! You don't need grains to get fiber. Beans, vegetables, and fruits can *easily* get you *plenty* of fiber. If you want more than 25-30g per day, you'll want to actually choose what you're eating, but other than that, if you're eating a well-rounded diet with 5-7 servings of fruits and vegetables a day, and grains/legumes...
  15. LOTS of options in Seattle, and a couple in Issaquah. I'm not in Lynnwood or Puyallup enough to know off hand. Mona's is in Woodinville, just south of Lynnwood. DaVinci's is in Seattle, but their website is down, so I don't know what's up with that. Sunny Valley is in Maple Valley - not terribly convenient, but a 20-30 minute drive from Seattle. There...
  16. Definitely get checked. This is one of those things that docs have always told me - don't say "oh, it's only a little", come in and get checked out. don't mess with it.
  17. I was re-reading, and I think I already responded, but I was struck by your wording: "My husband has made it clear he will not be embarrased by my new allergy so he told me just to eat from now on before we go out." Maybe your subconscious already knows this - "he will not be embarassed". It's his choice how he reacts to you asking about things...
  18. That can be one manifestation of restless leg syndrome. If it's caused by low iron (either circulating iron, or iron stores), which celiac disease can cause, then yes, there can be a connection.
  19. I am not certain from your post if you're young enough to be living at home *and* dependent upon your mom to cook. If not, then it doesn't really matter if they believe you or understand you. What goes in your mouth is your choice. That's a good thing and a bad thing. It means we do have the option to choose to eat things that make us sick. But...
  20. She should ask to be tested by her provider for vitamin levels, because it *really* depends on what her body has been able to absorb. As a safe start, I'd go with a Calcium/Magnesium supplement (a 2:1 Ca to Mg ratio), and a VitD supplement. Fabulous for bone health and supporting the immune system (but not *stimulating* it, like some herbals can do -...
  21. borborygmi is the technical term (at least it has an amusing name, right?) and it's a classic sign of celiac, and a number of other digestive issues. anything that produces gas has a chance of doing it (because you're hearing the intestines move things around; if there's gas, there's more room for stuff to move). if you're still getting it gluten free...
  22. While I prefer to get my vitamins from my diet, not only is our soil not that nutritive for loading our plants with vitamins these days, if you don't eat a whole lot of calories (1600-1700 is enough for me to maintain a healthy weight) it can be hard to get what you need sometimes. Particularly if your body is experiencing some variety of stress, through...
  23. On the toothpaste front: As far as I can gather from my experiences w/ Sensodyne, calling them, and what people have posted here, they *used* to use an ingredient that could contain gluten. Not a CYA statement, but rather a rotating, "where can we get this cheapest" ingredient that meant the produce really did have *trace* amounts of gluten in it from...
  24. I also use the deodorant crystal. Not an antipersperant (but sweat is a good thing, honestly), but forms a barrier that prevents the bacteria which cause BO from growing in any quantity for about 24 hours. Works great for me. (You do have to wet the stick or skin before applying it.)
  25. it looks like everything you're eating is processed/packaged. if you're getting even tiny amounts of contamination from each of them, it's going to add up. (not to mention the less than stellar nutrition to support healing.) I know it's a pain in the rear, but try to eat unprocessed foods (fruits/veggies/meats/rice(gluten-free grains)/nuts/dairy if you...
