  1. What does your diet generally look like?
  2. Take a look at Open Original Shared Link. It's really not hard to get 25-30g of fiber per day out of 1600-2000 calories per day. Have a cup of cooked lentils - there's half your day's requirement. Most other beans are a third. Have a cup of berries - there's a quarter of your day's requirement. Same with a cup of cooked spinach or a cup of pumpkin...
  3. I definitely don't mean to turn you off to asking questions. There are no truly silly questions, if you don't know the answer; "silliness" is all a matter of perspective. I just wanted to point out why it seems like an odd question to 'the diet veterans'. (And, of course, tone never comes across well in text. ) I don't have any particularly helpful...
  4. A lot of it is just about learning your city. Yeah, some places are harder than others, but anywhere new is hard. I read Portland was rated one of the best (and heavens knows that when I visit, it is fairly easy). (Not that you'll get a pretzel there... the pacnorthwest isn't big pretzel country. ) The Seattle area is fairly easy to. So was Huntington...
  5. Good job for not giving in, particularly during a tough time!
  6. If you're still using your old toaster, you are getting contaminated. If you're still using old cast iron, you are getting contaminated. If you are eating out, REGARDLESS of the assurances they give you, if the whole restaurant isn't gluten free, you run the risk of getting contaminated. (I'm not saying don't eat out, I'm saying 'know your risks'.) Also...
  7. It'd probably be hard to get many people to tell you their personal experience with it - because we're gluten free, and it's not. It's like asking "so, how do you guys react to shredded wheat cereal?" "Sprouted" grains use grain seeds that have started to germinate. The grain seed stores, amongst other things, gluten as a source of protein needed...
  8. You might try figuring out *WHAT* you think is bad about them. My husband isn't a big veggie fan either, but after a long time of working on understanding it (between his knowledge about what things taste like to him and my knowledge about cooking and chemistry of cooking), we figured out that he's a super taster. Raw broccoli is FAR too bitter to even...
  9. My friends and family and I who have all lived in LA say the same thing: LA is a hard place to make real connections. Lots of superficial acquaintance-ships, but not real connections. As you say, people are always rushing around to one thing or another. It's not impossible, but you have to find the right group that you can fit in with, and the right people...
  10. Definitely a personal choice. This isn't one that we can tell you "the right answer", but rather one you have to figure out for yourself. For the vast majority of items, I am fine with "produced in a facility that also processes wheat..." That statement does not mean shared lines, just a shared building. If you ever have had bread in your house, your...
  11. when you have so many allergies, you eat what you can, even when that's five foods. you stay strictly gluten free, if you're trying that route, to see if shutting down that faulty immune system reaction will help reduce your allergies. and you explore new foods. are you allergic to meats? if not, why isn't chicken, beef, pork, or turkey on your list...
  12. None of us can come over there and provide you with better food. you have to really and truly fully own that ONLY YOU can change your diet, with each and every decision you make on what food you buy and what food you put in your mouth. Yeah, yeah, that might sound dumb, but I don't know "you should know this" on an intellectual level - we all do. I mean...
  13. lol, Peter, I love your response. So true. Nicole, however, is new, so I assume that she has not seen our endless debates and threads on testing foods for gluten, and is not familiar with the issue. So, Nicole, I do hope you read what Peter wrote as he intended it, and not with a tone of snark. He's right - it is not possible to test for nothing...
  14. While yes, I will first say - are you sure that what is best for *YOU* is to continue being vegan? Can you find a middle ground with vegetarianism (even if it's just consciously raised eggs), or incorporating wild-caught fish? I do understand ethical reasons to be vegan, but if one of them is non-violence, you have to consider violence to your body (by...
  15. fiore, re-reading one of your posts, about thinking other things might help if you could reduce the inflammation, makes me suspect that trying an antihistamine *would reduce the inflammation*. Histamine production is almost always a part of the inflammatory process, and it can get trapped in a cycle of constant production. You might give it a try for two...
  16. Once or twice a year, usually from contamination at a restaurant (though I got out to eat more like once a month).
  17. You clearly need a better quinoa recipe!
  18. I've had no issues with SlowFe. It's a fairly high dose, but if you're trying to boost iron stores, that may be appropriate. (Do check with your doctor on that one, of course.)
  19. I go to a local asian food store. These days, the ingredients generally are printed in english on a separate label added to the packaging. I've not had a problem finding one that says "rice flour, water".
  20. I can relate, but in this story, I'm your husband. My first suggestion: couples sex counseling. I went for three years, and it was a lot of work (mental), but things are doing better - not great, just better. My second suggestion: read all you can about chronic pain. Honestly, his reaction does *not* sound abnormal, and has nothing whatsoever to do...
  21. I am light sensitive, but I suspect it's related to me having fibro, as that is a central nervous system sensitization thing. I'm also sound sensitive. I'm not always equally sensitive to these things, but it can be pretty annoying sometimes. Stress levels affect it for me, and I try to do my best about moderating light levels - introduce myself to brightness...
  22. No worries about 'intrusive'. I'd rather talk openly about this to encourage women to not keep silent. I used topical estrogen (just on the vulva) every day for ... oh, months. A couple times a week as maintenance after that. It was estrace, but I know some women are bothered by the propylene glycol in it, and have to have in specially compounded...
  23. I would suggest getting a neti pot and make your own salt water. Nasal irrigation is more effective than just a spray, and making your own (I like to use half baking soda, half salt due to the different properties of the two) keeps the cross-contamination out of it.
  24. Did she not say *why* you should eat more protein? I would call her back and ask her if she didn't give you any explanation. If I had to guess, I'd say she suspected hypoglycemia, but I'd ask, because "eat more protein" is one of the standard pieces of advice, and is true, but I find is too simplistic for good implementation.
