ARCHIVED Wow... If I Wasn't Already Convinced...
tarnalberry replied to boysmom's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
fyi, most caramel coloring in the US is gluten free (made from corn, iirc). and the vast majority of balsamic vinegar is naturally gluten free (made from grapes) - only a few cheap brands add anything to it. as for the constipation - reducing simple starches, increasing things like beans/lentils/veggies/flax meal, and making sure that you're getting enough... -
No matter the loss, even if it's "just" your way of eating, it's a loss. You have to grieve it in some fashion, and depression is a fairly normal part of grieving. Your feelings are your feelings, and there's nothing wrong with having feelings, it's just what you do with them. So, re-read fluffy's advice (pretty much what I would have said), and start...

ARCHIVED Protein... And Beef Jerky
tarnalberry replied to LadyBugLuv's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
You can make your own, but you'll have to get creative. The soy sauce is there as a preservative for the meat - because it has a lot of salt. So substitute salt when making yours. You'll need something else for the liquid, and you can use water, or maybe even something like pineapple juice (though, with a juice, I'd keep it stored in the fridge, while... -
ARCHIVED Periods Off Diet Do They Really Have An Impact?
tarnalberry replied to UnhappyCoeliac's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Yup, your chances of intestinal cancers, blood cancers (e.g. lymphoma), and nutritional deficiencies (e.g. aenemia and osteoporosis), and developing other auto-immune conditions (like type 1 diabetes), all go up. In some cases, significantly. It's absolutely your choice, but no matter how careful you are, there is a risk of contamination and microscopic... -
As far as I understand it, it's not one or the other. For some people, it is a trigger. For some people, it's "asymptomatic" until they cross a threshold. And for some, it's both! (A trigger a long time ago starts a slow process.) As environmental factors can literally turn some genes on and off, I quite do fully believe that there is a trigger, a light...

ARCHIVED Dx 3 Years Ago
tarnalberry replied to LoveIsntMade's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
If you look up the NIH's conference on celiac disease, and read their material, you'll find that even medical studies have shown that rather a lot of people are asymptomatic celiacs. Well, asymptomatic in that they don't think anything is wrong, but not asymptomatic if you kept them eating gluten for their life - significant internal damage is done. There... -
ARCHIVED Need Advice...long
tarnalberry replied to Suprmom's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
if you need an official dx, you'll need to go back on gluten for at least 6 weeks. (plenty of gluten, not just a little bit.) but there are reasons (insurance wise) that you might not want an official dx. It sounds more like you just need confidence in your own conclusions. Well, build that confidence, then, don't eat gluten! Remember that your anecdotal... -
I haven't gotten to do much but demo someone's. They yoga program isn't great, but isn't the end of the world. What I like about it is using it to improve proprioception and balance. I don't know how well, in practice, the games really give you feedback about this, but it has potential.

LOTS of 'em. Search for seattle in the search box above and you'll find a lot of posts that cover the area. Most of them aren't chains, but we've got most of the chains that have gluten-free menus as well.

Kelso? Seriously?! Wow. That is not where I would expect to find gluten free pizza. The next time I'm on my way home from a Mt. St. Helens climb, however, I just might be having pizza! Thanks for sharing!

ARCHIVED Now Something Else To Worry About
tarnalberry replied to jasonD2's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
sounds like a canker sore. fairly common in the population - celiac or not. rinse with salt water a couple of times a day until it goes away. (of course, if it doesn't go away, you want to look into it!) they can be exacerbated by stress - any variety of stress on the body, be it emotional (crazy day), physical (surgery/accident), or chemical (allergen... -

I think it really depends on where the restaurant draws the line. If it's "here's this menu, that's all we're doing"... well, yeah, I'd rather them withdraw the menu. If the staff isn't trained, the menu is kind of worthless to me. I'm just jumping blindly off something I can't see. If it's "here's the menu, we've trained the staff what this is...

ARCHIVED Celiac And Vulvodynia And Vaginal Issues
tarnalberry replied to fiore's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Don't worry about bugging me at all! It's so hard to do this sort of thing over posts. I found out I was Celiac after I developed VVS. I was on a Yahoo Group (either Open Original Shared Link or one that isn't on Yahoo anymore in any similar manifestation to what it was at the time), and there was a woman on there who was quite insistent that none... -
Given your age and your recent diagnosis, while your doctor sounds a bit uneducated and lazy (nearly 1200 hits on Open Original Shared Link), his advice sounds... in the right direction. I wouldn't stick with *just* a multi-vitamin. Many of those don't even have a full day's supply of calcium, let alone a decent Ca/VitD/Mg ratio. I would make sure...

ARCHIVED Celiac And Vulvodynia And Vaginal Issues
tarnalberry replied to fiore's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
I can't emphasize enough how the antihistamine was only *part* of the process. If the antihistamine helps reduce the histamine in the skin, you still need something (like a topical estrogen of some variety, even if compounded specifically for you) to help rebuild collagen in the tissues, and you still need to make sure to reduce the creation of new histamine... -
ARCHIVED I Was So Hungry And Afraid I Am Really Sad Right Now
tarnalberry replied to Cinnamon7778's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Yup, I would have been starving about two to three hours after eating something like that. HUGE blood sugar crash in the making if you're in the least bit sensitive to these things. Try making sure that EACH meal you have - and you may need to eat multiple, small meals - is balanced for protein, fiber, fat, and complex carbs. (That means that something... -
Congrats! I'll share what I learned that's relevant at a recent training session: * Get enough iron and enough protein. Really get enough protein. Your blood volume will increase by at least 100% in the next three months - you need protein to do that. Getting enough protein and iron can help reduce the risk of pre-eclampsia. * From what I gathered...

ARCHIVED What Happenes When You Are "glutened"?
tarnalberry replied to SLB5757's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
My symptoms last 4-7 days. The chemical reaction going on in the gut can self-sustain itself for up to 2 weeks. You are definitely not alone on this one; two days in no way abnormally long. -
ARCHIVED Looking For Good Places To Eat In Oregon

You might find this list of Open Original Shared Link useful. I happen to particularly like Vita Cafe. (It's quite popular!) -
ARCHIVED I Hate Vegetables
tarnalberry replied to lpellegr's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
What I've learned from my husband is this: start with the vegetables you know you like (not just can get down your gullet, but can say "I can find that pleasing") and start with the textures you know you like, and try to get really really creative. Don't worry if you're only eating seven vegetables for now; figure out how to add the 8th one without eating... -
Yup, Rachelle's got the thread of my thinking. If you're eating a steamed or grilled chicken breast and a big 'ol heap of steamed/lightly sauteed/baked/etc veggies for dinner (and that's it), chances are, you've got very little fat in that meal. Or if your muffins are low in fat (they're almost certainly low in protein - unless you are specifically making...

2 things: viral things can easily last three weeks - or four or five or six or seven... they can get tough to shake off, leaving you just feeling tired and under the weather, but not actively sick. and, is there enough fat in your diet? I see meat and veggies... but a balance of all three macronutrients - fat, protein, and complex carbs - is needed for...

ARCHIVED Celiac And Vulvodynia And Vaginal Issues
tarnalberry replied to fiore's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
due to the drowsiness it causes, I started with 10mg/day, and worked up to... 50mg/day at my highest doseage. maintenance is more like 20mg/day, and that was only for months I need it.
