  1. my blood iron levels are normal, but my stores are borderline low. (how low, I don't recall any numbers.) my rheumatologist suspected that it was contributing to my restless leg syndrome, so I've been taking SlowFe twice a day for the past three weeks. a little less restless leg, and a little more energy.
  2. Only? Not necessarily, but I'd suggest that you not behold yourself to veganism at the expense of figuring out your health. As lonewolf says, perhaps try starting with eggs and dairy. See if that works. Look into a wider range of food sources (hemp milk/seeds, flax seeds, nuts, etc.). Scour vegetarian websites and recipe books and get creative to figure...
  3. If nothing has changed in your diet, you might consider going to the doc to get it checked out. Left side abdominal pain is why they stuck me in a CT.
  4. They use barley enzymes to filter the rice. In theory, low enough levels of gluten for them to claim gluten free (<20ppm), but most of us are kinda pissed at them for the lack of disclosure so we can't even make our own informed decision.
  5. If you're hypoglycemic, and eating a lot of potatoes and fruits, and no meats (and I didn't see mention of nuts in there).... well, you might want to reconsider eating meat. Eating a little throughout the day, if it's stuff that *YOUR* hypoglycemia reacts quickly to, will have you going up and down all day, never feeling good. Being gluten and dairy free...
  6. yup, meat, veggies, fruits, nuts... that's rather a lot of food, actually. the whole meat selection, the whole produce area of the grocery store, and - depending on where you shop - you can get soy/coconut/nut/rice based dairy alternatives if you choose to use them. I think one of the things that makes us feel that our choices are limited is that we...
  7. I'm being laid off from my job June 19th, and I've love to cheat, but I've got some hiking I'd like to do, and the physical effects of gluten (even if mine aren't bad) are not appropriate when you have to bury your waste (or cart it out in blue bags!), and pack out your toilet paper! /eww!
  8. I don't right now, but have at times (sometimes for a number of months in a row). My average would vary. Around 1800, but the variance was significant, and that's why I tracked. It helped me keep track of when I was creeping up too high out of habit, or late eating (one thing that gets me eating too much), or if it got too low, out of habit as well....
  9. It's been a real learning experience for me! I totally though "oh, it's a puppy, they'll be fine regardless of what they do." HAH! The best recommendation I can give is to find a *GOOD* training center, and get in with the best teachers there. They'll know good vets, recognize good gaiting, helping with problem behaviors. And if you're really happy...
  10. It's REALLY important until the growth plates close. (Depending on the dog, that's between 12 and 24 months - the larger the dog, the longer until the growth plates close. I have a standard poodle, who'll be around 55-60lbs, and ~23-24" at the shoulders, and he'll probably finish fusing growth plates at somewhere between 20 and 24 months of age. I won't...
  11. A Post on the Very Topic! Congratulations on the new puppy! (BTW, I learned this the hard way, if he is one of the medium to larger breeds (say, expected to reach 40lbs or more), do *NOT* let him go bounding down stairs. Or, jumping off anything tall-ish (like jumping out of the car - lift or use a ramp). Or excessive ball/frisbee chasing where...
  12. From everything I've read about the chemistry of all this, my answer is: The serum tests are more precise. (Pieces of data do not vary signifcantly, and cluster around a point that may not be spot on the "answer".) The elimination diet (done properly) is more accurate. (Pieces of data vary more significantly, but do cluster spot on the "answer".) If...
  13. Unless it's someone I've trained, I get the chance to peruse the ingredients (and labels), and watch the prep, yeah, I usually say no. (Ok, if the host puts out a bag of tostitos and a jar of tostitos salsa, I know those are gluten free. ) Pretty much, assume things are unsafe until PROVEN otherwise. (Not suspected, but PROVEN.) That's one good reason...
  14. 3 things: 0) Not everyone reads every thread, so don't be surprised that each person who replies doesn't know everything you've typed here. You can always post a hyperlink back to another post, rather than retyping. 1) chronic illness can most distinctly cause depression. It's situational, it's annoying as all you-know-what. But you can do...
  15. Lentil Vegetable Soup Serves 4-5 (as a main dish) Prep time: ~15 min Cook time: ~30 min Ingredients ----------- 1/2 cup lentils 3 yukon gold potatoes (or any creamer potato) 1 onion 3 carrots 1 bunch chard 1 can diced tomatoes (or four diced roma tomatoes) 1 bouillion cube (optional) 2-3 tbsp olive oil 1/4 tsp corriander 1/2 tsp sage ...
  16. I would just say "It's her choice to eat something that makes her sick, just like it's my choice to not eat something that makes me sick. Please respect MY CHOICE." She doesn't have to understand, agree, or believe. She just has to respect your decision.
  17. May I suggest you also look into a raw diet for your cat? Biologically, cats are obligate carnivores, and there are a number of excellent raw food diets available frozen that meet this need.
  18. My docs have told me the same thing, IF the "stomach flu" lasts approximately 24-72 hours and tends to be fairly intense, and is confined to *just* the intestinal symptoms and fever. (The symptoms of the actual flu are fairly different.) What gets tricky is that viral gastroenteritis and bacterial infections with similar symptoms are - well, similar....
  19. they're probably trying to not leave you out, and your food might look really good! reminds me of this weekend - I made breakfast (eight strawberries and two bananas, chopped up, a handful of chopped pecans, handful of chopped walnuts, and a bit of shredded coconut. all topped with hemp milk. quite tasty. my husband - in a friendly tease, not mean...
  20. I don't think it's the diet that's limiting you guys - it's your imaginations. Go to the bookstore or the library or the internet, and get some recipes! Find ones that might only need a few modifications (maybe some simple ones at first, but try to be creative with modifications as well), and *practice* creativity. The more you practice it, the easier...
  21. Fortunately, regardless of the test results, the treatment is entirely under your control, and requires absolutely no input from your doctor.
  22. I use earth balance if I ever bother with toast or make muffins. As far dairy - in cereal, I use either soy milk (different brands taste differently, I prefer unsweetened silk) or almond milk (also unsweetened) if I'm doing cereal, and almond rice milk or hemp milk in a smoothie or when baking. (Almond milk if I'm making chai tea.)
  23. I would let it go. You can't change anyone but yourself, and what she does in her apartment doesn't really affect yours. Your decisions are still your own, and it's only your choice to get upset. I know it's hard, as I've been in mildly similar situations, but it's the only thing you can do.
  24. I'll tell you what I did in this situation - I had inconclusive blood tests because I went gluten free too early (but not a long time before the blood tests). I did not pursue any further testing past the dietary challenge, because it's not worth the time/money (opportunity cost of what you'll miss while you're "sick")/misery to me. So, I assume that I...
  25. Wow... I'd ask your family one question "Do you care more about my health, or what other people think of you? Because your responses to me suggest a very obvious answer to that question, and it's not making me feel very good." I'm very sorry you're going through that!
