  1. I completely understand. It's so hard at first, but I agree with everyone else. You just have to keep on explaining and explaining. YOU CAN'T HELP IT!! Keep telling your friend that and make her feel at ease. Eventually she'll understand. I find that when that happens I just eat an energy bar at the table or some crackers that I've brought. That seems...
  2. OH PLEASE find that article!! We went to Italy last summer and I gorged on pasta and beer and pizza. Of course, the whole time I thought my symptoms were because I never really at all that stuff that much. We are maybe going back this summer. I know Italy is gluten friendly for sure, but would love to read the article!
  3. I literally treat gluten like poison because that's what it is. For me there is no "tolerance" or cheating. Heck, even if we get a little bit and don't have a horrible reaction, it's still in there destroying villi and causing who knows what kinds of problems. I sure wouldn't join that study. NO WAY!!!
  4. SO glad you've decided to go!!
  5. The first few weeks are rough and sometimes just knowing you can't have something makes it even worse. It's like our inner teenager SCREAMING!!! Good luck to you and you're awesome for being so supportive!
  6. Chex cereals are all gluten-free , except the yucky wheat flavor. OK, this cracked me up with the "yucky wheat flavor." I loved that part the best in the Chex Mix. Oh man I would pick it out and slurp it all up! The funniest thing is that for years and years I thought the reason I had "gastrointestinal problems" when I ate all of this was simply because...
  7. I take Synthroid and keep reading that the jury is still out on my dosage and whether or not it contains gluten. I tried the generic and it just didn't work as well as far as symptoms. I think the Synthroid is ok because I'm super sensitive and when I eat well, my medication doesn't bother me. You know - the more I read this forum, the more my mouth drops...
  8. OH MY!! I keep a detailed food journal and have dumb symbols for all this "stuff," so it's hilarious to me that there's an app!!! The things we talk about...
  9. Welcome! I say that like an old pro when I was just officially diagnosed 11/13! Yes, let us know how your blood work goes. I go back in April for my follow-up and am hoping for some good stuff! Keep up the good work!
  10. Yes! I sautéed about half of a huge onion in a little butter with a little salt. While that was going I took a package of boneless, skinless breasts and boneless skinless thighs (I guess you could do all breasts but my family is split as far as white/dark and I think breasts need a little fat) and coated them in a little garlic olive oil then dusted them ...
  11. I remember it was about five days after no gluten when I realized I was still awake at ten pm. I'd started taking more probiotics, good vitamin, sublingual B12 and more calcium. After that it was day to day just better and better. I've glutened myself a few times - all out to eat. I can't stress enough how much that's just not an option most nights. We never...
  12. I'm so sorry you're frustrated and you have my complete empathy. I remember when the doctor called me with the diagnosis, I felt stuck inside a whirlwind. On the one hand I knew what he was going to say, but hearing it from him was a different story. And the next day was Thanksgiving. I remember feeling so overwhelmed that I couldn't even figure out how to...
  13. That's what I thought. Even chips fried in the same oil as onion rings and the like or just taking the bread off the patty. I would throw a fit that it was there in the first place. I just don't get it. Thanks for all of your comments. I KNEW IT!!!
  14. I mentioned this as a reply on another topic but thought I'd ask it as a separate question. I keep reading that some celiacs are super sensitive to gluten while others seem to "tolerate" it a little better. If celiac is a confirmed DX with blood/biopsies, wouldn't even a little gluten damage the villi even if it doesn't cause symptoms? Can some celiacs...
  15. I won't drink it either. "They" can't remove enough for me. I'm slowly learning to drink beers made from other grains. After a lifetime of wheat/barley beers, it's definitely a slow process!
  16. About a year before my DX, the dental hygienist made several comments about how my gums had receded and were in very bad shape all of the sudden. She said if she didn't know better that she would think I were malnourished. Also, for a couple of years before that, my teeth simply weren't as white anymore. I attributed it all to coffee and red wine and promptly...
  17. I've never even thought of this. Wow. Talk about a lightbulb. I keep a food journal and keep coming back to my favorite guilty pleasure - jalapeño kettle chips - making me sick. I must've read the ingredients a million times. Maybe even a million and a half. I love this site! And as far as your exhaustion goes, I wish I had a great answer. I'm two ...
  18. SO SO HAPPY FOR YOU!!!! I'm hoping for the same!!!
  19. This is an interesting question. I get so very sick and have to stay in bed the entire next day and then am tired and foggy headed for two more. Sometimes I think I am *too* careful but then I remember how horrible it is when I let my guard down. I can look back at my old food journal and am amazed at the symptoms I had that i had no idea were gluten...
  20. I asked during Christmas if the sugar-free mocha at Starbucks was gluten free and the cashier said she thought so but she'd ask. Just so happens the barista she asked just happened to have celiac and told me that she actually called corporate and couldn't get a straight answer so she suggested that I avoid it. I just always end up with a plain black coffee...
  21. I write in Sharpie "do not double dip" on jars and another sign I taped on the gluten bread that says WATCH YOUR CRUMBS. I yell like a crazy person if I find a stray ramen noodle too!!! I ended up reasoning my iron and bought new saucepans and all the "stuff" for the kitchen. I hope you find the cause and that your son gets better and stays better. ...
  22. That's interesting! I find that I can't drink much anyway since being sick as alcohol acts like a knock-out drug these days… Oh well! Water is much healthier anyway!
  23. ME TOO!!! ME TOO!!! Your post made me grin ear to ear for us both!! HUGE congrats!!! It's the simple things….
  24. Follow up... PF Changs emailed me the nicest email and were concerned about the soy sauce in the black ramekin. They also mailed me a generous gift card, which I told them in my initial conversation was completely unnecessary, as I knew I would eat there again. I emailed them back the server's name and the receipt number which showed the gluten-free meals...
  25. I should've said soy sauce in the rice. Sorry!
