  1. Mike, are you seriously saying that the gluten-free diet is the equivalent of a placebo? Do you realize how ridiculous this claim is? I've been ill all of my life. After I changed my diet drastically, I am finally getting some relief and I am healing. BUT if I inadvertently get gluten in my diet (not purposely), I find out by getting sick. Meaning, I don...
  2. It's hard when you didn't suspect it. But I agree with Carla, you will likely feel much better without gluten.
  3. The problem with gluten is, that a little will damage the body as much as a lot. So, if they'll have withdrawal symptoms, they'd still have them when you run out of that last bit of gluteny food you have. Meaning, you might as well just quit cold turkey and get it over with. Carla has given you good advice on distracting them. Of course, either way, they...
  4. Hi, and welcome to this board. My doctor tested me for everything but celiac disease, because I was gaining instead of losing weight, too. Now I know that possibly 50% of people with celiac disease have unexplained weight GAIN not loss as a symptom! I started seeing a naturopathic doctor a couple of weeks ago. When I told him everything that happened...
  5. My mother used sago quite a lot, as kids we called it 'fish eyes' Germans like it, apparently (I guess I am too weird to be your regular German ).
  6. Unfortunately, after a slipup it can take two weeks or more to feel better. And since you were still recovering after only being gluten-free for less than three months, it may take longer. Anyway, the good thing is, that now you can be sure gluten is the problem, you had quite the reaction from just two bites!
  7. Hi Sketch, and welcome to this board. Your story sure sounds familiar. Gerd is a very common symptom of celiac disease. Your Gerd diet may actually be what keeps you sick. Wouldn't that be ironic! I hope that those scheduled tests will finally give you some answers. If the biopsy is negative, I also agree that trying the gluten-free diet would be a good...
  8. What caused my joint pains was lectins (which includes gluten). I suggest you follow the lectins link in my signature, and eliminate all lectins for now, to see if your joint pain won't improve. Thanks, Matilda. I think grains are the highest in lectins. Gluten containing grains, rice and eggs cause the worst joint pains (and the worst gastro reactions...
  9. This is my personal opinion. It sounds like you might be casein intolerant, rather than lactose intolerant. If I am right, you will never outgrow it, and should stay away from dairy for life. But you may want to try goat's milk (and goat's cheese). It is very low in casein and is supposed to be much better tolerated than cow's milk. As to the gluten...
  10. Why don't you just add some fat to your son's food? Even if you just add some coconut oil to a jar while heating it. Also, do you have a blender? Just throw whatever you eat into the blender. That way he eats what you have, without the expense of the food in the jar. Plus, fresh is better, anyway. And I agree with Carla. Cow's milk has been proven...
  11. I am sorry, Amber. I didn't realize you were only 14 (the same age as my youngest daughter, Susie). I really feel for you. And of course you're right, the biopsy will undoubtedly be negative. Can't you show your mother this thread, so she understands that they are making you ill for nothing, that it will be completely useless? Your mother and your doctor...
  12. Katherine, have you tried biking? I have terrible foot problems too (which include bone spurs), but biking is okay (you don't use your heels for that at all).
  13. That's also a valid thought, I hadn't even thought of that.
  14. Amber, unless you eat gluten for at least six months to a year, your biopsy will likely be a false negative, even if you have celiac disease. Katherine is right, gluten-ease is an enzyme that is supposed to PREVENT the damage to the intestine (if it works), and would be counterproductive to purposely damaging your villi as much as possible for the biopsy...
  15. Just go to the store and copy their 1-800 number from their product (without buying it) to call them from home. Or if you have a cellphone, call them right there from the store, so you can buy it if they tell you it is gluten-free.
  16. Julie, why don't you try something natural first, like chamomile tea, or valerian root (try googling for 'natural sleep-aids')? They might just do the trick, and won't have any side effects. The problem with prescription sleeping pills is, that they suppress the dreaming phase (rem), which will have negative effects. Plus, they are addictive, too. Also...
  17. Several things come to mind. Obviously he is eating something he can't tolerate, his diarrhea is the evidence for that. Milk likely is part of the problem, as he got worse a while after it was reintroduced. That he didn't get worse immediately doesn't rule it out. He sure sounds like celiac disease, or at the least, gluten intolerance, could be the main...
  18. Do you have a bicycle? Biking will use your knees, but you don't put too much stress on them, and your legs won't have to bear much weight. It is definitely gentle on your knees. What about walking? Are you able to walk? I've read in different places that walking at a slow pace is more beneficial, and will help you lose weight faster if you're overweight...
  19. Toni, from what you said I was afraid that you'd just settle with a fibro diagnosis and treat those symptoms. I am glad I misunderstood you there. Mind you, I also felt vindicated when I got the fibro diagnosis. At least a doctor confirmed that something was wrong with me, and it wasn't 'all in my head', as I had been told many times previously. On the...
  20. Well, no, I don't believe D can be caused by pms or having your period. Bad pms can be caused by the same problems that can cause D, though.
  21. Hi Melissa, and welcome to this board. I am glad you finally know what's wrong with little Katharine. She was probably such a picky eater, because eating caused a tummy ache. When she realizes that food no longer hurts her tummy, she'll likely eat better. Please be aware that she appears to be addicted to gluten and dairy, and may experience withdrawal...
  22. Yes, it appears it stands for dear husband (but could also mean dermatitis herpetiformis ), dear daughter, dear son apparently. I don't use those, because personally, I don't like it. But it's easier and faster I guess.
  23. Really, olive oil should be safe. It must have been something else.
  24. Congratulations, you're amazing!
  25. Ouch, those scores are high for such a little guy! Good thing he doesn't seem to have malabsorption yet. He is so little, he'll soon forget about the gluteny things he used to have. Make sure he gets lots of healthy snacks, with the occasional treat. As long as he isn't hungry, he won't care about wanting things with gluten! Don't feel bad, you did the right...
