ARCHIVED I Am Overweight With celiac disease
Ursa Major replied to l-lyn01's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Okay, I do agree that there were some misunderstandings, but I still disagree on a few things. I agree that when I say portion control is not needed, I was thinking of normal, sensible portions, rather than stuffing yourself to the limit. I was thinking of some diets, were you're supposed to eat bird-size portions, which is ridiculous. I meant to do what... -
ARCHIVED I Am Overweight With celiac disease
Ursa Major replied to l-lyn01's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Carol, I disagree with the exercise regimen you propose. It has been shown that you can way overdo exercise, and make it unhealthy in the process. 30-45 minutes of vigorous arobic activity six times a week, PLUS weight bearing exercise is way over the top. A healthier way of doing it is to alternate the arobic and weight bearing exercise, as your muscles... -
I believe tofu is fermented, but soy milk is simply made from waste from making other things and made to taste nice. It's terrible for anybody.

Maggie, I used to have the same problem. I choked frequently, and after choking once, I'd choke several times more that day and had to be extremely careful. Since finding out what ALL my intolerances are, including gluten, I don't have that problem any more. I agree that you should probably have your esophagus checked. But it could also be other intolerances...

Ms. Sillyak, it is a myth that Asians eat a lot of soy products. They ONLY eat fermented soy (fermenting eliminates the poisons in soy), and only in fairly small amounts, as a condiment. The soy industry permeates that myth about Japanese being healthier because they eat a lot of soy, but it's a lie, to get us to buy their garbage. And a lot of soy producers...

ARCHIVED Furious!
Ursa Major replied to Kailynsmom's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Open Original Shared Link How Safe is Soy Infant Formula? By David Goodman New research suggests high concentrations of manganese found in soybean-based baby formula can lead to brain damage in infants and altered behaviors in adolescents. Dr. Francis Crinella, clinical professor of pediatrics at UC-Irvine, and Trinh Tran, a graduate researcher... -
ARCHIVED Furious!
Ursa Major replied to Kailynsmom's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Kailynsmom, children DO NOT need milk or a milk substitute (or formula) after they are weaned. That is a myth put out by the dairy industry. Soy formula is about the worst thing you can give any baby, it is very unhealthy and will cause health issues down the road. Unfortunately, most doctors don't have a clue about that. They also have bought into the nonsense... -
ARCHIVED Asthma
Ursa Major replied to slpinsd's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I've had asthma from the age of three, and probably had celiac symptoms before that (only nobody recognized them as such). I have severe allergies to tobacco smoke, cats, dogs, mold, dust and dust mites, which will all trigger an asthma attack if exposed to them (five minutes near my daughter's dog, and I'm sick for weeks, with smoke or cats my tolerance... -
ARCHIVED How Far Do I Need To Go?
Ursa Major replied to amandasMom's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Make sure the soap and shampoo she uses doesn't have wheat germ (or barley) in it, same goes for every other hair and beauty product. A new toaster is a must, as it is simply impossible to clean a toaster properly. You really want to get stainless steel pots and pans. Your dishes are fine. Wooden cutting boards are a problem, so are strainers. If you have... -
ARCHIVED I Am Overweight With celiac disease
Ursa Major replied to l-lyn01's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
You know, even though exercise is important, I haven't yet been well enough to exercise. Still, in the five months I've been gluten free I've lost 25 pounds without even trying. Mind you, I can really not tolerate ANY starches, including the ones that aren't grains. Starches are the enemy for me, and I rarely have any. Whenever I bake something and eat it... -
Hi Mary, I've read just recently (and actually, I've read it in several different places, as I do a lot of research) that women with HIGH cholesterol live much longer on average than women with low cholesterol. Lipitor is a terrible idea, as it has been linked to all kinds of problems, including heart attacks. And another thing, the cholesterol you ingest...

I now sort of think that mosquito bites in me might bring out the DH. The last one I got (in Mexico when on our cruise in January) turned into a patch of typical DH blisters, and I still have a large, bright red patch in that spot. Maybe the deposits under the skin we have (whatever they are called, I don't remember) cause that awful reaction? I also get...

ARCHIVED Buckwheat Flour....awful Stuff!
Ursa Major replied to mommyetb's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
I rarely bake, because all starches make me gain weight, (and I am intolerant to all grains), and give me gas. But when I use buckwheat flour (which you can get in dark or light, the light is a bit better) I always add tapioca flour, arrowroot flour, sometimes amaranth flour and ground hazelnuts (I only use it for pancakes and crumbs for apple crisp). I wouldn... -
Count me in on that. When my husband and I stand somewhere where there are mosquitoes, I'll say, "The mosquitoes are terrible, let's get out of here, I'm being eaten alive!" And he'll say, "What mosquitoes?" Because they all go for me and don't bother with him!
-
You're so right with that. I can only do it one day at a time, sometimes more like one hour or even one minute at a time when I am really feeling discouraged. If I look too far ahead, life gets way too daunting.

I am not sure this is accurate. My mother (not knowing any better) made me have lots of milk, to fatten me up (it achieved the opposite), and I didn't really even start to develop until the age of 18, even though I started my period at 10. My sister was fully developed by the time she was 12, but didn't get her period until 14. Weird. My youngest daughter...

ARCHIVED Nice Eyelashes!
Ursa Major replied to ThomasMom's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I always had long, thick eyelashes. But I've just noticed a couple of days ago, that suddenly my lashes are quite short! I always had trouble with my lashes hitting my glasses, but now I feel weird for having such short lashes. Very strange, I wonder why this is happening. I am just glad that my hair hasn't started falling out, too. I have very thick hair... -
I've been having a hard time lately, too. I found out I have Celiac disease at the age of 52. I LOVE rye bread! I'd eat it several times a day, with butter and cheese. I loved waffles with yogourt, too. I never liked cereal, though, good thing. And I always thought my chocolate chip cake was to die for (right, literally, I guess). My other favourite food...

ARCHIVED Got My Enterolab Results Back
Ursa Major replied to Clark Bent as Stupor-Man's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Well, now you know for sure, and can go on with your (gluten and casein free) life, without wondering if you need to restrict your diet. You also won't be as tempted to cheat when you know that you obviously have Celiac disease, and would cause yourself harm if you do. All the best, you'll be fine! -
ARCHIVED The Pros And Cons Of The Food Intolerance Testing
Ursa Major replied to Claire's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Very true, I do react badly to rice, and I believe to pork also. I have no idea which tests are accurate. Somehow what it says on this one does make sense. I was tested for allergies and intolerances before, but most of the worst ones never showed up, because they cause delayed reactions. My allergy test says that I am allergic to tobacco smoke, cats... -
ARCHIVED Please Help! What Does This Mean?
Ursa Major replied to Jocelyn357's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Well, from what I can see your values are extremely high, if you don't have celiac disease I'll eat my hat . It also looks like you're intolerant to casein, so shouldn't have any dairy products. I guess you need to be gluten and casein free for sure! Other people here are a lot more knowledgable than me, and will be able to explain things... -
ARCHIVED Gluten Free But Don't Have To Be?
Ursa Major replied to chrissy's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I also wasn't diagnosed by biopsy, or even blood tests. I've had aches all over all my life, even as a small child, was thin as a stick, with awful back aches and depression from the age of seven, alternating diarrhea and constipation. Then, when I was pregnant with my first daughter, I was starting to gain weight, and was gaining and gaining until last summer... -
Lollie, bleach won't do a thing to gluten, but might slowly poison you. It has been shown that its pretty much impossible to rinse all the bleach residue off dishes, other than rewashing them with soap and water. Bleach is also very hard on your skin. I know it is law to use bleach in your dishwater in settings like church, but why would you want to do it...
-
Wow, you were not told 18 years ago that the only treatment for DH is a gluten free diet, and that a positive biopsy for DH automatically gives you a diagnosis for Celiac? That's just terrible! But I am glad you figured it out.
