ARCHIVED Gas Prices---geez
Ursa Major replied to darlindeb25's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
Well, your suggestions are fine where there IS public transportation. Where I am there is not. I am out in the countryside, no bus, no train, no nothing. Without driving I'd be sitting in my house, not going anywhere. My husband does work from home two days a week. He takes his car south (a forty minute drive), where he parks it in the carpooling parking... -
ARCHIVED I Cannot Believe This
Ursa Major replied to holiday16's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I completely understand about APD, as I have the same problem. I have never been officially diagnosed with it, but the definition of it, and the symptoms stated fit me 100%. Plus, it isn't unusual to have it with Asperger Syndrome. It might be easier if you do all the measuring ahead of time, like the night before, or while your daughter is at school.... -
ARCHIVED Gas Prices---geez
Ursa Major replied to darlindeb25's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
I am not sure how this compares, but here in Canada the gas prices have been anywhere from $1.20 to $1.30 a liter lately. Up from about 85 cents just a few months ago. Meaning that I have to cut back on my trips to visit my grandchildren. Who tell me I don't see them often enough as it is. To go to visit my oldest daughter and her large family (a five... -
ARCHIVED Can You Be "intolerant" To Dairy Even If You Don't Have Any Gi Symptoms?
Ursa Major replied to CuriousOne's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Dairy can cause all kinds of symptoms, just like gluten. My youngest daughter and two of my granddaughters get awful eczema from it. One of my husband's cousins gets extreme depression if she eats dairy! I get gastro symptoms, that is so much easier to figure out, as that is what most people expect, and it is fairly obvious. -
ARCHIVED River Cruise Moscow To St. Petersburg
Ursa Major replied to rajawali's topic in Traveling with Celiac Disease
That sounds excellent, I am glad you had a good time without getting sick! And it is also so much more enjoyable if you get good food, too. -
Scott did say that he updated the forum software just recently, and wanted us to let him know if we experienced problems. The other day my edit buttons were gone, too. So, I guess I better let him know that it is still ongoing.

ARCHIVED I Cannot Believe This
Ursa Major replied to holiday16's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I understand your frustration! She knows that she can't have gluten, which makes it even more frustrating for you, especially because you can't stop her from cheating when she is at school. Making some really special things for her to take might be a good idea. Why don't you also let her help you bake some yummy cookies as well? If she feels that she has... -
ARCHIVED Pain In The Bottom Of My Feet- Owwww
Ursa Major replied to Ridgewalker's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
I had a problem quite similar to that for a while, and it was so bad that I would have ended up not being able to walk at all. When I got custom orthotics it really helped. My feet aren't 100% better, but most of the time about 90%. You may want to see an orthopedic surgeon, or a chiropractor (mine does custom orthotics) to have it checked out. -
ARCHIVED Stomach Pain
Ursa Major replied to sandersclan's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I find that when I get glutened (or egged or riced ) and get an awful stomach ache, I take a homeopathic remedy called sepia, which really helps with the pain. Young children can take those remedies, my daughter gives them even to kids under one. Another thing that calms the stomach is chamomile tea. Kids usually love it if you put a little honey or... -
ARCHIVED Soy Milk
Ursa Major replied to a topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I believe it sounds like oral allergy syndrome, and that you are allergic to soy. Why don't you try rice or almond milk with your cereal? They are both much healthier than soy, and hopefully won't trigger any allergies. -
ARCHIVED Is Anyone Now Raw And gluten-free?
Ursa Major replied to jhow32000's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
I also can't do raw food, as I react to a lot of raw food (possibly because it is much harder to digest, and I think I have permanent damage). And it is true, with the above mentioned vegetables (and it is likely the list is much longer) you get certain nutrients when you eat them raw, that are cooked away when you cook them, but you also 'unlock' some nutrients... -
ARCHIVED What's Up With My Kid.?
Ursa Major replied to missy'smom's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I have never heard that allergy shots will prevent people from developing asthma. This allergist seems to believe that everybody with environmental allergies will develop asthma unless they get his expensive allergy shots! Personally, I would question his motives in his recommendations. I start wheezing when I eat rice, eggs and gluten. Those foods somehow... -
ARCHIVED Found Out I Am Low On Iron - Questions?
Ursa Major replied to loraleena's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Actually, optimal is 110, not 50 to 70 (if we are on the same wavelength, and your labs normal range is the same as mine, being from 40 to 300). If there is no iron stored to begin with, you can have symptoms of severe anemia, and your hemoglobin will slowly go down to unacceptable levels. My ferritin (the stored iron) was only 4 a few years ago, and... -
ARCHIVED Drastic Measures
Ursa Major replied to shan's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I have tried mashed cauliflower instead of mashed potatoes. While I (who was a potato addict) thought it was okay (not fabulous, but okay), my husband really liked it. Even my picky teenager (who tends to be a picky eater) thought it was fine and actually ate it. -
Your doctor is an idiot. Positive blood work indicates villi damage. If you have been on a gluten-free diet, you will NOT have positive blood work after one week of gluten. The pins and needles indicate neurological damage from the gluten. It can also be caused by nutritional deficiencies due to malabsorption from villi damage. You would do well to...

ARCHIVED Testing
Ursa Major replied to wadaman's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
A positive biopsy is irrefutable proof of celiac disease, but a negative biopsy can absolutely NOT rule out celiac disease. If you show improvement on a gluten-free diet, that would, along with positive blood work, be absolute proof that you have celiac disease. -
ARCHIVED Can Celiac Bloodwork Change?
Ursa Major replied to momto1's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Obviously, your daughter has developed suspicious symptoms. Sharp stomach pains sure aren't normal! If her tests come back negative, I would have her tested with Open Original Shared Link, as their tests will detect antibodies BEFORE the villi are pretty much destroyed, while the blood tests are only accurate when there is lots of villi damage already. ... -
ARCHIVED Enterolab Results For My 3 Year Old- And Vent
Ursa Major replied to ItchyMeredith's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
His malabsorption score is really high. I would take him off gluten immediately before he develops other things besides celiac disease, like diabetes. Because he has been gluten light for so long, the likelihood of a biopsy being negative is extremely high, in fact, quite likely. Do you really want to keep feeding him food that is poison to him for a biopsy... -

ARCHIVED Conflicting Health Advice
Ursa Major replied to BRUMI1968's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Don't be sorry. We've all had our rants now and then, it helps to get it out. You are right, it is difficult to figure out what you should/shouldn't eat. I have come to the same conclusion, that eating the natural, old fashioned way is likely best. Milk used to be fine, before they pasteurized/homogenized it, and made it extremely unhealthy in the process... -
ARCHIVED Laboratory Results Interpretation - Question For Medical Professional
Ursa Major replied to smd818's topic in Doctors
Some things are definitely off. It appears that he has slight anemia at least, as well as growth failure. If the growth hormone hasn't helped him grow then he might as well not take it! Failure to grow and anemia are two of the most common symptoms of celiac disease in children. Plus, the celiac disease testing is extremely unreliable in young children... -
ARCHIVED Hypothyroidism Test Results
Ursa Major replied to Di-gfree's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
The problem is, that if you have adrenal fatigue, your thyroid meds will NOT work. If your adrenal fatigue isn't too bad, taking dessicated adrenal from the health food store may be enough. But it is more likely that you need to take hydrocortisone for at least the first while to allow the thyroid meds to start working. Normally you can wean off the HC after... -
ARCHIVED So Much For An Education..
Ursa Major replied to num1habsfan's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
I agree about going to your local newspaper with your story. A lot of people have been helped when stories like yours have been all over the news/newspapers, because it makes those people look bad, and it is then in their best interest to set things right to save face. Universities don't like bad publicity, especially when it comes to mistreating people with... -
ARCHIVED Hypothyroidism Test Results
Ursa Major replied to Di-gfree's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
There are others who would be able to answer those questions better than me. You may want to become a member at the stopthethyroidmadness site, and post your questions in the respective Hashimoto and adrenal forums. They are all very helpful there, and I don't know what I would have done without them. -
ARCHIVED 6-day Elimination Diet?
Ursa Major replied to scottyfeelsick's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
Yes, if you normally eat carrots every day it would be wise to eliminate them and test them as well. And no, you shouldn't eat new foods for three days. Because then, when you try a new food, you may misdiagnose a delayed reaction to one food, for an immediate reaction to the next one! You should eat lots of one food for a day, and then not eat it for...
