ARCHIVED Military Career Not Posisble With Careerillness
Ursa Major replied to Candy's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
But were you already in the military before you were diagnosed with celiac disease? Would they actually hire somebody who they know beforehand has it? That is what I was really thinking, that they wouldn't hire a known celiac. To fire somebody who is diagnosed while already in the military is a different story and in that case I can see your point. -
ARCHIVED Has Anyone Else Tried Humaworm?
Ursa Major replied to Nancym's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Tom, I know this is gross, but you don't see much unless you actually poke and pull apart your excrement. Because most of the time the parasites are hidden inside. Some sort of poke out, but most don't. I broke a wire hanger to use, and shine a flashlight as well as wearing my reading glasses to look. So, unless you actually pass nothing but parasites... -
ARCHIVED I Glutened My Daughter :-(
Ursa Major replied to kim26's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
It happens to the best of us. But I understand that you feel much worse having glutened your child than glutening yourself. The chamomile tea is a great idea, as it is very soothing. There really isn't much you can do other than be there for her and waiting it out. And reading ALL ingredients lists from now on! -
ARCHIVED Can Someone Help Me With My Lab Results?
Ursa Major replied to Nan2N's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Listen to your GI. Your blood work shows that you have celiac disease, and if you respond positively to the gluten-free diet you have a definitive answer. The biopsy can help diagnose, but a negative one can never rule out celiac disease. -
ARCHIVED Military Career Not Posisble With Careerillness
Ursa Major replied to Candy's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I don't believe people with celiac disease are allowed in the military. It isn't possible to feed them gluten-free in the field, and why would they want people who get violently ill from rations? -
ARCHIVED My Little Guy's Been Published!
Ursa Major replied to elye's topic in Publications & Publicity
You have every reason to be proud of your son, he sounds like an amazing kid. My oldest daughter lives in Kanata (for anybody who doesn't know, it is part of Ottawa). She and her five children are all gluten-free without any testing, with great results for most of them. I e-mailed her a link to your son's letter. -
ARCHIVED Social Functions At Work
Ursa Major replied to deesmith's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
You could make a big bowl of your own gluten-free potato salad, that you know will be safe, as well as a nice dessert, like an apple crisp, or gluten-free chocolate cake or gluten-free muffins. Make sure you arrange to serve yourself first from your own dishes, to avoid getting them cross contaminated before you get to them. A nice veggie tray is always appreciated... -
ARCHIVED Possibly Celiac?
Ursa Major replied to hjello's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Hi, and welcome to these boards. At least 40% of people with celiac disease are overweight, it can go either way. Malnutrition can cause people to either lose or gain. There are over 200 possible symptoms of celiac disease. Obviously, not everybody has all of them. In fact, it seems that few people present with the same symptoms. The minority of people... -
ARCHIVED Can Avoidance Cause Ige Sensitivity To Foods?
Ursa Major replied to mags's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
I don't know if they have something like epi-pens in italy (where this girl lived). When I told my family in Germany about them, they had no idea what it was, and had never seen one. In Germany, if you have an emergency, you call the emergency hotline, and they immediately send a doctor to your house (or wherever you are) if you can't get to a hospital or... -
ARCHIVED Are Onions Considered A Nightshade?
Ursa Major replied to cycler's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
No, the onion family is completely separate from nightshades. Nightshades include potatoes, tomatoes, pepper, eggplant, tobacco. Paprika (the spice) is derived from a pepper, and is therefore a nightshade food. Some people can't tolerate onions very well, but that is a different problem to the one nightshades pose. -
ARCHIVED New- Disappointed Don't Know Where To Go From Here
Ursa Major replied to starrymazed's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
The celiac disease tests aren't all that reliable, so it is possible that you had false negatives. But it may be non-celiac gluten intolerance, which can be just as bad as celiac disease, but won't show up on those tests. In either case, the gluten-free diet is the only cure for the problems. You have had some amazing results on the gluten-free diet... -
ARCHIVED Has Anyone Else Tried Humaworm?
Ursa Major replied to Nancym's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
I looked them up on the Internet. They are large enough and have a distinct enough shape to be able to identify them if you see them. I am sure that 'mysecretcurse' has done the same thing. Anyway, here is an update on how I am doing with the cleanse. As I was saying in an earlier post, I expected that sooner or later the high salicylate content... -
Oh good, I am glad you know to be on a gluten-free diet after all. But there are plenty of people, some of them now on this site, that were just given Dapsone, instead of being told to be on the gluten-free diet. There are so many ignorant doctors out there! Still, you should have been told that you have celiac disease. At least your doctor knew enough...

ARCHIVED Celiac Is Beating Me Down...
Ursa Major replied to Joni63's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
They were wrong, of course. No other cod liver oil is the same as Carlson's! I promise you, that this oil does NOT smell or taste fishy, or I wouldn't be able to take it, either. I tried Norwegian cod liver oil once, and gave up after two days. I simply couldn't handle it. They do have a smaller bottle (which I use when travelling), if you want to give... -
ARCHIVED Can Avoidance Cause Ige Sensitivity To Foods?
Ursa Major replied to mags's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Really, just your NOTICEABLE reaction has increased. In reality, the gluten was causing severe damage to your intestines, as evidenced by your severe weight loss and anemia. Now that your body isn't constantly on high alert and having a continuous autoimmune reaction any more, you generally feel better, and are healing. And now your immune system only... -
ARCHIVED Can Avoidance Cause Ige Sensitivity To Foods?
Ursa Major replied to mags's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
I read that story, which is a very poor example. This girl was allergic to dairy all along and it was appropriate to exclude it from her diet. Several of my grandchildren are dairy intolerant and had extreme eczema, which cleared up completely when dairy was eliminated. Not a single one of them subsequently developed a severe, life threatening allergy... -
ARCHIVED Celiac Is Beating Me Down...
Ursa Major replied to Joni63's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
A serum ferritin count of 7 is terrible. Normal is 40 to 300, with 110 being optimal. Several years ago my count was 4, while my hemoglobin was still 120 (normal is around 140). It takes a while for the hemoglobin to drop with low iron stores. But I was so weak, that some days I would get out of bed, and my legs would just give way! I'd have to crawl... -
ARCHIVED Wondering About My Husband
Ursa Major replied to tgrand's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Every one of your husband's health problems could be caused by a gluten intolerance. So, I think testing with Enterolab would be a wise choice, as then you will know for sure. If you do the whole works, you will also know his genes, which could definitely be helpful as well. Plus, he might be having a problem with dairy, which could also be the cause of his... -
ARCHIVED Does Anyone Have Asthma?
Ursa Major replied to Mango04's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
I've had asthma since I was three, and it is much better now. I rarely get an attack, and they are usually triggered by allergies. Two of my brothers didn't develop asthma until they were in their forties or fifties, respectively. I think with my older brother the problem is, that he has food intolerances which he dismisses, because he doesn't want to... -
ARCHIVED Night Terrors & Leg Pain
Ursa Major replied to angie315's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
It sounds like your daughter got glutened by whatever was in the bath water. There must have been gluten in the body wash! -
ARCHIVED Newbie
Ursa Major replied to toddzgrrl02's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
No, in general, cooking non-gluten-free food won't make us ill (like pasta). But if you use flour, some will get into the air and gets breathed in, it is inevitable. Plus there will be a fine layer of flour dust on things in the kitchen after using flour. If you touch those and then eat with your fingers, you get glutened. Regular kitchens can be a minefield... -
Whoever diagnosed you with DH did you a great disservice by not telling you that you have celiac disease. Not everybody with celiac disease has DH, but the only thing that causes DH is celiac disease. And the only thing that will heal and control DH is a strict, 100% gluten-free diet. The diet is the only viable treatment, everything else is just a bandaid...

ARCHIVED How Do You Make Your Font Pretty Colors?
Ursa Major replied to Violinist's topic in Board/Forum Technical Help
Well, you can hardly call me a violinist! By the way, how did the European tour go? -
ARCHIVED Pioneer Vitamins, Gluten-free?
Ursa Major replied to veggiemama's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Personally, I wouldn't use anything with barley grass. Why don't you try the hypoallergenic vitamins from Open Original Shared Link? With them you can be absolutely sure they are safe and good quality. -
ARCHIVED Can Going Gluten-free Raise Your Iq?
Ursa Major replied to Alternative mama's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Let me just say that if you have brain fog, a poor attention span etc. on gluten, any IQ tests would come out inaccurate. Take away the gluten, you can think properly and pay attention, I say it is an obvious conclusion that you would do much better on any kind of test, including an IQ test. So, I don't really think that being gluten-free will REALLY raise...
