  1. (aside from a minor cc issue), and I can already see improvement! No more bloating, having to fight to stay awake after eating; reduced mood swings, joint pain, brain fog. It's not all gone, but I can tell an improvement! I can work out without feeling like I'm gonna pass out, so hopefully I can put some muscle mass on (and maybe some more regular weight...
  2. Today was definitely interesting. I couldn't stay at home any longer, the urge to go out somewhere was overpowering. So, I went to my favorite "watering hole". When I walked in, the bartender looks at me and says "blue moon?" Then came the explaining part...she had no clue what celiac or "that gluten free thing" is. But she did seem actually interested in...
  3. To the OP, I spent 6+ years in restaurant management. If you tell a manager that you have an allergy, a well trained and intelligent manager will be jumping through hoops to accommodate you, or tell you straight up, "I'm sorry, I can't guarantee that dish is safe for you". Majority of servers (especially with the Hollywood gluten-free fad now) do think that...
  4. As for cross contamination in the house, don't ask me. I live alone, so it's all my place and nobody has the chance to mess anything up. But as for the cost of gluten free items, the non-processed foods (fruits, veggies, meat/seafood, etc that Beth listed) are a good price. If you want pasta, breads, flour, etc, (I have not checked this too much myself yet...
  5. 1 week in, and people are already torturing me. :-( Today I had a customer offer me some fresh (I could see the steam and smell them from a mile away) cookies! It was torture to say "no, thank you. I can't have them." Then, of course, she responded "the other mail man says y'all are allowed to have treats from customers." :-/ True story, we are allowed to...
  6. That was quite funny...even though I haven't experienced all of them yet. Love the video clips for each one! But I have to ask, what's the real deal with vinegar?
  7. I guess it's a good thing I'm still overly paranoid and read every label in detail. That would drive me nuts. As for the ignorance, I did find something at a store the other day that was in the "gluten free" section that I brought to the manager and showed him the gluten in the ingredients.
  8. Is the flour processed in a gluten-free facility? (not familiar with Bob's Red Mill)
  9. So I couldn't fight my craving for pasta...I tried some Rozinni gluten-free pasta today, and it tasted pretty good! Getting the right tenderness was tricky, but I managed. And I am happy to say, it's the first time in idk how long that I have eaten pasta without feeling like crap afterwards or passing out in 30 minutes!!!!
  10. Disclaimer: I am not a parent, I am not a medical professional (although I feel like I should have a doctorates with all the medical research I've done over the years searching for an answer) That being said, my personal feelings on the topic would be to allow your son to eat gluten at school, friend's houses, restaurants, etc. keeping an eye out for symptoms...
  11. I was already planning on making the drive Friday to the nearest store (Friday is payday) and stocking up on a bunch of random things to try. I'm kinda scared to do the online shopping cuz I like to actually look at the food in buying, not just a picture of it. :-/
  12. The closest big health foods store to me is about 50 miles. :-/ I found one in my town, but it's not do much a health foods store as it is a wholistic store. :-(
  13. Just curious if there are any Georgia people on here!
  14. So I got confused for a second there...I thought I kept clicking the same link, then realized y'all both linked to the same thread. But anywho, there's some helpful information there, but even with the no gluten risk first dates, I'm still scared of the feeling a connection, then we go out to eat and I ask for the allergen or gluten-free menu, and get "the...
  15. My name is georgia_guy. I'm young (25), I'm single, and I'm a newly Dx Celiac. *and the room chimes in "hi georgia_guy"* My question is, what is the best way to approach dating with celiac? Chances of finding a woman who has celiac are rather slim, so how does on go about saying "let's go to dinner, but I can't eat 90% of the things on the menu cuz I have...
  16. KCG91, I am in the USA, and as far as I know there are no laws (yet) that require labeling on possible contamination or that require labeling of contains gluten. I do think though that peanuts, milk, and egg are required already. So maybe soon we will have gluten requirements. FruitEnthusiast, I have been looking for products to say dedicated gluten-free...
  17. So quick question, is there a list anywhere of what to look out for on ingredient labels that can hint to "hidden gluten"? I know to look for obvious things like "wheat", but what about the random other things? What do I need to watch out for?
  18. There are gluten-free communion wafers available. Speak to your pastor and see if they can order them. The church I grew up in had several people who had celiac, and the church would order the gluten-free wafers, and the ministers knew to keep them separate from the rest, and those that had celiac always received communion first to avoid contamination on...
  19. Thank you all for the recommendations! Now I have some feedback on what others like, which gives me a starting place to begin exploring the world of gluten free products. Upsilamba- I spent 6 years managing restaurants having to listen to all kinda of different requests from "no salt" to celiacs. I've had experience in cooking the allergen requests myself...
  20. Remember, the biocard test is not a full panel for celiac. It is a good place to start (and a positive on it might be enough to get your doctor to listen). If I'm not mistaken, it tests for IgA only. IgA has a higher "false negative" percentage because a lot of celiacs are IgA deficient. That being said, if celiac makes sense, and biocard says it's negative...
  21. OP, I'm not sure how far you are from the USA border, but it may be worth it to look into coming to a private lab in the USA to get the tests done, then bring the results to your doctor. That would bypass the OHIP requiring doctor ordering the test, and your doctor saying that it's not worth it to pay out of pocket. I know that my insurance didn't want to...
  22. Waitingindreams, the "official" diagnosis is saying to get some sort of testing done. What you want is a doctor to say "you have celiac". Once that is said, there's really no medical professional that can dispute it. The exact testing method (blood, biopsy, or both) isn't as important as the doctor saying those 3 words. With a positive blood test, the only...
  23. I am going to the doctor next week to get a battery of blood work done (CBC, metabolic panel, etc) to see where I'm at with that stuff so I can work with the nutritionist and continued monitoring to ensure they get back to a normal range. My doctor is also concerned about medication levels for my current Rx's, so those will be monitored very closely. While...
  24. I'm gonna use that as my motto when I do tell them. It makes sense. :-)
  25. Kaayrah, first I want to say Happy Belated Birthday! (Profile shows it) I am like you with being newly diagnosed after trying to find a doctor to actually listen to me (then when I did, insurance didn't want to cooperate). But anywho, today was my day 1 of being gluten-free. I live in a relatively small city in northwest GA, so there's not much around me...
