  1. Well, Elvis's favorite snack, according to longtime lore, was deep-fried peanut-butter sandwiches. Now, sickening as that initially sounds, I think I would have to try one of those given the chance!
  2. Fascinating how we're all so different...and frustrating, too, because it's impossible to detect a definite effect across the board. My blood sugar shoots up after I've been glutened and takes a substantial amount of regular insulin to bring down. Extra motivation to stay on the gluten-free diet!
  3. Funny, this is the second thread I've been on in the last two weeks where I found myself defending Dr. Mercola. Ursula, where are you?
  4. Anyone interested in some in-depth, reputable articles on the real health dangers of not just Splenda (chlorinated sugar) but Aspartame as well, can peruse the library of Joseph Mercola, at mercola.com. I now use stevia for my coffee...
  5. Yep, it's true...type one diabetes offers a life that is often no picnic. But honestly, if I could trade in either the celiac or the diabetes, I'd choose the celiac in a heartbeat. If you commit to keeping good blood sugar control, you will keep all your toes and your eyesight. Now, mind you I've been type one for thirty-three years, so the diet is deeply...
  6. I'm in Ontario, where pretty much across the province our healthcare system is now deeply flawed. Our rate of C sections is also up considerably (I was lucky enough to have two great, uncomplicated natural deliveries) and the very worst part about this is the fact that because there's no money in our system, patients are being pushed out of the hospital...
  7. I only occasionally have a rough night's sleep--either taking forever falling asleep or waking up halfway through and lying there awake for hours. When it happens, I have also had great success with valerian. Scullcap is another herbal remedy that I have found effective, particularly when the insomnia is due to stress. Hope this helps, as I know how bad...

    ARCHIVED Celiac In The News

Gfp, I imagine these conversations all the time when I'm at a restaurant, and I'm sure that lazy servers are leaving dropped gluten sources in our salads quite often. And because I don't get obvious GI symptoms when glutened, it is a big concern for me. That's why I always say that I am "deathly allergic" to gluten when I order my meal insted of "I am celiac...
  9. I have long been asking myself these same questions, jestgar...could my father's depression, his IBS, his arthritis, could these "diseases" be really celiac symptoms? Of course, I believe, they could be, even though his celiac panel came back "inconclusive". I am certain that untreated celiac can cause these illnesses. Autoimmune disorders, not sure.....
  10. I agree with Ursula, Norah...you shouldn't kid around with this. I'm glad to hear you will be seeing your doc, just to rule out something like hypothyroid. My thyroid gland didn't swell before I was diagnosed with low thyroid, but I know it is a common symptom, and easily treated.
  11. The Fluoride Deception...I'll head to Chapters this afternoon. Thanks.
  12. I have been hearing exactly the same thing about distilled water, in particular from my old chemist friend. I wonder why it is so difficult to find? Hey, there's a lucrative business idea...
  13. Wow, Faithinsciencetoo...have you ever had a load to bear. You say my dad's lucky to have me, mygawd, your siblings (and also your father) have been so lucky to have YOU! What a hero you are, dealing with all your dysfunctional-family issues as you have, and when sick with untreated celiac! Hugs and kudos to you. You are absolutely right...we must feel...
  14. Man...Well, at least with melanoma, the tests are very conclusive. The tests for celiac can be inaccurate (at least, a negative can be), so running the panel on someone who is loath to believe they have a chronic illness can do more harm than good. Now my dad REALLY believes that he's free and clear...when we really don't know that at all!
  15. I've learned that even suceeding in getting family members tested won't always work out. I finally convinced my dad to get the panel run in the spring as he has had symptoms since I was a kid. Their GP (whom my parents adore) ran the blood work, and his tests were, quote, "inconclusive/negative". I gently told my parents that there ARE false negatives...
  16. I have always had much better blood sugar control when my grain intake stays low...and I'm sure now that many of the past sudden spikes in my BS, "for no good reason", were caused by a gluten-filled meal. Brown rice and gluten-free pasta have never caused these fluctuations like a slice of rye toast did. Amazing how illuminating hindsight can be!...
  17. Dr. Mercola does address the dangers that fluorine poses to the immune system. He talks about the research of Dr. Barry Peatfield, a British endocrinologist who is the leading world authority on thyroid disorders. I was pointed to a piece he wrote on fluoride, where he explains how fluorine distorts protein structure, which causes the misfiring of our...
  18. Of course, you're all absolutely right...even moderately priced bottled (or jugged) water is well worth the investment we are making in our long-term health. But doesn't it just rankle you when you really think about the fact that you are having to spend money on drinking water? What has the world come to, when we actually have to pay money for healthy...
  19. This is all truly alarming...I was speaking with a chemist friend of mine this morning who tells me that boiling water will actually CONDENSE the fluoride within it. So our tea and coffee are in fact worse than our water. A reverse osmosis system is exceedingly expensive, as are the other couple of home flourine-eliminating systems I checked out. We remain...
  20. Wow...I read your posts frequently, Ursula, and I know you know what you're talking about. Mercola has just been too bang-on about too many things in the past for me to be poo-pooing his fluoride-thyroid connection. It's truly a scary revelation to me. It's also unfortunate that a voice like Joseph Mercola's is so easily dismissed by many (I've had it...
  21. I know that many of us celiacs have a cluster of autoimmune disorders, underactive thyroid being one of them. I've been doing quite a bit of research on it as I have been newly diagnosed as hypothyroid. Have any of you heard of a connection between low thyroid function and excess fluoride? I've come to trust anything Dr. Josephh Mercola writes about, and...
  22. You, know, Karen, that's fascinating, because I had exactly the same problem during both pregnancies, when I was give a HUGE (I mean, like four-litre) plastic jug to collect 24 hours worth of urine to have tested for various things. It was too big to put under me while sitting on the toilet, so I had to try to do it with my legs only slightly bent. And...
  23. Yep, I'm a long-time hoverer...gotta do regular squats with a barbell to keep trained for this, especially for the stop-at-a-gas-station-on-a-long-trip adventures, when the duration that one is hovering can be quite challenging...
  24. Ditto, ditto, ditto! The big pharmaceutical companies wield so much power, it is indeed staggering. I will always believe that there is as yet no cure for type one diabetes, a HUGE money-generator for these cartels, because the financial blow would be too great for them. Their control of scientific research funding allows them to pick and choose what...
  25. Yep, I agree with Mayflowers...I was constantly tired AND freezing cold until I was diagnosed with hypothyroid. I'm on synthroid, and I've never looked back!
