  1. Does anyone know about flax seeds with SCD? I couldn't find any mention of it in the book, but I'm wondering if it has been mentioned elsewhere?

    ARCHIVED Hidden Gluten

If you have particular Avon products you want to check out, email Avon and ask them. I sent them a question about their Anew eyelift cream, and they got back to me in one day saying it was gluten free. Here's the email address for Avon: dearavon@avon.com
  3. Your HAIR grows faster now??? I haven't heard that before! Interesting....

    ARCHIVED Aching

I get terrible muscle and joint aches a couple of hours after eating either gluten or dairy. The nightshades seem to also give me trouble, so for the most part, I avoid them. Have you checked into the possibility of some sort of casein sensitivity?
  5. Thanks for the input! He doesn't really have any symptoms...I just took the opportunity to get in a cheap test since he was having a blood draw for the other things, just to see. I think I'll get him the Enterolab gene test, just to see what it shows....so he'll know whether to be suspicious later on in life in case something comes up.
  6. There truly do not seem to be any particular set of symptoms which apply to all people with celiac disease. I always thought I was lactose intolerant, and I had terrible problems with any dairy, but thru testing for celiac I discovered I am casein sensitive, which is a whole different thing, and means you must always avoid casein same as gluten. When I...
  7. How does it taste? I'm wondering how I'd do with it....I have some trouble with potatoes.
  8. Since my son had hit his insurance deductible in Dec. and he was having a cholesterol etc. test done as part of a yearly exam, I had the doctor throw in the celiac panel since it would cost next to nothing at that point. He wrote "celiac panel" on the form. When I got to the lab, they wanted to know more specifically, and he said antibody test, basically...

    ARCHIVED Not A Good Day

I went fairly strictly gluten/casein free on Nov. 25, indulged in some stuff around Christmas (not a lot, though), was fairly good until my diagnosis came in on Jan. 18. Then I was alternately good and bad, and did a lot of cheating (son's birthday on Jan. 19...ate a ton of cake). So no, I haven't been totally gluten free all that time. Feb. 25 was the...
  10. Actually, this isn't my dog. However, I had the photo because it looked exactly (and was the the same breed) as my 15 years old dog (how she looked as a young dog) which I had to put to sleep a year ago. This type of dog usually lives 10-12 years, but mine made it to 15 and only got bad at the end. It's a wolf-husky hybrid. Just the sweetest, most...
  11. Interesting...one rarely hears or reads anything about celiac disease in Australia...I wonder if it's better known than here, and if a lot of people know they have it there. I would think their rates are similar to here...
  12. No no no....I specifically asked Dr. Fine about this once...both parents do not have to give you a gene. You need only ONE gene to have problems. If you have TWO genes (one from each parent) your likelihood of having problems is far greater, however. And there are some people with no identified genes that have celiac disease, so there are obviously some...
  13. WOW...you have a doctor who had you do an Enterolab test!! I'm impressed that he knew about it! However, he loses his brownie points because he couldn't explain your test to you!!! Didn't Enterolab send you an email with results? Basically, with just the IgA test (and not the full panel), anthing less than 10 is "normal", so you are showing a definite...
  14. I finally tried my coconut milk yogurt tonight...I mixed in some chopped strawberries, and it's wonderful...really it is! I think anyone who ate this would think it was yogurt, but would wonder about the different flavor, which is sort of like coconut but then not exactly. But it's nice. A bit thin, but not bad....next time I'll try to add a bit more gelatin...
  15. I have the Yogourmet one which I'm really happy with, but I don't really think the technology is different with any of them. The Yogourmet makes up to 2 quarts, which is kind of a lot, and I think the Salton, which is very similar, makes 1 quart...plus the Salton is about $20 so it's less than half the price of the other one (which comes with a thermometer...
  16. Yogurt update.....I think there is another SCD thread going on where I was posting about yogurt, but now I can't find it. Anyhow, I made the coconut milk yogurt Sunday nite, let it go 24 hrs until Monday nite, and when I took it out of the yogurt maker it seemed totally liquid. So I refrigerated it until this morning, and now it's somewhat set. It think...
  17. I've been trying to get more info about a person's status as having celiac disease vs. just being gluten sensitive. I had a gene for each, and of course, since I haven't had a biopsy I can't really know which one of these is operational with me. So I asked these questions of Enterolab: 1) "With reference to your statement: "Please know that casein...
  18. I hear all of you! But I think it gets better...for me it is. The first 6 weeks after my diagnosis I was in some kind of denial, I think. I'd feel better and get "celiac/dairy amnesia" and think I felt so good, OK, I can have this or that. And the next couple of days, sometimes that very evening I'd feel terrible. I did the roller coaster thing for about...
  19. I'm in the same boat as you....despite having my mother as an example, I thought most of my life my odds were low (that's what doctors used to say) and that I had escaped it because I did not react like my mom did. So I just found out in January, and I'm 56! So I have to worry about what damage was done all these years. I'm just amazed I didn't put 2 and...
  20. Also...the doctor who runs Enterolab is not only a DOCTOR, but he is a doctor who has chosen for many years to specialize in CELIAC DISEASE and its diagnosis. His method was developed in response to the dissatisfaction he had with traditional blood testing, which misses a lot of people for various reasons. He realized his stool test caught huge numbers...

    ARCHIVED Not A Good Day

After not eating most of the day, I had a can of Amy's low fat gluten free split pea soup....it was pretty good, I was surprised actually. And a few Mary's gone Crackers, which aren't bad, especially if you dip them into the soup. So far so good, but I guess tomorrow's the test (or tonight). But it's about 6 hours later and I feel great, so I'm hopeful...
  22. Nancy...would you mind posting your lemon curd recipe here....I searched for it on that other site but didn't see it. Thanks! That sounds good, that combination. I thought of another question about the SCD type yogurt. Is the purpose of the yogurt mainly to get the good bacteria into us....and not really for any quality of the milk itself??? Since...
  23. I asked that of Dr. Fine when I got my test results, and he confirmed that you only actually need one celiac gene to have a predisposition. You get one gene from each parent, so you could get one celiac gene, plus a second gene from the other parent that was some non-gluten related gene, so you either could get celiac or you might not, 50% chance I guess...

    ARCHIVED Not A Good Day

I don't have the cookie packages any more, but I checked both the bagel and the donut bag, and tapioca starch was the 2nd or 3rd ingredient, plus a lot of other stuff. I have never been a big rice eater....despite the fact that it is supposed to not be a problem for most people, I've always had this kind of 6th sense about not eating it much, so I don...
  25. Coconut milk yogurt disaster? I finished the yogurt and put it in the fridge....it was roughly 24 hours since I made it. But it's total liquid. I put about 3/4 packet of gelatin in, but it sure doesn't seem to have thickened it at all, unless the refrigeration will do the trick. I tasted it...seemed OK, but I sure wish it would thicken up. What did...
