Thanks for the comraderie. I still can't believe I made such an obvious mistake, but at least now I know what happens when I eat significant gluten. I was curious. By this time I'm still having the digestive issues, and I took a hit on the throat and stomach pain progress, but other symptoms are improving. Next Thanksgiving, live and learn, no gluten...

I was wondering how long it takes others to recover after being hit by gluten. I have been gluten free, to my knowledge, since I was diagnosed last April, but on Thanksgiving, for some inexplicable reason, I spaced out and had gravy on my turkey and mashed potatoes. The flour kind of gravy. About 30 min after ingesting it I felt a band of pain across my...

I am seven months out from diagnosis and going completely gluten-free, and let me tell you that gluten withdrawal is very real, and headaches were one of my major symptoms. You have to hang in there and be religious about your diet and avoiding cross contamination, and you WILL feel better. I remember being so impatient to feel better and wondering if my...

ARCHIVED Dizziness/lightheadedness
StClair replied to Niteyx13's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
There are different causes for dizziness. I have had several experiences of awful vertigo, one sending me to the emergency room, and in each case the cause could be traced to my ears. Blowing my nose heavily/repeatedly, a broken eardrum one time after plane flight. Tiny crystals floating in the inner ear fluid get disturbed and cause havoc with your equilibrium... -
I know that pineapple has no gluten, but because having Celiac can make you prone to various ailments (migraine, lactose intolerance, etc) I wondered if it could make someone intolerant to acid foods. The symptoms that eventually lead to my Celiac diagnosis were acid reflux and gastritis, something I still struggle with to some degree. I definitely avoid...

I have never been able to eat pineapple without uncomfortable effects. Depending on when and how much I eat, I can get painful raised red patches on my tongue, a prickly feeling in my mouth or numb taste buds. The patchy tongue can also happen from eggplant, walnuts or too much acid of any kind. I wonder if this can be related to Celiac? Maybe I'll post...

ARCHIVED Drinking Glucose To Test For Sibo?
StClair replied to Firsttimemama2014's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
I just did this test through my doctor, along with testing for lactose and fructose. The fructose test was the only one to come back positive for me. My understanding is that because Celiac compromises your intestines, you can develop these intolerances. Don't worry about drinking the glucose. I tolerated it easily, and so did the other four people doing... -
ARCHIVED Celiac Advice
StClair replied to Jimmymtfan19's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Your symptoms sound very similar to mine--throat pain, heavy fatigued arms and legs and headaches especially. I have been gluten free (I hope) since April 1st, 5 mons. In my experience it has taken awhile to see improvement, though there has been some by this time. I discovered through breath testing that I have fructose malabsorption, due to long undiagnosed... -
A genetic test will give you more info, and then you can decide better how to proceed. If it indicates that Celiac is very likely, then you may want to just continue the diet. If the results show the chances are less likely then you can commit to six weeks of a cracker a day, and then go through the testing. That's what I would do if it were me.

ARCHIVED Do You Eat gluten-free Oatmeal?
StClair replied to StClair's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
OP here. Well, I had a big bowl of oatmeal this morning, 3 months post-diagnosis and gluten free (as far as I know), and so far everything is fine. In my former life, pre-gluten-free, oatmeal would always make me feel a little bit queasy for awhile, but nothing now. And it was a big bowl. Breakfast is starting to look up! I've also recently tried gluten... -
ARCHIVED Halitosis And Body Odor...feeling Embarrassed...please Help!
StClair replied to powerofpositivethinking's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Are you still having any digestive issues, like gas and bloating (sorry)? Lactose or Fructose Intolerance can cause bad breath (ask me how I know) due to the gasses being absorbed into the bloodstream and then breath. Just a thought. Oops, sorry. I just saw your last post. So glad that it turned out to be his problem, not yours. Good thing you didn... -
ARCHIVED Anyone Deal With Gastritis?
StClair replied to Palvyre's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
You and I sound very similar--moderate gastritis, acute and chronic esophagitis, no h pylori. Gastritis and Acid Reflux symptoms, and no relief from PPIs, are what eventually led me to my Celiac diagnosis. When I asked my doctor at diagnosis whether Celiac had anything to do with this condition she said, "It has everything to do with it." Since then I... -
ARCHIVED Acid Reflux Contuinues... Help!
StClair replied to Tigercat17's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I feel you on the PPIs not working, and then the difficulty of weaning off of them. Six weeks of Prilosec, a week of that double dose, and I got no results. Like you, it was only the gluten free diet and the low acid diet that gave any relief. It is so much better now at the three month (almost) gluten free mark. I am still careful about acid foods and... -
ARCHIVED Acid Reflux Contuinues... Help!
StClair replied to Tigercat17's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Just a few ideas to offer, along with sympathy from someone who has struggled with acid reflux. First, you might try cutting the quinoa out of your diet. It gives me acid reflux, and when looked it up I found that this is not uncommon, even in non celiacs. When I was weaning off Prilosec, I was prescribed Pepcid which seemed to do something, but it was... -
Love reading these gluten free retrospectives! I'm pushing three months post diagnosis now and am in the delightful discovery phase of perceiving just how much has been wrong and is now starting to come right. Who knew my dust mite allergy could have anything to do with Celiac, yet it is improving. To answer the question about favorite improvement, the...

I love my family, too. My son made me my favorite cake for Mother's Day, coconut, all from scratch and gluten free. They respect my gluten free table in the kitchen, but I look with envy on families that maintain a completely gluten free kitchen for their loved ones and plan meals for them. That is not happening here! Oh well, I love them anyway!

I pretty much carry organic brown rice cakes everywhere I go. Yesterday I topped them with hummus, the day before with cheese (I can tolerate that about once a week), another with Di Lusso turkey, another with almond butter, etc. They have stepped into the bread role for me. Make it yourself trail mix with known safe ingredients, in a paper cup, go with...

ARCHIVED Three Weeks In: Updates And Brain Fog
StClair replied to ThisIsMyUserName's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I'm new too, diagnosed on April 1st, so over two months in now. I definitely see improvement, but I've finally gotten over expecting all my problems to go away immediately and then being disappointed. The folks here have been very patient with me. The fact that the migraines are 50% better and the esophagitis/gastritis is improved is something to celebrate... -
My guess is that everyone reacts differently to consuming gluten, either accidentally or on purpose. I've read here that that there are 300 different symptoms of celiac disease, so your response will probably be unique to you. That said, serious damage can be done without your even knowing about it, so better not to consider cheating on the gluten free...

ARCHIVED Struggling - The Hardest Part
StClair replied to webbooo's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I was diagnosed at about the same time as you and am in a similar mind space. Between the gluten-free, acid reflux/gastritis and lactose/fructose intolerance diets there's not much left to eat (I don't like red meat or fish, only chicken) and I'm still losing weight. I've had some improvement, I think, with digestion, migraines and anxiety, so that's something... -
I would love to try out oatmeal, but I am nervous because I've been told that even the gluten-free kind can cause problems for celiacs. My diet is severely restricted due to problems with acid reflux/gastritis, and fructose/lactose intolerances, and I need to find more gentle, nourishing food. I would eat it, even with a few "side-effects," as long as...

I'm scheduled for a hydrogen breath test for Fructose Malabsorption in close to four weeks, and I already suspect that I have it. I've decided to go on a low fructose (in addition to zero celiac, of course!) diet now, out of curiosity, and to see if I can add bloating to my list of improved symptoms. I also still have some heartburn and gastritis that I...
