  1. From what I've read, serum B12 levels won't show a deficiency until you're in deep trouble, since the body will rob the vitamin from tissues and organs, in order to keep blood levels up. Since there is no known level of overdose for B12, you can safely try a supplement and see how you feel. I'd recommend a sublingual methylcobalamin tablet/lozenge, at between...
  2. It sounds like she may be dairy intolerant. This is very common with Celiac too. Even if she's not dairy intolerant, the digestive system may not be up to the challenge due to damage from Celiac. I'd highly suggest taking her off all dairy immediately, and see how she does. Incidentally, the tests for Celiac are not reliable for children under about 6...
  3. Sounds to me like you may have been experiencing some fluid retention. That is common for individuals with Celiac. Glad you're feeling better!
  4. I agree that bringing a lunch is the best option. Do you have a favorite gluten-free bread? Homemade is generally best, and costs much less too. If the cafeteria has a microwave oven, it might be worth asking for permission to use it. That could open up many options for you. A frozen meal will stay plenty cold enough until lunch time, when you could heat...
  5. There may be risk of CC. Someone who knows will hopefully reply. However, there's always the gluten-free, dairy-free products such as Open Original Shared Link and Open Original Shared Link.
  6. I think the question of your percentage of body fat is an important one. Muscle weighs more than fat. Just weighing more isn't necessarily good. It should be in the form of whatever your body lacks. So it might be fat, or muscle, or both. There's also bone density to consider. I don't know what sort of tests are done to determine these things. Have you...
  7. Well, if it's anything like using chia seed meal, then I'd have to say it won't work very well. But in any case, since chia is gluten-free, it simply cannot work just like wheat flour. Many gluten-free flours can be used for a small percentage of the flour in traditional wheat flour recipes without messing up the results. However, realistically, if there...
  8. The rice flour in many gluten-free recipes can be replaced with sorghum and/or other flours. Buckwheat works nicely for pancakes. Gluten-Free crackers are easy to make, and can turn out well with numerous types of flours.
  9. Your suspicions may very well be correct, as DH is not always symmetrical. But even if it isn't DH, it doesn't mean you aren't sensitive to gluten. Many members here have and do experience odd rashes, blisters, and other manifestations on the skin. Welcome to the board!
  10. I certainly did have tremendous difficulty sleeping before going gluten-free. Just couldn't sleep, and didn't know why. There wasn't much if any reason that I could figure, though looking back, I think it was basically a neurological effect. Anyway, since going gluten-free/dairy-free, and a few other things (and taking supplements), I have no trouble falling...
  11. If you haven't tried a digestive enzyme formula, it might be worth doing. Just make sure it is derived completely from microbial sources. Otherwise they tend to get destroyed by the acidity of the stomach. Consider NOW Foods Digest Gold, or the one from Doctor's Best. There are probably other decent ones out there, but those two I recently found when looking...
  12. It didn't mean there wasn't any natural food left in the store at all. Just that the next shipment containing such items wasn't due until Friday. Stores generally don't wait to run out of something before ordering more, but sometimes sales exceeds expectations.
  13. That may be, as chocolate is a legume, and so are green peas. Can you tolerate carob? How about guar gum or locust bean gum? I didn't see soy on the list, but it seems reasonable that you were tested for it. Lentils may work for you, I suppose. They are even higher in protein than most beans. As for the strawberries and kiwi, I'd wonder about pesticides...
  14. For those who cannot have either gluten or soy, there's Open Original Shared Link.
  15. Yeah, I know she isn't intolerant/Celiac (as far as she knows). However, seems to me many get a negative on tests, even though some antibodies are detected. So I wouldn't feel comfortable thinking that there are absolutely zero antibodies present. Plus I never say never, when gluten intolerance is concerned. I mean, if it's in the family... Not suggesting...
  16. If the digestive enzymes aren't derived from microbes, they may be getting destroyed by the time they get into the small intestine. Also, many enzyme formulas lack certain types of enzymes which other formulas have. So it may be that you aren't getting the right kind, or enough of, the specific ones you need. Both NOW Foods and Doctor's Best make a formula...
  17. Does "no grains" include seeds like amaranth, buckwheat, and quinoa? Any of these can make a tasty hot cereal, if you're into that sort of thing. Buckwheat flour makes great pancakes. If you can eat coconut, there's some divine coconut yogurt made by Turtle Mountain, called Open Original Shared Link. Coconut contains a healthy amount of caprylic acid,...
  18. Country Life makes one which meets your requirements. The potency is 800 mcg, UPC# 015794065210. HTH
  19. It sounds like they may be processed in a facility which also processes soy and wheat. Since dry beans should be sorted and rinsed well anyway, I'd like to think they'd be ok after that. But if you notice problems, then the choice is obvious.
  20. I've read some brands of rice cakes are more subject to CC. So I wonder if it isn't rice, but trace amounts of gluten, or perhaps some other contaminate getting into the rice cakes. Especially since you've found products with rice flour seem tolerable. Open Original Shared Link has some nice varieties of rice and other rice products. I've not heard of...
  21. Sounds to me like you'd benefit from taking magnesium, co-enzyme B vitamins, potassium, vitamin D3, and perhaps zinc. Some other nutrients which benefit the nervous system include phosphatidyl serine and choline, both abundant in lecithin. Though multivitamins can have many nutrients in one pill, they often lack meaningful potency for some of those nutrients...
  22. How tall are you, Jason? How have you determined that you "should" be 155-157 pounds? IMHO, 144 pounds doesn't seem too far from the mark though. I find a lot of people believe they are underweight if they aren't as heavy as others their height, but I would point out that the average person these days is in fact overweight. Not that you shouldn't gain any...
  23. Though I haven't been looking for information on the subject, there have been many threads on this board about it. A search should turn them up. However, seems to me the consensus is that the gluten you ingest will effect the baby, not just via the milk, but right now, before birth. Again, I've not been delving into the subject, but I'd say the antibodies...
  24. For gluten-free grains, flours and other things, I find Open Original Shared Link has a nice selection and comparatively good prices. But do be careful with amaranth. In my experience, both the grain and flour seem quite prone to mold. Smell it as soon as you get it, to make sure it's ok. I generally keep most of it frozen so it won't spoil before I get...
  25. Sudden changes or increases in symptoms are quite a typical experience for many of us. Including hair loss. I think you have two choices at this point: 1) Put up with the discomfort and pains until you've gotten all the tests which seem appropriate. Continue eating gluten even though it may be damaging your insides, to increase the likelihood of accurate...
