ARCHIVED My sister may be gluten intolerant, but we're not sure
Irene Joanne replied to PaqWoman's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
You'd need to see a doctor for blood work anyways if you think it could be celiac. I wouldn't rule out appendix problems yet. I had horrible stomach pains for months before doctors figured out it was my appendix. That's not common- but it does happen. If the pain keeps getting worse- don't waste time getting her to a hospital or doctors office. It took doctors... -
ARCHIVED My sister may be gluten intolerant, but we're not sure

Where is the stomach pain? Could it be her appendix? She really should see a doctor. -
ARCHIVED Celiac.com: 7 Gluten-Free Easter Candy Options To Make Your Tastebuds Hop
Irene Joanne replied to Scott Adams's topic in Publications & Publicity
Remember if you're in Canada- these may not be gluten free. I made the mistake of eating rolo's once because on this site someone said it was gluten free. I painfully learned that this does NOT apply to Canada. -
ARCHIVED Holiday meal at in-laws
Irene Joanne replied to BDD's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
My in laws are very understanding about celiac but prefer I bring my own food, which I am happy to do because even if they tried I'd have a hard time trusting it was okay. It's an adjustment for sure- because I hate being different and eating something different than everyone else. BUT it sure beats getting sick. This is easy because I don't have to travel... -
ARCHIVED Gluten free and still not feeling "normal"
Irene Joanne replied to Holleychica's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I can relate. I was diagnosed one month before you- I did have two accidental glutenings though and a dose of antibiotics that really put me back. I'm booked to see an allergist today because I'm having multiple reactions to gluten free foods as well. My dietician told me it's normal to have other food sensitivities come up when a person goes undiagnosed... -
ARCHIVED Gluten free a week- still have afternoon stomach pains
Irene Joanne replied to Foxtrot's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I was diagnosed almost four months ago- I'm having reactions to many gluten free foods as well. My dietician told me it's not uncommon when a person has undiagnosed celiac for a long time. As my intestines heal- that should get better. From all the reading I've done I understand that could take a year or more. -
ARCHIVED only DGP Iga positive and strong symptoms
Irene Joanne replied to mam's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Just the gluten free diet. No need for antibiotics. I needed a dose of antibiotics over Christmas for strep throat- with my intestinal damage from celiac, my body did not handle the antibiotics very well.... -
ARCHIVED Persistent iron deficiency--just got back from endoscopy
Irene Joanne replied to ccole93's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I felt the same as you- but honestly I've been baking some pretty fantastic gluten free foods- plus real food is gluten free:) I won't lie- it is hard.... But it gets easier and when you feel better you won't mind so much. I just look around me at all the people with undiagnosed celiac or other health issues and I'm just so grateful to know what's wrong... -
ARCHIVED Quinoa and Back Pain?
Irene Joanne replied to anyana's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
I had quinoa today and had horrible stomach pain. This is the first time since diagnosed with celiac last November that I tried it. Sadly, like gluten free oats- this is another grain I can not have? From what I've read it seems as though theres a chance I would react to millet too if I react to quinoa. I'm tempted to go completely grain free as I'm a little... -
ARCHIVED I may have found the answer to my problems
Irene Joanne replied to alllli's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
That's interesting. I have celiac - my ferritin is low and my B12 level quite high. When you get the celiac blood work done- you should also get your thyroid checked. Don't stop eating gluten until you've had the good work and biopsy done for celiac -
ARCHIVED Positive blood test - very confused!
Irene Joanne replied to kam00096's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Even if you have a negative biopsy, you could still have a gluten sensitivity and still do much better off gluten. I can understand it's a hard decision to make. I'm in Canada and don't know how your health care compares. Because I don't have a lot of willpower when it comes to diet- it helps me to know 100% for sure that I have celiac. I can relate to the... -

Have you had your iron and B12 levels tested? How about your thyroid? I can relate to what you're saying- it's been three months for me and I'm kind of in the same boat. My ferritin levels are very low though and I'm getting iron injections which help a lot. I'm also learning that healing takes energy and I need to give my body a break and rest often

ARCHIVED Delaying the inevitable
Irene Joanne replied to lcamero2's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I don't think you're crazy- but keep eating your cookies! You need to keep eating gluten for a accurate diagnose. -
ARCHIVED Positive blood test - very confused!
Irene Joanne replied to kam00096's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
HI! I'm glad I had the biopsy but if I had to wait six months, I'm not sure if I would have waited. BUT on the other hand I would rather stay on gluten for three or more months than go off and do the challenge. after being off of gluten for even a month your reactions could become so much worse and a challenge would be unbearable. I've been gluten free since... -

Absolutely a connection between celiac and brain fog- problem for me is that I have been off gluten for over three months and I still have lots of brain fog that gets really severe soon after eating. I'm careful with my gluten free diet- but maybe not careful enough... My thoughts are that I'm having other food sensitivities that are also causing the brain...

ARCHIVED Anxiety and depression! ?
Irene Joanne replied to KJDx's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
My anxiety was really bad the six months before I was diagnosed too. My mental health is so much better after going gluten free. -
ARCHIVED Thyroid lab result question
Irene Joanne replied to Stacy0w's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
I agree- but it's hard to find a thyroid doctor that agrees? The doctor doesn't believe I would swing from hypo to hyper because I had a hyperactive thyroid when 17 and the meds I took for that made me hypo active. Doctors theory is that there isn't enough thyroid left to become hyperactive. My symptoms disagree.... Thanks for the link- I have read... -
ARCHIVED Thyroid lab result question
Irene Joanne replied to Stacy0w's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
My appointment went okay. I guess I wanted answers because I've still been ill a lot- yet all he really said is get your thyroid levels checked every six months for now because I am at high risk of needing treatment at some point. My antibodies have gone down some in the last few months being gluten free- so hopefully that keeps getting better. I was on a... -
Don't try going gluten free until you've had the celiac blood test and a biopsy- otherwise you'll never really know one of my bigger symptoms of celiac was sleeping all the time! Naps during the day and then 12-14 hours at night. I also have the scalp issues. Dont let a doctor tell you constipation isn't a symptom of celiac- because it sure is...
