  1. Hi Eve, Welcome to the forum! Keep in mind that we've all been through the frustration of adjusting to a gluten-free diet and trying to heal. We feel your pain (literally!) I found it really helpful to stay on a very simple diet of meat, veggies and a little potato and brown rice. Make sure you chew carefully, and I even used to put hard to digest...
  2. For those of you who have a problem with frequent urination, think about whether you might have a vitamin D deficiency. Apparently, if your vitamin D is low, your body leeches calcium from your bones, and you pee a lot to get rid of the excess calcium in your blood. Celiacs have a high risk for vitamin D deficiency because we have trouble absorbing vitamin...
  3. Wow, this thread turned out to be kinda fun! There's a lot of ass jacks in the world. Who the heck comments on other peoples' food orders? It's none of their frickin' business, is it? I haven't run into any jerks like this, but now I'll be ready when I do!
  4. For those of you in the west metro, I went to Lakewinds grocery store today. There are 3 of them: Minnetonka, Anoka and Chanhassen. I went to the Minnetonka store, which is on Hwy 5, about 2 miles west of 494. It had (by far) the biggest collection of gluten-free food I've seen. Pretty much everything you could imagine from Glutino and Kinnikinnick...
  5. I love kombucha! It gets pretty expensive, so now I've started making my own.
  6. Fruits and veggies are your friend -- no danger of gluten. You can get bags of frozen broccoli and cauliflower on sale for a buck. Sweet potatoes/yams make a nice change from potatoes (and have lots more vitamins). I bought a slow cooker ($20 at Target) and have been having fun with it. You can fill it up and cook while you're at school or overnight...
  7. I found it's best not to mention the celiac right away. After a few dates, women start thinking, "Ohmigod! He's perfect! How can such an amazing guy still be single??" Then they'll start concocting weird scenarios in their head -- he must be a felon, he must be secretly married, maybe he's a psycho killer. Then, when they find out that my only flaw is...
  8. Fat and protein are hard to digest. I get stomach aches and acid reflux when I eat high fat meals. I've found that digestive enzymes help a lot.
  9. Did anyone ever get info on Almond Joy minis? I haven't been feeling well, and the only thing I ate that was suspect was 3 Almond Joy minis, so I won't be eating those again!
  10. I've had problems with Lays; it took me months to figure it out, since the ingredients are just potatoes, oil and salt. Lays apparently has CC problems. I won't eat them. (MSG is used in the flavored chips, not the plain ones).
  11. Has he tried drinking more water? The feeling he describes sounds like something I used to get -- especially at night. I'd wake up in the middle of the night with this horrible pain inside my butt. One factor in C is dehydration -- your body needs lots of water in the colon to form a passable stool. I found relief (and, eventually, a poop!) by drinking...
  12. I LOVE SALT! I find myself putting salt on everything -- to the point that my nieces lecture me about eating too much salt (the school has them convinced that everyone who uses salt is going to die of a heart attack). I think a lot of the salt craving comes from eating natural foods that don't have added salt. I suspect if we actually measured how...
  13. Me too! I never drank very much, but whenever I had a couple beers, I'd get bad D the next morning. I never connected it to gluten; I assumed it was the alcohol. Like a lot of things, it makes sense in retrospect, but at the time I never guessed it might be celiac.
  14. Is your new apartment in an older building? I've discovered that I've become very sensitive to mold. Older buildings are loaded with it. Even if there's no mold in your unit, the ventilation systems will pick it up from the basement and circulate it through the building. (I have a problem with this at my office).
  15. Hi Lizard! "Over-doing it" is all relative, based upon your fitness level. I know some hard-core weightlifters who say that if you DON'T get nauseous (or, preferably, throw up!) when exercising, you're not training hard enough. Do you get nausea at other times, or only when exercising? If it only happens when you exercise, it's probably not...
  16. Hi Robyn, Are you taking any supplements besides the l-glutamine and copper? For immunity/cold prevention, I've found that nothing works better than good old vitamin C. I take 2 grams per day, 1 g. with breakfast and 1g. dinner. It's also one of the most inexpensive supplements out there, but it pays to get a premium product: look for one that is...
  17. If you're looking for something with Vitamin C, I recommend Effer-C by NOW Products. All flavors are labeled as gluten-free. If you're looking for an electrolyte capsule, I recommend Endurolytes by Hammer Nutrition. It's a capsule of sodium, potassium, magnesium, etc. that matches ratios in your body. It's used by distance runners and it's labeled...
  18. What kind of dosage are you all taking?
  19. Were they Fritos brand corn chips? Lays products have a CC problem -- they're made on shared lines with gluten-containing products. I was having a gluten problem that I eventually traced to Lays potato chips
  20. For those of you taking probiotics: How often do you take them? What dosage? Do you take them with food or on an empty stomach? Thanks!
  21. Hi tee, I've lived in downtown Minneapolis since 1990. You will be smack in the middle of downtown, so there certainly won't be a lack of places to eat. Here's a few places I've had good experiences that are within easy walking distance of where you'll be (and some are even on the skyway). Local restaurants: Murray's Steak house -- a Minneapolis landmark...
  22. I definitely get an increased appetite when I get glutened; I can't stop eating! Red skin, too -- all over, not just my face. Back before I went gluten-free, I couldn't sweat at all. As I've healed, I begun to sweat more normally. And whenever I get glutened, I'm so tired and foggy that sex is the last thing on my mind. . . . I've never heard of any...
  23. Most doctors are idiots. Greedy idiots. Both the blood test and endoscopes/biopsies have a high number of false negatives. The blood test assumes you're eating 10 pieces of bread per day; if you're not, you'll probably test negatives. Biopsies are random pokes into your intestines. If they happen to miss the damaged areas, the test is negative. The...
  24. I'm not a pet owner, but those of you interested in celiac disease in pets should check out a website by "Dogtor J". He's a celiac who also happens to be a vet. He has a lot of insight into celiac disease in animals (did you know that celiac disease is common in Irish Setters?)
  25. I'm in the same boat -- no gluten or dairy, but a serious weight trainer. I've been using Nutrabiotic Rice Protein. Whole Foods carries it. It tastes nasty, but it doesn't make me sick.
