Welcome to the forum, AIW! Have you been officially diagnosed with celiac disease? Celiac disease is the only known cause for DH but I was wondering if you have also had either celiac antibody testing done or endoscopy with biopsy or both? Have you begun a gluten-free diet yet and if so, how long have you been on it? If you intend to pursue other...

Technically speaking, RMJ is correct. Celiac disease is also known as "gluten sensitive enterophathy". But still, there are those with celiac disease who are the outliers and don't have enteric involvement but do have DH. I do not think it would be correct to isolate DH from celiac disease since the vast majority of suffers have both together. But that is...

DH and villi blunting of the small bowel lining are both manifestations of celiac disease. The vast majority of celiacs have villi blunting. A smaller percentage also have DH. Still a smaller percentage have only DH. We don't really know why there is this variation but suffice it to say we are all different and our immune systems will not all react in the...

Wondering if there’s anyone else like me
trents replied to Jamie678's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
No, it is not true that most celiacs "get so sick that they avoid it completely". That is a misconception. Most do not get very sick from consuming gluten until after they have been gluten free for a significant time. Jamie678, you need to quit making excuses and buck up! Millions of celiacs around the world are in your same situation and manage to pull... -
Do I Have Celiac And Best Test
trents replied to WhatsTheDealiac's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Sounds like you were in fact eating enough gluten to generate valid tests results. I don't have DH and so I'm not that familiar with what it looks like but there may be other skin diseases that look a lot like it. You need to get a biopsy from a dermatologist to confirm. -
Do I Have Celiac And Best Test
trents replied to WhatsTheDealiac's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Just to make sure, I'll ask this question: Were you eating regular amounts of gluten (2 slices of wheat bread or the gluten equivalent) most days in the two months leading up to the antibody testing? If so, there is no indication from the test numbers that you have celiac disease. You could be one the small percentages of people with celiac disease that have... -
Do I Have Celiac And Best Test
trents replied to WhatsTheDealiac's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
WhatstheDealiac, you posted no reference ranges with the test result so we can't say much about the results until you do. Every lab uses different reference ranges. There is no standard. You only have a short time windows to edit a post so you'll have to post all those numbers again along with the reference ranges. If you have DH you have celiac disease... -
Do I Have Celiac And Best Test
trents replied to WhatsTheDealiac's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
If you don't plan on getting an endoscopy/biopsy for confirmation of celiac disease (or as a further diagnostic step if the imaware antibody tests are inconclusive) then you can start the gluten-free diet any time. If you are entertaining the idea of further testing then hold off. It is a good idea to repeat antibody testing in 6 months or a year to see if... -
First of all, let's discuss some terminology as I'm not sure you and your physician are using some terms the same way that I would and many others in the gluten disorders community. On this forum, tend to use the term "gluten intolerant" as an umbrella term to refer to both celiac disease and NCGS (Non Celiac Gluten Sensitivity). NCGS is often referred...

NEW TO CELIAC DISEASE
trents replied to Slayxbella's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Flow charts and decision trees are great as long as the data is up to date. But most of us on this forum will attest to the fact that this is seldom the case. The medical community in general is pretty behind the curve when it comes to knowledge of gluten related disorders. -

Which Frozen Vegetables are Gluten-Free at Whole Foods?
trents commented on Jefferson Adams's article in Gluten-Free Foods & Beverages
Not necessarily, I would think. Though gluten may not be intentionally added as an ingredient in spices, cross contamination is more likely than with frozen vegetables as the equipment used to dehydrate, grind an process spices may also be used to process wheat/barley/rye in other of their food products. The point the article is making is that frozen vegetable...- 2 comments

NEW TO CELIAC DISEASE
trents replied to Slayxbella's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
It is a misconception that celiacs will necessarily be underweight. Many of us were not, even before going gluten-free. Some celiacs will just consume more calories trying to make up for poor nutrient absorption. The caloric part of nutrition doesn't seem to be affected as much by damage to the villi. -

If the inflammation is low grade it may not produce symptoms but still damage villi over time. -
Welcome to the forum, cstutz! First, DH is definitive for celiac disease. There is no other known cause of DH. Second, most all of your antibody tests were strongly positive, despite your total IGA being low. Low total IGA will lower the numbers of individual IGA antibody tests. You have many classic symptoms of celiac disease, including constipation...

GliadinX and similar products are designed to neutralize small amounts of gluten like you would get from cross contamination. -
Im back from the doctors heres my issue with gluten
trents replied to Lindquist's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
To add pictures you would need to start a new post as there is a time limit on editing any existing post. So, sounds like you need to invest in a gluten free high quality B-complex vitamin product, zinc supplement and Betaine HCl with pepsin (for the low stomach acid). Low stomach acid inhibits the absorption of zinc and other minerals, by the way, such... -
Grey hair with celiac disease? I'm only 27.

You should probably be taking some high potency vitamin and mineral supplements to offset the deficiencies that inevitably accompany celiac disease. -
NEW TO CELIAC DISEASE

Actually, I researched my own question and it's technically illegal to propagate your own hookworms in the USA. But I doubt that would be high on the cops' agenda. Look at "Warnings and Disclaimer" here: https://www.foodsmatter.com/natural_medicine_comp_therapies/helminthic_therapy/articles/how_i_maintain_vibrant_hookworm_colony.pdf -

I scanned the wiki link you gave. Couldn't tell for sure but providers' payment guidelines gave clues as to where they are located. Doesn't look like there are any worm providers in the USA, maybe one in Mexico. Looks kind of spendy as well. I wonder if you can grow your own. -

I edited my previous post and my edit must have been in progress when your reply was in progress. How long after introduction of the worms does it take for the therapy to be effective? -

trents replied to Slayxbella's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
If someone was interested in trying this hookworm therapy for celiac disease, how do you go about finding a practitioner who will administer it and do follow-up? I mean, I suppose do it yourself hookworm kits are not yet available on Amazon. Also, dixonpete, in your experience, how long does it take for the therapy to be effective once these critters... -
NEW TO CELIAC DISEASE
trents replied to Slayxbella's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I read a recent update on the hookworm treatment and the results are far from consistent. They are looking at the variables that might effect outcome and also trying to figure out why and how the mechanism works (at least sometimes) so as to be able to deliver it in a different way. -
CRP Testing in Celiacs
trents replied to huttons16's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Hearing about how you improved on an anti-inflammatory focused diet (FODMAP?) I would suggest researching MCAS (Mast Cell Activation Syndrome) and histamine intolerance. These two are closely related. In the meantime, you have some clues about triggers it seems like as you have experienced remission of symptoms on a focused diet. I cannot do alcohol. It triggers...
