ARCHIVED Masa Harina?
munchkinette replied to GlutenFreeManna's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I use Maseca, which is labeled as gluten free. The company does produce wheat flour, but I don't know about the same factory. Based on their lengthy website on gluten-free foods and celiac disease, you can at least be confident that they will know how to answer your questions. ARCHIVED Coupons?
munchkinette replied to bmichelle's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
They just posted the July coupons for Amazon. I usually buy Bob's Red Mill stuff from Amazon because the prices can be better. This month they have Tasty Bites on sale. I don't know about all the flavors, but a lot of them are gluten-free (and labeled as such). I can't post the link for some reason, but if you go to the main page, click on the Grocery... -
ARCHIVED Insomnia Because I'm Peeing So Much
munchkinette replied to munchkinette's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Good note on the processed food. I had a lot this weekend, but in general, I eat very little processed or restaurant food. I haven't been checked for diabetes lately, but I remember all my levels being normal when I had my last physical exam last summer. That's a good idea about getting my labs done now. I have done a sleep study and I know I have very mild... -
ARCHIVED Insomnia Because I'm Peeing So Much
munchkinette posted a topic in Related Issues & Disorders
I'm not sure if this is related to the gluten-free diet, or maybe too much of a replacement food, or something unrelated altogether. Basically, I'm a mess because I can't get enough sleep. I'm up 3-5 times per night peeing. This isn't just the urge to pee, followed by one ounce of urine. This is more like the release of major water retention during the... -
I think it's great that you are teaching about saving. In terms of increasing allowance, what about work opportunities? I grew up in a fixer upper house that was, quite frankly, falling apart. We didn't really get a real allowance for basic chores, but my mom always gave us opportunities to earn money around the house. When we needed to paint an entire room...

ARCHIVED Bread Maker
munchkinette replied to glutenfreegirl's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
They are just the regular Whole Foods brand corn tortillas. They aren't the 365 ones from the factory, they are the ones made in house. They have them near the prepared foods section which is also the bakery section at my store. I suspect that cross contamination may be an issue for some people, but I have NEVER had a problem with the WF prepared stuff. ... -
ARCHIVED What Did You Eat Today?
munchkinette replied to sb2178's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I'm on the Paleo Diet right now, but I'm still eating a little bit of rice before I run. This is actually a lot more than I usually eat, but I got glutened last week. Luckily I've been able to manage my post-glutening binging to not eat muffins and chocolate. Breakfast: -Brown sticky rice (pre run) -Leftover chicken -Apricots Lunch: -Vegie... -
ARCHIVED Bread Maker
munchkinette replied to glutenfreegirl's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
I used mine twice, then sold it. The benefit of a bread machine is that it does a lot of the kneading for you, but most gluten free bread mixes don't require kneading. I suggest trying a bunch of different bread mixes. I also make a lot of sandwiches with the thick homemade tortillas from the deli section at whole foods. The only premade bread I think... -
Open Original Shared Link I found this while trying to figure out what I could make with their sweet brown rice, which cooks up like pudding. These recipes look pretty good. They are mostly gluten free, and they actually specify which type of rice works best with the recipe.

ARCHIVED Has Anyone Ever Gained Weight On The Paleo Diet?
munchkinette replied to munchkinette's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
Something interesting happened. I've been on this diet for almost a week now, and I've found that half the fruit I used to eat (apples and citrus) just taste way too sweet to me. I think I'm losing my taste for sugar. I actually threw the apple out half way through because I couldn't handle it. So maybe this diet just takes a while to work properly. I've... -
ARCHIVED gluten-free In Iceland, Finland And Estonia?
munchkinette replied to Coolclimates's topic in Traveling with Celiac Disease
I've only been to Finland and Estonia. Most people in this region speak English very well, but I had my gluten-free travel cards with me just in case. All the waiters in the places I visited knew exactly what I meant as soon as I gave them the travel cards. There are quite a few restaurants in Europe that have symbols next to menu items that indicate gluten... -
ARCHIVED Has Anyone Ever Gained Weight On The Paleo Diet?
munchkinette replied to munchkinette's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
The sugar in the fruit may be an issue. One thing I've noticed though- I may have some issues with greens. I love greens. I've made myself sick eating spinach. I know spinach has a lot of different things in it though... some protein like gluten? Stuff like kale isn't supposed to do that though. I ate a mountain of cooked kale the other day. That might... -
ARCHIVED Has Anyone Ever Gained Weight On The Paleo Diet?
munchkinette posted a topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
I've been putting on a lot of weight lately due to stress. I decided to start the Paleo diet yesterday. I've been counting calories just to see how much I'm eating. I'm pretty sure I'm eating a ton more calories now. I'm eating a lot of vegies and lean meat. I'm trying not to go overboard with fruits (which are unlimited) so I keep it to 3 servings per day... -
ARCHIVED Shrimp Curry - What Flour To Use?
munchkinette replied to sa1937's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
What is shrimp curry made from? We've been looking for gluten-free shrimp paste for a long time. Most of the traditional southeast Asian kinds have wheat flour in them. -
ARCHIVED The Indian Food Thread
munchkinette replied to AlysounRI's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
I was just going to post the same thing. This is the number one hidden gluten containing ingredient in Indian cooking. Frontier brand uses rice flour. Open Original Shared Link You also need to watch out for certain kinds of Dosa mixes. Rava dosa means wheat dosa. Most other Indian cooking is pretty obvious, in terms of what is gluten free. -
I just started training again for another half marathon. It's addictive. My favorite gluten-free gels are Gu (chocolate or coffee flavors only taste good) and cliff shot blocks (which are also luna moons). Sharkies are gluten-free, but waxy and gross. I don't really use the sports drinks, but there are definitely gluten-free options out there. I ran...

I'm not sure where besides online. It's local in the Bay Area, so it's for sale all over the place. I only see the extra dark in a few markets, however. So far this is the only df sf gluten-free GOOD brand I've found. (And last time I emailed them, they said all solid chocolate was gluten-free. Not sure about other products like hot cocoa.)

I've been trying to cut out more soy lately because it makes my skin break out, although I don't think I'm intolerant to it. I just buy the pressurizer bottles like Misto so that I can fill them with plain oil. As for chocolate, I like the Scharffenberger extra dark chocolate. There's no dairy or soy, just chocolate and sugar. It's so much better than...

ARCHIVED Planing A Cruise Any Advice?
munchkinette replied to farmwife67's topic in Traveling with Celiac Disease
I've sailed Royal Caribbean and Norwegian Cruise Lines since going gluten free. I had excellent experiences on both. Royal Caribbean has the standard situation- dining in the main dining room is included in the price and you get the same waiter every time. You then tip the main waiter at the end of the week. For this reason, they get to know you and your... -
ARCHIVED Anyone Else With...
munchkinette replied to SLB5757's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
So you can see constipation on an x-ray? What can you see? I did a google image search, and I'm not sure what I'm looking for. Does it just look like bigger intestines? Or more visible than normal? Also... where does it all go? I mean, that time I was backed up for 10 days, I was big, but not 30 meals big. -
ARCHIVED Anyone Else With...
munchkinette replied to SLB5757's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Yep, another one here. When I get glutened, things don't work for 3-7 days. (My average for all glutening symptoms is about a week.) My record in college was 10 days, even with tons of coffee and exlax. That definitely sucked. That was before I'd heard of probiotics, which are awesome. -
This is what people used to think. I guess they still do. When my grandmother was in her mid 20s (mid 1940s), she went on a special diet because of her "wheat problems." Eventually the doctors told her that she had healed, and that the problems went away, so she went back to a normal diet. This was before people did biopsies. When she died she was almost...

ARCHIVED Tips For Eating While Flying?
munchkinette replied to AKcollegestudent's topic in Traveling with Celiac Disease
Yep. Flying home from Indianapolis two years ago. Flying HOME- meaning nobody cared in San Francisco when I went through security with half my suitcase full of food, including 3 cans of tuna. I started an airport thread at the time, because I was curious if other people had ever been questioned by TSA. -
ARCHIVED Tips For Eating While Flying?
munchkinette replied to AKcollegestudent's topic in Traveling with Celiac Disease
I usually take the pouches of tuna now. I actually got stopped by airport security for tuna in cans, because the water it's packed in counts as a liquid. Not kidding. I often cook and freeze a bunch of stuff for school, because sometimes I'm on campus for 12 hours and have to eat 3 meals in one day there. If I take it out of the freezer in the morning... -
ARCHIVED Tell Me About Fruit Issues (Esp. Pears)
munchkinette replied to munchkinette's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
I didn't realize it was naturally occurring. I cut out gum a while back because I thought I was getting too much extra junk, including sweeteners.
