  1. How did you know what restaurants to go to? Or did you just happen to pick restaurants that had gluten-free menus? My parents live near Chicago, and we will be going there in a few weeks!
  2. Then again, you might do a better job than the bozo in charge now...
  3. Thanks, 2boys4me, that's exactly what I was trying to say. Wonkabar, I apologize for sounding harsh. .
  4. I thought everyone did--I assumed it was the salt content?
  5. coconut sorbet? Wow, does that sound good!
  6. How on earth is your neighbor to know that you don't allow peanuts in the house if you didn't tell her? I have SEVERAL friends with multi-child families where one child is allergic to peanuts and the other is not. They do not have peanut-free houses, and, knock on wood, so far everybody is alive and healthy. I'm not saying that you should allow peanuts...
  7. That is so nice of you!!! Unfortunately, we go down to Pittsbuurgh Music Academy in Carnegie on Saturdays for the kids' music lessons and classes. Where is Sunnybridge again? I know you told me once, but I forget (gluten brain?).
  8. Hi, twinsma--welcome to the board! As you probably know, ADD and ADHD are considered to be on the autistc spectrum. There is a lot of crossover of symptoms between Asperger's Syndrome (mild autism) and ADD/ADHD. There are a lot of autistics who are gluten and/or casein intolerant. There are also some who aren't. See if you can find Lisa Lewis' book...
  9. Julie, "Toxious" is a brilliant description--makes me think of toxemia of pregnancy (aka preeclampsia), where, yes, you retain a ridiculous and dangerous amount of fluid. Along those lines, do you have a home blood pressure monitor? I wonder if your BP goes higher when you are toxicized like that? There may be a connection--this year (the year I got celiac...
  10. I'm noticing tons more gluten-free recipes these days! The heading on this one says, "this pretty orange pie is better than pumpkin pie ever thought about being." Cinnamon-carrot pie 2 cups cooked mashed carrots 1 12-oz can evap whole milk (I bet dairy free people could sub soy sour cream or coconut milk) 1 cup sugar 2 eggs, beaten 1/2 teaspoon salt...
  11. Hi! I remember reading many of you saying what gluten-free products you were able to find at Trader Joe's, but that was before I know there was one coming to Pittsburgh, so I didn't look carefully at what you'd found. Do they have a gluten-free section, or do they tend to spread everything out all over the store like Whole Foods? Any recommendations...
  12. Hmmm, you are making an excellent effort at healthy eating!!! A lot of celiacs react to oatmeal for a couple of reasons: 1)cross contamination (they are processed on the same steels as wheat) and 2) the protein in oats is molecularly very similar to gluten. What screams at me most though, is your heavy use of artificial sweeteners. I know a lot of...
  13. Thank you everybody, for the prayers. DH is going there tomorrow, and we'll see how things go. Laura, I am furious at the doctor on your behalf. I swear, the medical community is so full of total A-holes, and I am convinced that we women are treated like hysterical subhumans by these egotistical, ignorant jerks. The more intelligent and informed we...
  14. I do think that vaccines may be a factor (in addition to the diapers themselves); please read up on them, you might want to consider delaying them or only giving one at a time instead of multiple vaccines. How often are you changing the diapers? I know moms who leave a baby in a diaper for 3-4 hours because it does not feel very wet to them, but if the...
  15. GLUTANO MAKES A KIT-KAT BAR CLONE!!!!!!IT'S CALLED A BREAK BAR, AND IT TASTES EXACTLY LIKE A KIT-KAT!!!!!!!!!!
  16. Rinne, is your mother now off gluten, and does it help at this point? I love the message you left your doctor--good for you! Did she ever get back to you with an apology???? Laura, you deserve a good rest. Your doctor deserves a good kick in the pants.
  17. Now is not the time to worry about losing weight!!! Most women do when nursing--but I didn't, I gained. But I did lose it as soon as I was done breastfeeding. Just make sure you are eating enough protein, go light on the gluten-free bread and cookies, as they have far more fat and calories than the gluteny ones, and make sure you are drinking mostly...
  18. That looks yummy!
  19. My second son was the Rash-man of the family--but his diaper area was not such a problem. It was everywhere else, and it started 24 hours after his 4-month vaccines. They sent us to a dermatologist, who took one look and said, "This is a drug reaction--don't feed him anything but breastmilk til it goes away." It somehow "morphed" into severe blistering...
  20. Oh, Evie, I hope you feel better very soon! Phenergan is an antihistimine--it helps a lot with nausea, but is also a big time knock-out (I slept for 17 hours when I took it). How does it help c diff?
  21. Hi, zoomom, and welcome aboard! Just to clarify--in Jan of '06, did you go ON the South Beach diet, or OFF it? And what are you eating these days?
  22. Hi, Curious 121, welcome aboard! I agree with pretty much everything everyone else has said. Going gluten-free is the easiest, cheapest, and most fail-safe way to a definitive answer. Blood tests for celiac do not have false positives, but they DO have false negatives, plus a number of us on this board have had positives that the doctors did not...
  23. Yes, it is! Can't remember the name of the book it was in, but it was full of silly little poems like that, very cute! It's GoodNews/BadNews time. The bad news is that my MIL is very ill, and, as she's nearly 98, she may be on her way "upstairs," so to speak. The good news is that she has had nearly 98 very good years (with a few tough ones in the...
  24. Can you have corn? How about Fritos--corn, oil and salt, those are the only ingredients!
