  1. I wonder if the barbarian children are far more prevalent in the suburbs? I grew up with many suburban barbarians, and I have observed much emotional and some physical cruelty amongst my children's peers. For that matter, I see all kinds of behaviors in the workplace that I would never have dreamed that I'd see past junior high.
  2. Hi, Hannahsue, I only just saw this thread. I'm so glad you decided to pull her, I agree with everybody else, sounds totally abusive. Is there a Suzuki violin program in your area? Most of them have some kind of scholarship available. It would probably involve a 15-30 minute lesson plus a 30 minute group class each week. She would be intellectually...
  3. (scratching head) Is there a decimal point missing? 1.60 and .80, maybe? Otherwise I can't figure out his math....
  4. It's kind of like ingesting arsenic--sure, cutting back ought to help some. But do you really want to be ingesting ANY?
  5. Smoked salmon has gluten? Oh, crap (literally), something else that has often (but not always)given me D. Who'd have thunk it? Susan, I was thinking that it's hard enough for the rest of us to convince the medical community that our D and rashes are real reactions to gluten. Heck, I went years not even NOTICING my own digestive reactions--never...
  6. Susan, Life has NOT passed you by!!! You are still here living it! And I feel VERY blessed to have "met" you, and there are many, many people (and dingoes) you have yet to meet! And you will have an effect on them--and therefore on their children and grnadchildren and great-greatchildren and.... What would you like to do with your life that you are not...
  7. In case the swinging arm thing doesn't work, maybe this will. Someone apparently got thoroughly sick of telemarketers, and made the following website: (it's hilarious) Open Original Shared Link
  8. Susan, are you up for an experiment? My physical therapist swears that swinging your arms when walking releases endorphins and other good chemicals. I never bothered to look it up, but made a big effort to swing my arms after she told me that (it was an effort as I had major mangling of one shoulder, very painful, arm did NOT want to swing). Maybe it was...
  9. Thanks so much! What do the lecithin granules do? (And where do you buy them?)
  10. I make pretty much the same dressing but with lime juice instead of the lemon, and I also add some chopped pickled sushi ginger. I'm getting hungry....
  11. Wait a minute--4 tablespoons IS 1/4 cup, isn't it? THen it was the right recipe after all. I am still stymied.
  12. AHA!! The link you provided goes straight to the non-batter version, then--requires only 4 tablespoons of oil plus 2 reserved for the pan. No wonder.
  13. Thanks so much for the link, Judy. I wonder if the reason I never developed fibro to begin with (at least, not yet, knock on wood!) is that I swim and go to the chiropractor anyway! And now the gluten-free diet.... I checked out the fibro threads on your dailystrength board and was very surprised that I couldn't find the gluten-free diet mentioned anywhere...
  14. Would your dad feel a little less stressed if you could reassure him that they just want to come quietly in for a few minutes to bring him (a picture they drew) (some pretty flowers) (a Teddy Bear) (a soft blanket) (a video of hi favorite sports team) or something like that, and then your husband could take them to a playground while you sit with your dad...
  15. Thank you, Dionne! These are a great start!
  16. Mike, I tried your recipe, and it tasted very good--but I ended up adding nearly half a cup of water to make it something like a very very very very thick pancake batter--and it still wasn't thin enough to be even close to pourable. did I do something wrong, or is something missing from the recipe? Even with the extra half cup of water, it was still very...
  17. That's very interesting--my usualy complaint about the breads I make is either that they don't rise at all or they rise and fall (except for Annalise Roberts' bread recipes, but she doesn't proof the yeast at all,w hich is interesting). Would you mind very much posting a specific recipe? What kind of flour do you use and how much?
  18. Let's flood him with emails! Open Original Shared Link
  19. well, Hell's Bells, let's ALL email him about doing a gluten-free show!!!! He oughta be interested in it, the scientificness and all....
  20. Yes! Yes! I love ALton Brown! Even my husband likes Alton Brown (my husband is a chemist, that's gotta be a factor)! Hey--we need to get Alton Brown to do a show about gluten-free baking!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  21. Where do I sign up? Camp Rachelville--you know, there's gotta be some kind of way we can make a retreat for ourselves like this, take turns cooking delicious gluten-free food and ironing pillowcases. It can be done. It'd make a great movie, too--"the Sisterhood of the Traveling Xanthan Gum" (Well, it sounds better than the Sisterhood of the Traveling...
  22. Betsy, what a great, super-organized post!! I think Scott should put this on the Celiac.com home page!!!!! Only thing I'd add is, fish is such a super-healthy and gluten-free food, and so easy for the babies to eat and digest. I would suggest adding that in (avoiding obvious problematic ones like tuna and shellfish). I think very few people have problems...
  23. It's even cheaper and easier to make meatballs either with no bread crumbs at all (works just fine, bread crumbs are just a way to make the meat feed a few more people), or with potato flakes (use the exact amount as the amount of bread crumbs specified in your favorite recipe, works great!).
  24. I've done minute rice (they do make a brown rice, too) by using an immersion coil in a ceramic coffee cup--that takes up very little space in the luggage! But sometimes immersion coils burn out, so you need to carry a spare.
  25. Judy--thanks, I would love that! Ursula, just reading about your experiences makes my body ache! I'm so glad you found the answers, and I'll be especially interested to see what my friend makes of your story. She might be especially interested in you--her middle son is an Aspie.
