ARCHIVED The Handsome Little Man In My Avatar
Fiddle-Faddle replied to plantime's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Obviously, the man is in total denial. People like that need an official note or conversation with the doctor before they will believe it. They never believe moms or grandmas--I think it is a form of looking down on women. -
ARCHIVED Scared Of The Endoscope
Fiddle-Faddle replied to rutland's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Everybody has posted very good advice. Mine, however, will be from the opposite perspective. It IS an invasive procedure. Not as invasive as open-heart surger, but invasive nonetheless. Even twilight sedation is risky (that is what causes the risk of cardiac arrest). Yes, it's a breeze for most people--but so is gluten. Yes hundreds of people have... -
ARCHIVED Celiac And Chicken Pox
Fiddle-Faddle replied to FeedIndy's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Over half our elementary school came down with chicken pox last year. The principal refused to say how many kids were affected, and downplayed and hushed up the whole thing. I only found out how many there were at one point because the county health nurse called to follow up on our son, and I asked her point-blank how many kids SHE knew about from our school... -
ARCHIVED Gingerbread Emergency For School
Fiddle-Faddle replied to 2Boys4Me's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
I could be wrong, but I think gingerbread houses are actually made either from ginger snap dough baked in a sheet, or even graham crackers. I thought they were more for decoration and weren't supposed to be eaten, but I could be wrong. gluten-free doyughs do tend to be more crumbly and fall-apartish. Seems to me that the teacher ought not to be planning... -

I had exactly the same problem with my Sharp vacuum cleaner, which I loved because it was so quiet--couldn't find filters for it (or even bags) ANYWHERE. Ended up ordering them from the manufacturer, and I got so mad that all the new bags (I think I ordered 20 bags) and filters cost so much ($60!!! ), I went out and bought a second vacuum cleaner for $... -
I'm sorry, Jaten, I didn't mean to imply that Nini's idea/recipe wasn't great--just that #1) it is not affordable for me (I have a family of 5, all hungry), and #2) I think there is a way to exactly duplicate the mix far more affordably. These are the ingredients of the quick mix: Ingredients: Brown rice flour, white rice flour, cornstarch, powdered...

ARCHIVED Has Pregnancy Reduced Anyone's Reactions?
Fiddle-Faddle replied to alexisb's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Actually, for me, pregnancy was the first clue for me (in retrospect) that something wasn't right GI-wise. I had hyperemesis with all 3 pregnancies, and I now suspect gluten to have had a major involvement in that. I dutifully tried to eat crackers all the time, and of course, they wouldn't stay down! Hardly anything else did, either. What did stay... -
ARCHIVED My Dr. Prescribed Zelnorm
Fiddle-Faddle replied to super-sally888's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
If it is gluten that you are reacting to, then you need to be aware that most soy sauces contain wheat (sorry if I'm repeating what you already know--it took me a while to figure that one out). What are your typical lunches? I tend to react the same way if I have a high-carb (even if the carbs are gluten-free), low-protein lunch. It must be so frustrating... -

Fiddle-Faddle replied to Rachel--24's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
Rachel, thank Heavens your kitty is okay! Maybe he could come with you to your mom's next time? Do you have a box fan or a window fan? You could put it in the window and turn it on high and blow lots of nice fresh air in (leave the bedroom door open and a window open somewhere else in the house so the bad smelly air leaves the bedroom). Yes, you need... -

Fiddle-Faddle replied to Rachel--24's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
Okay, my dear: Not only do you need to change the filter, but if you don't change it every couple of months, you should vacuum it with the crevice attachment EVERY week!!!!! I'm not kidding, it makes a huge difference. So that means your mom is probably due to change the one she replaced already, or at least vacuum it. You also need to contact... -
Here's what I use: gluten-free Pancake/Waffle Mix (BULK) 2 cups brown rice flour 2 cups white rice flour 2 cups potato starch 1 cup tapioca flour 1 cup cornstarch 4 Tablespoons baking powder 8 Tablespoons sugar 2 teaspoons salt 4 teaspoons xanthan gum Mix it all together, and store it in something airtight. For pancakes, mix...

Well, that's certainly better than 7 bucks! I think my local grocery thinks it's doing us a huge favor by offering anything gluten-free at all, but I refuse to let them hold my bank account hostage for something that I can whip together in 2 minutes! Come to think of it, even $2.50 for a bag of pancake mix that only makes one batch is awfully pricey...
-
I don't see anything magical in the ingredients in their mix--can't we mix up the same ingredients ourselves and not go broke buying pancake mix? I don't mean to diss Glutenfree Pantry--I just get angry when I see them charging 7 bucks for about 50 cents worth of ingredients. Or is it my local grocery store who is marking it up that high?

The gluten-free subway sandwich bread really IS a multigrain bread. It just so happens that none of those grains are wheat! (Millet and corn both classify as grains, don't they?) I'm not kidding, even my gluten-eating family scarfs it down every time I make it! I can't remember--did you have any bloodwork that indicated a problem with gluten? -

Buy Annalise Roberts' Gluten-Free Baking Classics. All her recipes are amazing--cakes, cookies, and BREADS!!!! She uses a mix of millet flour, sorghum, potato starch, cornstarch, and tapioca starch. The recipes are really easy (no kneading!!!), and you can double them. The subway sandwich bread recipe is unbelievable--it tastes kind of like a really... -

Oh, he IS adorable! I think a gluten-free diet is very easy to manage. It can be tough if a child is used to eating tons and tons of crackers, though. The place to start is for momma to write a list of everything he eats and drinks--and how much--in a day. Then we take the list and make suggestions for modifying it! -

Good morning, RAchelvillians! (Rachelvillains?) Rachel, I lie awake at night trying to figure out what's going on with you! You mentioned the heat going on. THis is such a long shot and so simple, it's ridiculous, so it's probably way off base, but do you have an air filter on your heater? I think they are 11" x 16", and have cardboard edges, they... -

Andrea sent this to me a while back: The NVIC website is at www.nvic.org. You can subscribe to their newsletter updates there. Below is the one I got this morning. National Vaccine Information Center Newsletter e-NEWS "Individuals have a duty to prevent harm to others in the population," said Diekema. "Vaccination programs exist to reduce harm... -

Fiddle-Faddle replied to debmidge's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
Thanks, Debmidge! I don't know that there is a preferred spelling--I have seen so many different spellings, I'm not sure I know which spelling I use! (Of course, that could be brainfog...) -

I don't know specifically that mercury can cause high fevers, but a common vaccine reaction is very high fever--don't know if that is the vaccine itself or the mercury preserving it. Do babies and children still get high fevers from vaccines now that most are made without mercury> I don't know that you can rule out mercury or Lyme at this point; seems... -

My oldest got the chicken pox vaccine--and he was the only child in the family to get chicken pox. In fact, most of the elementary school seemed to have it--when I spoke with the county health nurse, she said I was the 62nd mom she had had to contact whose child had been reported as having it, and that's about half the school right there--but it was kept... -

Fiddle-Faddle replied to Rachel--24's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
I'm not against the principle of vaccines--I do think the polio vaccine did far more good than harm, even taking SV-40 into account. But 26 vaccines by the age of 18 months? And vaccinating newborns within hours of birth for--hepatitis? Something is definitely wrong there. And there are no long-term studies indicating the safety of so many vaccines. ... -
ARCHIVED Celiac Disease: Not Just A Gi Problem
Fiddle-Faddle replied to Sophiekins's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Hi, Sue, and welcome! You might want to check out the gazillion-page "OMG--I might be on to Something" thread--several people on there do have Lyme disease as well as celiac, and they have been doing an amazing amount of research and posting it on that thread!
