  1. Just had another thought--you mention that she always treated you like a partner. Could it be that, as you are entering motherhood yourself, you are upset that you never had a proper mother-child relationship as a child, and , now that it is actually appropriate to be in a kind of adult partnership with your mother, you are unwilling to enter that because...
  2. If my mom asked me for financial advice, I would be happy to either give her advice if I could think of something helpful, or make an apointment for her with a financial planner, and go with her if necessary. Sounds to me like you are trying to make "I just don't think that is my place" as the focus when really, the problem is the relationship itself....
  3. I find that the gluten-free bread-machine mixes at my local grocery are $5.79-$5.99, and I still have to add eggs, milk, oil, etc. It's still ridiculously expensive. I can buy white rice flour, tapioca flour, potato starch, and cornstarch at the Asian grocery for 69 cents a pound, and it only takes 5-10 minutes to mix 9 cups of flour mix, which so far I...
  4. I bet it differs from store to store . Lately, I've been getting the rotisserie chickens from Costco, so it is also possible that I mixed the two up in my mind our Sam's Club moved 5 miles further away from me ) Better be safe than sorry--check at your local store!!!!! A slightly more time-consuming way around this is to roast your own chicken...
  5. I make it from scratch, using Annalise Roberts' gluten-free Baking Classics, but her recipes don't use the bread machine.
  6. Here is the only part where I can't help pitying your mother. I would be devastated if I asked ANYBODY I know fairly well for advice and heard them reply (in not so many words), "I don't care what you do." Which is obviously what you are thinking. If somebody close to you is asking you for advice, I feel that it DOES become your place to advise them,...
  7. We used to have a cat like that, who was mine before the marriage. The one time I tried closing the door on him, he freaked out and THREW himself at the door, crying. Over and over. Needless to say, that woke us up worse than being walked on. Our solution was to give him extra attention during the day and to wear him out at bedtime as much as possible...
  8. How would you handle this sort of question if it were from a colleague (you have to treat colleagues with respect if you want to keep your job) rather than from your mother (where there is all sorts of long-term emotional baggage on both sides)? Most of us tend to be much more patient and polite with annoying colleagues than we are with annoying family members...
  9. I have not had problems with gluten-related depression; however, I am convinced that it DOES cause it in many people. I was very disappointed in Dangerous Grains. I felt it made a lot of interesting points, but failed to offer documentation, and it was generally not well-written or well-organized. We need someone to write a better book! There are such...
  10. I don't have any helpful advice to offer , but just wanted to send extra strength, patience, and good thoughts your way .
  11. May the new year bring health and happiness to you both!
  12. Nancy, I'm so sorry you're feeling so sad right now. Sounds like your friend has dug herself into a hole--it may not be possible to ever trust her again, at least, not until you find out what is really going on. In the meantime, steer safely clear of her (without necessarily slamming the door for good), and permit yourself to mourn. If you tell me what...
  13. What is it about January that makes us all sick? I developed that DH rash in January, and the year before that, I had bronchitis and pleurisy in January. What the ????? is it with January?
  14. I haven't had a cold or virus (that I know of) for 2 years now. Of course, now that I've put that in writing, I'll get sick tomorrow!!
  15. Is there any relationship between Dh and the bartonella rash? Are celiacs with DH (or gluten-intolerant people with DH) actually celiacs who also have babesia or Lyme?
  16. Many people here have noticed that, even thought they did not have obvious digestive problems before going off gluten, they did have them when they tried to go back on. Hmmmm....
  17. Such intelligent, thoughtful advice from so many people! I learn so much onthis board, it is amazing. The only thing I can add is to remember that she is not choosing to be an evil, horrible hag--she can't help her own limitations and/or issues and/or mental illness (if that is the case). That doesn't make it any easier for you, though, does it?
  18. You know? You ask God if he hates you, if he can hear you, because you know he is up there! You cannot figure out what you did to deserve this punishment called your daily life. On the other hand, you know maybe he is saving something better for you. Thanks for the kind words and inspiration. Sincerely...
  19. All good advice from Georgie, except--my understanding is that night sweats is a symptom of hypERthyroid, rhater than hypOthyroid??????? Also, even though Georgie's info is, to my knowledge, accurate, it is possible that thyroid isn't the issue here. Wish I knew all the answers.
  20. P.S. Congrats on the pregnancy!
  21. Oh, how frustrating for you. You sound very sensitive and understanding of her situation (YOU ARE NOT A HORRIBLE DAUGHTER!), so I probably don't need to point out that she sounds terribly lonely. It also sounds like she does not have good social skills,a t least, not with you! Very tough situation for you. The following is just me thinking out loud...
  22. Wish I could remember where I read this, but I did read that it doesn't matter if it's sunny or rainy as long as you are outdoors during daylight hours. It makes sense, because you CAN be sunburned on a totally grey, cloudy day. The same holds true for adjusting to a new time zone, by the way--spend as much time as possible outdoors during daylight hours...
  23. Depression is definitely a chemical situation! But the sunshine and exercise help you make those chemicals so that you either need less of the pharma verisons or (hopefully) none at all. If you can get out of bed to get to the doctor, you can get out of bed to walk around the block. It's the getting out of thehouse that is the hardest part. When...
  24. Something else to consider is the fact that people on this board have been denied insurance because of positive biopsies. If you already know that gluten is the cause of the problem, then a biopsy only makes the doctor and insurance company richer; it doesn't necessarily tell you anything that you don't already know, as, unless your villi are uniformly damaged...
  25. I just looked up bread-and-butter pudding--oh, does that look scrumptious! I don't see why it wouldn't work with plain old gluten-free bread, especially if it's not a heavy bread. You've just inspired tomorrow's breakfast!
