  1. I'm sorry you're having such a tough time! I bet that the last thing you feel like doing is getting up and going outside for some exercise--but it's probably the very best thing for you. If you aren't already doing this, please try to get outside for a good hour of walking (or jogging, if you are up to it), preferably when the sun is out. It really has...
  2. Merry Christmas, Hawkfire! I am glad that the AP worked so well for you. I will keep it in mind if I ever develop arthritis symptoms. As for spreading the word, I'm not even gonna try--everybody I know already thinks I am crazy for being gluten-free! However, I bet there are arthritis support groups in your area, or maybe some on-line ones? And does...
  3. It was when I was in 7th grade, actually. My mother didn't buy the idea that acne was caused by chocolate (didn't eat it then), french fries (wasn't eating these, either) , or hormones, so she did a total elimination diet on me. I ate nothing but rice, plain chicken breast, plain hamburger meat, toast (this was decades before I had any discernable problem...
  4. I was told to avoid all potential allergens (wheat, citrus, dairy, nuts, eggs, strawberries, etc) until one year and shellfish for two years. This was before I had any known problem with gluten, too, and I have no other food issues. I don't see why introducing wheat at 6 months would be beneficial in ANY way.
  5. Has he been tested for diabetes and thyroid? (I saw that you wrote that everything in the bloodwork tested as normal, but wasn't sure it they tested for d and t specifically.)
  6. There is one brand of nitrite-free bacon available, but I have never seen nitrite-free hot dogs or ham. Maybe someone else has?
  7. Sal, the only thing that EVER caused acne for me was sodium nitrite--which is in bacon, hot dogs, many (but not all) sausages, ham, and processed, smoked deli meats like smoked turkey, pastrami, smoked, chicken, etc. You probably aren't eating any of these, but I thought I'd mention it just in case. Merry Christmas!
  8. I just wanted to stop by and wish everybody a very merry Christmas!!!
  9. Hi, Marlene, I'm sorry you're having such a tough time right now. Have you considered other food intolerances in addition to gluten? Many here are also intolerant to casein; lactose intolerance can cause similar symptoms as well and is extremely common even in people without autoimmune disorders. I have read here that many celiacs continue to have...
  10. Stainless steel has been "hot" for nearly a decade--which means that very soon, the manufacturers are going to come out with something new that everyone is going to want--and then stainless steel will become the "dated" look, kind of like white is now. On the other hand, you said you love the look, so that's what's really important. I actually insisted...
  11. The only things I kept down were fresh strawberries and Corn Chex (this was before I had a known problem with gluten, but you could find gluten free corn chex, they're called "Corn Crunch-ems," and they taste exactly like corn chex!). I TRIED to eat saltines because everyone kept telling me to. Now I understand why they wouldn't stay down!
  12. Rachel, I wonder if the early stage of mold sensitivity is to notice it when nobody else would? That would certainly be me--I notice the taste of it in fruit (and I wash fruit VERY well) and breads when nobody else, not even my kids do. And I notice the smell of mold or mildew (like in the washing machine if I forget to transfer a load of laundry to the...
  13. Woo-HOO, Amy! MomtoClaire, what is your little one eating besides breastmilk (which is always the best, anyway)? Maybe we can help you with some ideas on this? One of my friends was giving her son so much juice everyday, he was too full to eat much, and did much better on milk and water.
  14. Thanks--I'll look for them!!!
  15. You can eat all the pasta you want, anyway! Tinkyada makes gluten-free brown rice pasta that most of us think tastes exactly like regular pasta. You can also go to an Asian grocery staore and get rice stick noodles, which is pretty much the same thing made from white rice flour--doesn't taste quite as wonderful as the brown rice pasta, but good nonetheless...
  16. Welcome, Cyan! I just wanted to suggest that you give the gluten-free diet a try, maybe for a month or so and see if there's a good result. Many of us here tested negative for celiac for a variety of reasons (for example, stupid doctors who didn't know that being gluten-free already screws up the bloodwork). Also, I've read several times that the tests...
  17. Welcome, Spike! My situation is very similar (practially identical!) to yours, except my rash WAS symmetrical and it was on my arms. Thank heavens for the internet (and this board)! A word of caution about an official MD diagnosis: some of the members of this board have been denied life insurance and/or health insurance because of an official diagnosis...
  18. Good luck--I'll think nice thoughts for you Tuesday and Wednesday! (BTW, happy last night of Hanukkah!)
  19. If you could come up with a gluten-free version of Pepperidge Farm Milano cookies, I would be ecstatic!!
  20. Me, too! Me, too@ I am so grateful for all the information. I have no Lyme symptoms (other than the gluten intolerance thing) that I know of, so no point in even asking for a test, but I wouldn't be surprised if I develop them down the road, as I grew up going to summer camp and having lots of bug bites, and I even had a case of cellulitis that...
  21. Susie, I don't know if you are already doing this, but when I wash grapes, I put one drop of dish soap (I use Dawn, don't know if they have that in the UK) in the water and i scrub a littel with my fingers. Then I rinse, really, really, really, really well. That seems to make a huge difference in taste compared to just rinsing with water.
  22. I'm so sorry you're having such a rough time. I only have 3, can't imagine how difficult it must be with 4 and a 50-hour work week on top. Does your husband "get it?" If so, then the easiest thing by far for you would be to make the entire house gluten-free. As for your exhaustion (a 50-hour work week would exhaust anyone without kids!), simplify as...
  23. Is your pediatrician on board with your daughter's diagnosis? If so, it's a good idea to say that the pediatrician says that she can't have ANY gluten, and that the gluten is what caused your daughter's terrible rashes--next step if gluten continues to be ingested is severe autoimmune disorders. I would let the family know ASAP. Dangerous Grains is...
  24. You might have to order them from the manufacturer.
