  1. The 20-month-old son of a friend of mine had a lot of problems with diarrhea, tummy cramping, and poor weight gain. Sounded like celiac to me--but things got much better when they took him off soy milk (he also had gotten breastmilk before starting on soy). You may be lucky and find an intelligent, well-informed, sensible doctor--and I certainly hope you...
  2. I firmly believe that cold medicines are just another effort on the part of the pharm industry to get money out of us. Have you seen how many cold medicines are on the shelves these days? The general public seems convinced that we need cold medicines! Cold medicines do not cure colds. The ones I've tried never made me feel any better. Some...
  3. Here in Pittsburgh, the local dialect leaves out infinitives: instead of saying, "the car needs to be washed," they say, "the car needs washed." Drives me crazy (I'm not from Pittsburgh originally). And, oh, was I horrified when my kids started to do it! Instead of, "y'all," they say, "yunz" or "yinz" (not sure how to spell it). They can't seem...
  4. The best we could say at this point (we're not doctors and we don't have a heck of a lot of information here) is that it's certainly possible! Is Aidan eating a lot of gluten-containing foods right now? Pasta, breads, crackers, cereals, chicken nuggets (well, he's a little young for chicken nuggets, but you never know), goldfish crackers, graham crackers...
  5. Now, just remember--we are all aging at the same rate!
  6. That sounds delicious! Is the sauce pretty much like the sweet General Tso sauces we used to get at the Chinese restaurants? (I loved that sauce!)
  7. Hey, I'm just 20 minutes South of Cranberry! And I see Mamaw's on--she's in BUtler, that's practically next door to you!
  8. Hope things get better for you--sounds very frustrating. I couldn't cradle mine to go to sleep for what seemed like forever--I think that ends up being a bad position for reflux?. They would either nurse to sleep, or fall asleepin the frontpak or sling. If it was the frontpak, I would just lie down (propped up on pillows) with them in it and go to sleep...
  9. I don't know that breastfed babies have a watery stool--I always thought it was more like French's mustard (both color and texture), but it smelled very mild--like buttermilk. Formula stools, though--pee-U!
  10. I like the idea of accupuncture! That's definitely worth a look. Other ideas: have you had your thyroid checked lately? (Sorry if I missed that.) And--what are you eating? I get very tired if I have a lot of carbs, especially the gluten-free breads and cookies. If your blood sugar is zooming up and down, that could be very tiring. Are you getting...
  11. Actually, one of my dearest friends (I've known her for 30 years!) lives in Lexington--she plays in the Lexington Philharmonic and teaches Suzuki Violin through the Lexington Talent Education Association!
  12. So sorry you had the same experience that most of us here have had!!!! If your bloodwork comes back positive for celiac, I would suggest that you write a letter (with a copy to your insurance company) requesting your copay to this doctor be refunded, as you basically had to act as your own MD by insisting on the bloodwork. You might add that his misdiagnosis...
  13. That's where the feeding on one side only really helps, especially if you have a hyperactive let-down (there really is such a thing!). Bascially, that's when your letdown is so strong, it chokes the baby--and it also meants that the baby is getting much more of the thin stuff if they nurse both sides at every feeding (and you might see green diarrhea in...
  14. I know I used to get a soy cream cheese that was quite good--I think it was called "Better than Cream Cheese?" Made by Soy Delicious?
  15. Hi, welcome aboard! My third had reflux, too. If you can keep up with the breastfeeding, it does make a huge difference (you've already found out that she tolerates it best). It can be awfully tough, I know, and sometimes the lactation consultants can be lacking in understanding while you feel like there isnothing else in your life but baby screams...
  16. Oops, Lynne, we sort of hijacked your thread, didn't we? Sorry about that. How are you feeling today? Any better? Were you able to take any good pictures of your neighbor doing ridiculous things? It occurred to me last night--with all the difficulties you have experienced, the wheelchair, and everything--you are still more whole than your pitiful...
  17. Hope your daughter is recovering easily from surgery--sorryto hear about your grandma-in-law. My optometrist says he tells ALL his patients not to sleep in extended-wear contact lenses. Just because the manufacturer claims it's safe to do so does not mean that there are no risks and/or discomforts to be expected! He did say he didn't think there were likely...
  18. YES, PLEASE! !!!
  19. There is unflavored gelatin in one of Annalie Roberts' recipes in addition to yeast and xanthan gum. Not sure if that info helps you...I know guar gum can substitute for xanthan gum, but can you have that?
  20. When my babies were wee small ones, I used to show up at work without realizing that I had baby spit-up on my shoulder. And I would have to pump my milk at intermission, and would invariably end up with either milk spots on my blouse or dribbles on my shoes. I'm sure it was a very charming effect.
  21. I notice you've got depression to deal with on top of everything else! Can you get outside for a walk (even if it's a slow walk) every day? Seriously, I believe that the more time you spend outside, the better you will feel--something to do with the sun (and it works even when it's cloudy or even raining). My physical therapist swears that swinging your...
  22. Rest easy, Lynne--I'm lucky if I comb my hair after I get out of the shower in the morning, and I have almost convinced myself that my white hairs are actually highlights. As for makeup--don't have any, so I don't need to check for gluten! I admit to feeling a pang of wanting to look like the post-makover gals on "What Not To Wear" after the hair-and...
  23. Ya gotta be careful there, too--lots of the "light" ice creams are thickened with wheat starch, and some contain barley malt...
  24. People who have never heard of celiac disease seem to react more appropriately if you tell them that you are allergic to gluten, which is in wheat, rye, barley, and malt (I always say them separately because most people don't know that malt comes from barley). If they ask about it, then it's easier to explain that it' snot a typical allergy but an autoimmune...
  25. Ouch. OUCH! OUCH!! When our new neighbors were moving in across the street two years ago, I brought them freshly baked gluteny brownies and a pitcher of lemonade....
