  1. Wow, this is fascinating--I had a dislocated shoulder, with torn supraspinatus and infraspinatus tendons, plus torn glenoid labrum. This was in January, and it is healing so s-l-o-w-ly, it's extremely frustrating. I'm writing a blog about the recovery process--if anybody is interested, my latest post is at Open Original Shared Link. It's not very...
  2. GERD starting at age 15, increasing in severity until last year, when I went on Nexium (had been on Tums, Pepcid, Zantac, Prilosec,) (Was diagnosed with hiatal hernia in 1993. Had endoscopies in 1997 and 2005. No Barrett's Esophagus, but did have esophageal ulcers both times. Hashimoto's thyroiditis diagnosed in 1989--have been onlevoxyl, levothroid...
  3. There's a store on Banksville (in the South Hills, about 10 minutes from downtown) in the Kuhn's Plaza--they stock a TON of gluten-free stuff, including frozen Kinnikinnick stuff, although the whiute sandwich bread is so good, I'm going to order it direct by the case if I can). I can't remember their name, but if you go to the Kinnikinnick website, you...
  4. Bummer. Will they ship to you if you order in bulk?
  5. I'd kind of like to have someone explain the Altoids thing to me, too....
  6. Consistent exercise makes a huge difference in my mental abillities. Only problem is, I haven't had time for even inconsistent exercise lately....
  7. Hi, gluten-free-AV8r, looks like there's a bunch of us up North. Mamaw is just up the road from you, and I'm just down the road! I never would have dreamed that Bravo did anything gluten-free--that used to be my favorite restaurant in my pre-gluten-free days! I'll have to check it out--I only live a couple of miles from it! Thanks so much for the info...
  8. Hey, Vydorscope, our local market carries prepacked Ben & Jerry's--have you checked yours? (There might be hope....)
  9. I'm a violinist (you might have guessed). I always memorize best aurally--I listen to whatever I'm trying to memorize over and over on a celiac disease before I start to learn it. with my fingers. It doesn't have to be active listening--you can be doing dishes, cooking, working on the computer, whatever. You probably know the theme song for the 6:00 news...
  10. Judy, So sorry to hear about your hideous experience. One doesn't expect to end up feeling violated by the medical professionals one goes to for help! Only helpful thing I can think of (at least, I hope it's helpful) is to drink lots and lots of water--if you're at all dehydrated, your eyes will feel it way before you get thirsty. Hope you feel...
  11. Sorry, Lisa, I wasn't clear. what I meant by age is that until the age of 44 I had no stomach pains or diarrhea that anyone could have associated with celiac; the only thing I've ever had was a DH-type rash (once) and about 30 years of reflux, but that's at least partly explained by my hiatal hernia. The only things I've ever been able to associate with...
  12. Hi, Radman, Actually, I do mean cystic fibrosis. What caught my eye was the similarity in stomach symptoms. I was wondering if the pulmonary stuff could possibly be another expression of celiac the way Dermatitis Herpeteformis is. Hi, Alan, welcome to the forum. As you may have noticed, people to tend to react with great intensity here. I believe...
  13. Also wondered about possible links between celiac disease and CF, and celiac disease and intestinal lymphonas (are all intestinal lymphomas linked to celiac disease?) There was a thread a while back about sourdough converting the gluten, but I didn't follow it all the way through. From what I read, several people said that they didn't react to sourdough...
  14. I like THroat Coat, and a similar tea by Stash called Licorice Tea-very soothing! In fact, I think just about any licorice tea I have tried has been good, and I don't recall reacting to any of them. Good luck!
  15. My 7-year-old used to complain about stomach pains after eating--until I put the whole family on "gluten-lite" (gluten at only one meal a day) so that I woudn't ahve to prepare 2 breakfasts and 1 lunches. Also, his eczema went away.
  16. Question for Radman: Are all intestinal lymphomas linked to gluten intolerance? Also, I asked you a couple of questions on earlier posts, but I don't think you saw them; at any rate, you never answered them. Could you please take a peek back through this thread? Thanks.
  17. I don't think the mucus is in the digestive tract, just the respiratory tract (but I could be wrong).
  18. I just sneaked a look at the lecture my husband is preparing for tomorrow's biochem lecture--the topic is cystic fibrosis. The main symptom is thick, sticky mucus clogging the lungs, and it is caused by an abnormal gene. What caught my eye was something else on the symptom list: 1)ongoing diarrhea or bulky, foul-smelling or greasy stools, 2) huge...
  19. I have mild rosacea--had rosy cheeks all my life, and have just started to notice tiny veins in my cheeks. Hot showers also give me a temporary rash on my chest. I've never tried anything for it, and never thought of the dietary connection. Probiotics sound like a good idea--I'll try that. I hate to hear that eggs might be a trigger-I eat one every...
  20. I find that dark chocolate is very therapeutic for anger--would it exacerbate the collagenous colitis?
  21. Hi, radman, I was actually wondering (don't shoot, guys!) if small amounts of the "right " kind of gluten (fermented, like sourdough) might not only avoid triggering the celiac thing, but also might help avoid the post-celiac-diet high incidence of developing other food sensitivities.... (edit) I mean from childhood in someone who shows no signs of...
  22. I had similar vision-weirdnesses during my first pregnancy (7th and 8th months), but without the passing out. It turned out that I had severe pre-eclampsia, which can be deadly serious. Later, after the birth I had similar visual things which turned into headaches--I was told that they were migraines, caused by hormonal fluctuations. A home blood pressure...
  23. Silly me, I forgot an obvious one--kinnkinnick bread (or toast) might be a good low-allergy way to start--somebody just posted that they gained ltos of weight after eating it. If there are no dairy allergies, you could spread it with lots of butter and jam!
  24. Well, I found a store that sells lots of gluten-free stuff, so I bought $40 worth of gluten-free stuff, and for lunch I had a sandwich on gluten-free BREAD (tasted okay) and a kinnikinnick glazed chocolate doughnut which was delicious. Thing is, I'm not used to those heavy carbs anymore. I felt dopey and sleepy (2 of the 7 dwarves!) all afternoon, and had...
  25. This is probably going to gross some people out, but do you know any moms who are breastfeeding? If they could pump a little extra milk for you, he ought to be able to absorb the nutrients in breastmillk better than any other source. My son was very skinny until his open-heart surgery. I gave my him lots of fatty fish like salmon, high-carb vegies...
