  1. It is a personal decision. You have to weigh the risks of going after a firm diagnosis with the benefits of going gluten-free. There are different ways of looking at it, to be sure, and from my perspective, I can't imagine wanting to poison myself for even one more day, just to get "official confirmation from tests that are less valid as diagnostic tools...
  2. Ken, thank you SO much for sharing what you are seeing with us. You give us hope!!!!
  3. I figure that the fancy expensive gluten-free brands we see in the health food stores are likely repackaged flours from the Asian market anyway (unless they specifically state that they produce their own in a dedicated facility)!
  4. But Rice Dream has undeclared gluten!!!
  5. Do you have a blender or a food processor? Nut butters are simple to make in one of those--just put nuts in, whirl, check to see if it might need a little extra oil, and whirl some more. Nuts are kind of high on the potential allergen list, though, as are strawberries and citrus. Lots and lots of fresh fruit, fresh or steamed veggies, salads, and plain...
  6. Didn't I read here on this board that European scientists recognize several genes as being "celiac genes," while in the US they only recognize 2? At any rate, the US medical community is so far behind on celiac, I don't trust genetics as a way to really rule out celiac--or even rule it in, for that matter. I have seen too many posts here from people who...
  7. Hi, Thumper! I think we have a BamBam on this site, too... Possibilities: D caused by sensitivity to soy D caused by sensitivity to chocolate or caffeine D caused by virus D caused by food-borne bacteria D caused by hidden gluten in food (for example, deli tuna salad often has bread crumbs, "lite" ice cream has wheat starch, soy sauce contains...
  8. In addition to being hit or miss, the endoscopy/biopsy would also be a guaranteed negative for celiac if you are gluten-free (unless you have refractory sprue). In celiacs, the gut heals on the gluten-free diet, so an endoscopy/biopsy would reveal--nothing!
  9. Many here are intolerant to soy--could that be a problem? Is your formula hydrolyzed soy protein? Hydrolyzed protein can still cause a reaction if it is from a source your baby is sensitive to--otherwise, they would just hydrolyze gluten and we could all eat it! There are also some who are sensitive to rice and potatoes, too. Potatoes are in the nightshade...
  10. I don't think it's any great loss--I've always thought Hershey's chocolate had a sour-milk aftertaste, anyway. (HERSHEY'S--I hope you are reading this!!! Chocolate that doesn't taste as good as the competitor's, AND you can't even bother to learn what the ingredients are?? Double shame on you! )
  11. Where are you traveling? I just got back from Europe, where they are WAY ahead of us on the gluten thing. To my surprise and delight, Spain was especially on top of it. I found 2 different brands of gluten-free croissants, umpteen different gluten-free breads, pastas, cookies, pastries, you name it, they had it!
  12. If you want vitamin D, get out in the sunlight (without sunblock, but not between 11 am and 2 pm if you live in a warm climate)!!!!
  13. I disagree with the above poster only because tests for children under the age of 3 years are VERY unreliable. False negatives abound, and then what? Do you assume that baby is not gluten-intolerant or celiac if the test is negative when false negatives are so prevalent? Going off gluten (both you and baby, and kids too, why not?) is FREE, you do NOT...
  14. Would you mind posting a typical day's diet for your son, including every meal, snacks, drinks, everything? That way, somebody might spot something specific and be able to help. I agree, it's most likely something he is eating, but I suppose we should rule out soaps, detergents, fabrics, etc. He might even be allergic to something in his diaper, but...
  15. Chloe, it really doesn't sound like you have a chip on your shoulder. It does sound like the people around you have something MAJORLY wrong with them!!!!! Maybe in some weird, twisted, totally ignorant way, they think they're helping you have more options or something, but they need a major reality/sensitivity/intelligence check. I have had people...
  16. Excellent point! I think it is a combination of delivery and the kind of people you hang out with (your audience). If people are giving you a hard time about this, you are hanging out with the wrong people!!!! (hard to do anything about "M's," though!)
  17. You should have your thyroid levels checked, as that seems to be very common amongst celiacs (to have low thyroid). Rest is very important to milk production, but today's society doesn't exactly allow moms of infants to get any! The best thing to do is to SLEEP WHEN BABY SLEEPS. If you are one of those lucky women who can sleep with your baby, do so...
  18. Hi, Chloe! I have been gluten-free for over two years now. I am one of those who DON'T have severe reactions to cross-contamination--but I am vigilant about being gluten-free, to the point of not going out to eat unless I absolutely have to. At home, I make my own gluten-free everything--bread, cookies, pancakes, chicken nuggets, fish sticks, meat...
  19. I've had both, and while they may LOOK alike, they do not FEEL alike. With shingles, in addition to the unbearable itchy burney oozing blisters, the entire nerve is inflamed. If you have ever had a pinched nerve, you know how painful that is. Now imagine that kind of pain, along a spinal nerve, from the spine all the way to wherever that nerve ends...
  20. Publix? Thanks--I will plug that into Google Maps and see how far from the hotels they are. Gee, I hope there's sun!
  21. Actually, it depends some on how long you have been gluten-free. Your gut may have healed since last summer, and then you might not react to gluten as you once did. For some of us, it takes a while to do damage. When was the last time you had a reaction to accidental gluten? Not trying to burst your bubble, just don't want to see you damage yourself...
  22. Me three! I am amazed that the fake syrup manufacturers are able to convince so many of us that their chemical-laden, artificially-flavored syrups are even worth trying--but they ARE kind of addictive, aren't they? That's because of the high-fructose corn syrup, which literally makes you want more and more and more. It also raises your blood sugar...
  23. Thanks--unfortunately, it will not be practical to have a cooler--we're traveling by bus, and I will have my carry-on and purse--no room for a cooler on a single bus seat. The best I'll be able to manage is an insulated lunchbag (it can fit in my carry-on). I also won't have time to find a grocery store everywhere we go, unless it's within a couple of...
  24. It's tour time again (and I haven't unpacked yet from the last time!!!) This time, we are hitting the above-mentioned cities, and I was hoping some of you experienced Floridians and Florida-visitors might have some recommendations! I am already google-mapping Whole Foods in every city, but will not have access to fridge or microwave, so I'm pretty much...
  25. The tests in kids are VERY inconclusive--the false negative rate is just way too high Really, the best diagnostic tool is to just try a gluten-free diet on them--if you see sudden growth spurts (as well as less stinky poops, fewer tummy aches, disappearance of eczema/reflux, developmental leaps) within the first month, there is your answer. If you see...
