  1. My boys were given the hep b shot when they were 4 hours old. And, no, NOBODY in our family was at ANY risk for it.
  2. whoops, double post!
  3. Hi, everyone in Rachelville! Quick New Year's Drive-by, here! Nice to see you all! The MMR IS repeated, but the only reason it is is because 5% of the people who get it don't mount an immune response, so a second is required for everyone. This is according to Merck's website, BTW--they're the ones who make the MMR. There are no studies indicating that...
  4. Warning: my opinion is going to seem extremely harsh--but it's JMHO, and I'm honestly calling it as I see it. Personally, I think you're better off without either room-mate or husband. Room-mates do not commit to each other for a lifetime, so it's relatively easy to "break up" with them. Husbands, however, ARE supposed to commit to you for a lifetime...
  5. Oh, I'm so excited to read this! I've been trying to make my own curry "roux," but it just doesn't compare! Thanks for posting! I'll look for it!!!
  6. I don't know, Kassandra, I do think that for the most part, GS and Celiac are, at least for all practical purposes, one and the same unless there are other things (like Lyme) going on. If your life can be destroyed by gluten, it doesn't really matter what you call it, especially when there are no other destructive factors going on.
  7. I've been looking, too, as they are hubby's all-time favorite. So far, I haven't had any luck. Sorry!
  8. Forgot to add, if you can find licorice herbal tea (some brands call it "Throat-Coat," that's especially soothing to a poor sore throat.
  9. I'm sorry you are sick! If possible, drink lots of hot liquids (at least 8 ounces every hour--pee those germs down the toilet and flush'em away!)--chicken broth (if you have no energy, just get the kind in the carton, but don't get College Inn brand, it has gluten--read the labels), herbal tea, and hot lemonade (make it from frozen concentrate which is...
  10. Thanks for clarifying about Enterolab--I didn't realize they didn't diagnose celiac, as I never went through them. A GS person, like a Celiac person, SHOULD get better on a gluten-free diet unless there is something else going on causing the gluten sensitivity (like Lyme Disease, mercury toxicity, bacterial infections, systemic yeast infections, all mentioned...
  11. I don't know where you are located, but here in the US, most grocery stores carry soy and rice-based "ice creams," yogurts, cream cheese, and sour cream. You can also have some easy-to-carry gluten-free, dairy-free treats stashed in your purse or in the car so that he can have them. I agree, it's awfully nice to be able to go out to dinner and have dessert...
  12. Even the so-called celiac experts disagree on whether there is always a difference between gluten intolerance and celiac. Since at this point, celiac is only officially diagnosed by either confirming damaged villi of the small intestine, or by a diagnosis of dermatitis herpetiformis (a related rash that you can only get if you have celiac, but most celiacs...
  13. Did you test your son when he was already off gluten? That might be why he tested negative for celiac. However, I would like to know exactly why this enzyme seems to be working! I know MommaGoose wrote what we have all been told--that there is no cure for celiac, and that is certainly true. However, this sounds like something promising in helping people...
  14. If it's after meals, it makes me suspect a sugar problem. Try limiting carbs, especially if you are eating a lot of gluten-free bread, pasta, and cookie substitutes (I know, ya GOTTA at the holidays! But try anyway, and I bet you'll see a big difference.) Also smaller meals eaten more frequently rather than 3 squares.
  15. Catch 22-- I would suggest yogurt to help with bacterial balance in the tummy, but if she is eating dairy (even a small amount), I think that could be preventing healing, as well as the bacterial overgrowth that richard suggests. Maybe someone here can suggest a good probiotic for a 3-year-old? And some of the dairy-free milks DO contain unlabeled gluten...
  16. How old is your daughter? Please don't take this the wrong way, I'm not accusing your daughter of cheating or you of not reading her correctly, but... My oldest has a celiac friend who is 12. He is now cyber-schooled because he was literally unable to control his own eating of gluten. They found out (after months!) that he was sneaking food from other...
  17. You know, I remember saying something similar to someone who had celiac way before I ever had a problem with gluten. I didn't say it because I was so sure I couldn't do it. I said it as a way of expressing sympathy because I did think it must be very difficult. It's obviously a lousy way of expressing support, but that is what I was trying to do, and...
  18. I wonder if it might not be worthwhile making an appointment (and paying the copay) with the doctor who told her she couldn't have it, and discuss her. Give him a list of all the symptoms that went away off gluten, and all that returned after going back on. Don't mention stress. If he brings stress up, give details of how sick YOU used to be, and tell him...
  19. Why is that? With a peanut allergy, they don't wait until you die from anaphylactic shock before they diagnose you as allergic to peanuts--it you have a reaction from eating peanuts, and you DON'T have it when you eliminate peanuts from your diet, everyone knows you are allergic to peanuts. Nobody makes you eat more peanuts to see if you have a worse...
  20. Where did you find the recipe? Are you substituting gluten-free flour for regular flour in a regular (gluteny) recipe? The ratio of flour to butter/sugar looks a bit heavy to me. If it was a gluteny recipe, I'd cut the amount of flour by about 1/3 of a cup and use 2/3 cup instead of 1 cup. You could also shorten the bake time by 5 minutes--most...
  21. My main reaction (at least, the one I was unable to ignore) to gluten was DH--and it was worse than poison ivy. It itched intensely, burned, oozed, and prickled constantly. I felt as though I was allergic to my own skin. I would have done ANYTHING to make it go away. I am generally strongly anti- prescription drugs, but I ended up on prednisone, which...
  22. Laura, thank you for the beautiful ideas. I will pass them on. Am sending up a prayer for your friend Christina. For what it's worth, as long as she has her arms, she can hug her children--and they can hug her....
  23. I understand what you mean, but since very few people in Europe and the Americas have NEVER eaten gluten, how can they rule gluten out as THE cause of autoimmune enteropathy? And even in Asia, where the gluten load in food is relatively tiny compared with that in the West, there is still gluten-containing soy sauce.
  24. Is it possible that they are one and the same? Like IBS and celiac, or (sometimes, maybe always) fibromyalgia and celiac, etc.?
