  1. My understanding is that the current definition (the so-called "gold standard") of celiac diagnosis is based on flattened villi. That's what they look FOR when they are trying to figure out if you have celiac disease. So the appearance of flattened villi is indeed confirmation that your symptoms are those of celiac. Yes, patchy damage is just as much...
  2. If she had problems before, her doctor should NEVER have started her on BC shots. I think she needs a new doctor. And possibly a malpractice attorney.
  3. Joe, Quaker rice cakes seem to make just about everybody with celiac sick. Is that the brand you were using? Instead of that, I would eat Frito's--most people here seem to be able to tolerate them, unless they have a corn intolerance. Unless you have problems with rice, I would eat plain rice at every meal, even breakfast.. And I would add soft cooked...
  4. Adding my prayers. If I were in her shoes, I would discontinue the birth control IMMEDIATELY. Who knows what preservatives and adjuvants are in those shots in addition to hormones that your body should only be producing on its own. Think about it--how many MEN would consent to injections of hormones? Oh, wait, that's right, the sports world already...
  5. The advice my OB/GYN gave me was " If you feel like "doing it" within 6 months after having a baby, that's a 100% guarantee that you are ovulating." I'm sorry, but I think you'll have to wait out those three weeks to find out. Hormones fluctuate after having a baby, and breastfeeding (as you may have found out) is NOT reliable birth control. My...
  6. Check out Open Original Shared Link for lots of recipes plus great little Japanese Bento-box-style lunch kits!
  7. I update this with tears in my eyes. I don't even know what kind of prayers to ask you guys for. I received this yesterday from Noah's dad: "Thank you for all of your kind words, thoughts, prayers and actions. I know that Noah would truly appreciate all of the support he has been given. Unfortunately, for all of us, his case prognosis does not look...
  8. Fantastic idea! I'd love to see something that competes with all the drug ads we are inundated with. You know, how they show all these people's tummies, and say something like, "bloating? ask your doctor for a prescription for ________." Well, why not one that says, "Tired of paying for all those prescriptions that are supposed to help your tummy...
  9. Joe, everyone else answered all your questions, but I wanted to add some questions of my own for you: 1) What are you eating and drinking now? What is your typical day's menu? Maybe we can help by offering suggestions on what you should be eating, and maybe there are some things that you are eating that might be preventing your gut from healing. ...
  10. Ooh--we love smoked salmon! Send it to us!!!! You could always donate unwanted food to soup kitchens, churches, synagogues, etc.
  11. Very true--in fact, babies are never allergic to human milk iself, though they DO react to what the mother has eaten. If the mother has eaten gluten, and the baby is sensitive to gluten, the baby will react. (This is why you're not supposed to take various meds while nursing, as they get into the milk. But for some reason, it doesn't stop the dairy farmers...
  12. I know that this is what the doctors say, but I disagree. It depends on what is triggering the immune system to attack the body. If gluten is the trigger, and you remove it, then the problem does go away. There are many people on this board whose various autoimmune disorders disappeared upon going gluten-free. Others have discovered other triggers...
  13. The food pyramid is WRONG--wheat is just not the huge nutrition source we are led to believe, and most of the wheat in the typical Western diet is, as mentioned above, white bread and white pasta, which contain none of the nutrition of whole wheat. And the nutrition that wheat products do have is mostly because it is "enriched," or sprayed with vitamins...
  14. I was wondering about other food intolerances, especially dairy, mercury toxicity (either from vaccines or dental amalgams if she has any), fluoride poisoning (I am woefully ignorant about this, but understand that fluoride is a potentially huge problem, especially in formula-fed babies, whose formula was mixed with fluoridated tap water), and Lyme disease...
  15. Fascinating--the drug for DH is usually prescribed for leprosy....
  16. Oh, NOW I see where it says "Sweden!" Oops. Sorry, Tranquility! But if it's the same in Sweden, then a lot of things that are labeled gluten-free aren't gluten-free.
  17. You make a lot of good points, and you're right, it IS puzzling! My understanding from the posts on this board is that all of the conditions you mention are in most if not all cases initially triggered by celiac. Ever since going off of gluten, my TSH levels have indicated that my synthroid dosage needs to be reduced. It had been steadily climbing...
  18. Yeah, that's pretty much what I have heard. The way I see it, if someone with celiac disease doesn't eat gluten, they do not have a disease (assuming all their symptoms clear up), they are then perfectly healthy. Just like, if you don't eat rat poison, you won't become violently ill. It's like the old joke: "Doctor, it hurts when I do this!" "Well...
  19. There's a really, really good quick flatbread recipe that takes 30 minutes start to finish--really! Open Original Shared Link I add a teaspoon of yeast and use twice as much baking powder and it comes out tasting like Italian Focaccia. You can add garlic and rosemary, or top it with pesto and cheese and broil til the cheese melts. I just cut into ...
  20. It's very likely that at least some (if not most) cases of gluten intolerance are actually early-stage celiac. Celiac is defined by villi damage to the small intestine. It takes TIME to damage the small intestine. Also, endoscopies, especially in a young child, are hit-and-miss at best. Villi damage even in adults is often patchy and not visible without...
  21. To me, cinnamon buns were always an excuse to have the warm, gooey, cinnamon sugar and the cream cheese icing! Seems to me, that wonderful flax skillet bread recipe that someone posted a few weeks ago (the one I've been making 3 times a week ever since: Open Original Shared Link would work well--just add more sugar to the basic recipe, drop big gobs...
  22. Evo is not dairy free, at least not the cat food (it has cottage cheese in the ingredients).
  23. Gluten does go into your milk, so no, it would not be safe for a celiac baby. If it's at all possible for you to go gluten-free while you are nursing, that would be way, way better than giving a celiac baby formula. There was an amazing mom on here in early 2006 whose baby had many food intolerances. The mom kept a very detailed log of what she ate...
  24. I was only on TPN for a couple of weeks when I couldn't keep anything down when I was pregnant. That's no help at all to you--I'm sorry. I wish I could come up with answers for you. The only thing I can think is to ask yet more questions. Could this possibly be vaccine-related? Did you get the flu shot, for example? I ask only because I have read...
  25. The only symptom I had of gluten withdrawal was desperately craving bread for 2 weeks. I made do with Fritos and Guittard chocolate chips (not together, but definitely in large quantities), and finally the cravings disappeared). The only symptom of gluten problems that I was aware of before going gluten-free was a truly horrific skin rash (DH), that...
