  1. I am wondering if it is worth saying that you DO remember a tick bite/rash.... I apologize if that seems unethical. Really, it goes against nearly everything I believe. But under the circumstances, when the medical system itself is far more unethical, isn't the important thing is to get tested?
  2. Thanks so much--I wonder if I can talk them into arranging a lunch stop at a landzeit? I'm getting hungry just reading your descriptions!
  3. Frequent head-aches would make me wonder about CO (carbon monoxide), especially if she only gets headaches at home. But there could be so many causes... I did get free mold tests from Home Depot a couple of years ago. I never used them because I already know we have mold, grrr. We are going to have to gut our bathroom. We just didn't have the money...
  4. I was also going to suggest that you check out the Lyme Disease thread and also look into mercury toxicity, bacterial infections, and systemic yeast infection. I would especially suspect Lyme Disease, as it seems that many of your symptoms are similar to those here who had positive diagnoses of Lyme Disease. If it is Lyme Disease, that might explain why...
  5. Thank you so much, everybody!
  6. You crack me up!!! You would hate this tour--it's travel all day, play rehearsal and concert, collapse, get up early the next day to go to the next city, and do it all over again. No fun
  7. Oh, wow--I guess I have this, too, but I never knew it had a name. (I just googled it after reading your post, and my jaw dropped!) My skin doesn't turn purple, but my thighs get that light, lacy, tingly sort of rash thing if I go jogging in cold weather. It also happens on my arms when I get out of a hot shower. Never could figure that one out! I...
  8. Last time I was there was before I was gluten-free; I had schnitzel at practically every meal, it seemed, but obviously that's out of the question this time! I especially need to find something I can bring with me on the bus ride from Vienna to Budapest, and on the plane from Budapest to Zagreb, as we will be traveling from mid-morning to mid-afternoon...
  9. I will be in all these places for work, traveling with a group, with absolutely zero possibility of traveling by myself. I will be bringing some supplies, of course, but we are on the road for 3 weeks, and I'm only allowed one suitcase. I don't even know how to say "gluten-free" in Spanish!!! Any suggestions on food that travels well? We will...
  10. I'll be traveling to Europe for work, and have a very tough schedule with no possibility of traveling independently from the rest of the group. I'll have my peanut butter, canned salmon, and rice crackers, but I'm only allowed one suitcase for 3 weeks, so I can't pack 3 weeks of that! Does anybody have any experience gluten-free on the go with these cities...
  11. Why not make the recipe as directed, substituting corn meal or Potato Buds for the bread crumbs and soy sour cream for the sour cream? The soy sour cream is very good--we are not dairy free, but I have used it occasionally and nobody noticed!
  12. If you have any villi damage, that affects your ability to produce lactase (which is what helps to digest the lactose in milk products). Are you okay with coconut? Sharon's Sorbet makes a fantastic coconut sorbet--but it IS very high in sugar, so if candida is a possibility for you, it wouldn't be a good thing for you to eat...
  13. Constipation doesn't happen because you are deficient in prescription stool softener! However, if he is constipated, you can certainly change his diet (gluten or no gluten) to rectify the constipation. I would hesitate to use a pharmaceutical preparation without trying natural dietary changes first. Stone fruits (peaches, nectarines, plums, and...
  14. Actually, you can if your celiac presents primarily as DH. There are also biopsy-diagnosed celiacs who have no apparent intestinal symptoms; in most cases, they were scoped due to an otherwise puzzling vitamin deficiency.
  15. Jimbo, the way I see it, the damage caused to your intestines (which is what earned you the celiac diagnosis in the first place, that's what they looked for when they scoped you) healed during your 6 years on the gluten-free diet. This is exactly what is supposed to happen on a gluten-free diet. Now that you no longer have a leaky gut, the gluten protein...
  16. Neesee, I think you've misunderstood. The analogy to rat poison isn't suggesting that the rest of the world will get if they eat gluten. But many, many celiac sufferers are terribly sick for days, even weeks, even from a small amount of gluten. To them, it is literally a poison, and for them to knowingly eat "just a little bit" is the same as their consuming...
  17. All I can think of (besides for the great links provided above) is to say (if your doctor does blow you off): "Excuse me, but I feel like you are blowing me off. I have researched this, I am knowledgeable about this, and I feel very strongly that in view of the family history of celiac, it should at the very least be ruled out. So even if you think I...
  18. Thank you so much for posting this!!!! I am originally from Glencoe, and whenever I trek back to visit my folks, I have either packed gluten-free stuff to bring with me, or else gone to Trader Joe's (limited supply, but better than nothing, and at least they had gluten-free bagels for Sunday bagels and lox) Of course, I am kicking myself, because last...
  19. Just wanted to say that I TOTALLY disagree with any doctor that says that green poop 6x/day is normal. Why on earth do they always think that symptoms of problems are NORMAL?????? Mind you, it might not be a huge problem. But it's not normal unless he's eating 3 pounds of spinach every day. (He isn't, is he???)
  20. That looks much better! I'd leave berries out entirely at this point--they are not easy for an embattled tummy. Peaches (and all "stone" fruits--fruits with large stone pits) are great if you are constipated, but not necessarily good for diarrhea. Applesauce (without any added sugar) might be good, though (remember the BRA diet). Chicken can be poached...
  21. You might want to make sure that the rice cakes you are eating are not made by Quaker--people on this board have complained for months about wheat cross-contamination in Quaker Rice Cakes. For that matter, you might want to read the label of your rice cakes. Sometimes wheat starch is added to the strangest things (like rice cakes)!
  22. People here might be able so spot some clues if you post a typical day's diet. Many of us had to temporarily (or permanently) give up dairy until our guts healed.
  23. Just googled "vaccines and asthma"--there are studies linking the two.
  24. Rachel, question for your friend: Was her daughter breastfed or bottle-fed? THat may have some bearing on the asthma. I have read that asthma can be triggered by dairy, and we know from this board that it can also be a sign of gluten intolerance. Also--if anyone had asked me if I had digestive problems before I went gluten-free, I would have said ...
