  1. Poor dingo! Is she on a grain-free, dairy-free food? That's what Dogtorj recommends. I have found one for cats, and it's made a huge difference for our diabetic cat. It seems logical that if gluten can cause rheumatoid arthritis and thyroid problems in humans, it can in dogs, too.
  2. Are you in England? My understanding is that it England, Corn Flakes and Rice Krispies are labeled as gluten-free--ABD THEY'RE NOT--they contain barley malt. Also, anything with wheat starch does contain gluten. Yes, I know in the UK it's still considered gluten-free, but apparently, most celiacs do react to it, so it likely does contain gluten. ...
  3. This is why I keep saying that defining celiac disease only by villi damage is INSANE! It's like saying that peanut allergies can only be diagnosed in people who go into anaphylactic shock after eating peanuts.
  4. I've read that cinnamon helps metabolism of sugar, and have seen cinnamon capsules at the health food store. Does anybody know if this helps for sure? (I suppose it couldn't hurt, right?)
  5. Red blood in a stool sample is usually assumed to be from the rectum (fissures, or hemorrhoids), not from the intestinal tract, which would usually be indicated by black, tarry stools.
  6. I forgot to add: My kids made latkes at Sunday School last week, and I called the director to ask if I could send in some potato starch/gluten-free flour for the 3rd grade class to use instead of flour, since #2 son is off gluten. She went out herself, bought 2 pounds of potato starch, and the WHOLE Sunday school had gluten-free latkes.
  7. I'm so glad you wrote this--I was afraid I'd be bragging if I was the only one whose family accomodates! Even friends who have us over for dinner go WAY out of their way (without my EVER having asked) to make sure I can eat the whole meal. Maybe you can show this thread to your family? HEY, RUTHLA'S FAMILY!!!! WOULD YA PLEASE MAKE THE...
  8. Happy Hannukah! (Chanuka) (Hanukkah) (whatever) You can use La Choy soy sauce, many store brands of soy sauce like Target andWalmart (gotta read the labels), and Bragg's Liquid Aminos, which is very similar to soy sauce. Also, Lea & Perrins Worcestershire sauce is gluten-free in the States (but not in Canada, for some reason). I would not...
  9. I'm so sorry you are still in pain. {{{HUGS}}} From now on, you MUST be totally on top of things. You will have to act like both a doctor and a lawyer. If you know that something is terribly wrong with your poop (like, it's white), you have to take the initiative. Save a poop sample BEFORE you go to the doctor. It's not enough to tell them your poop...
  10. You probably resent that the medical system let you down for so long!!! I'm wondering if non-wheat gluten (barley, rye, or oats) bother you, too. If so, I would guess that you do indeed have either celiac or gluten intolerance (aka "pre-celiac"). Either way, welcome aboard, and I hope you feel less sad as you hang out here! We have lots of great...
  11. Glad to hear that things are going better for you! I just wanted to let you know that my #1 son was born at 37 weeks weighing 4 1/2 pounds, was diagnosed with IUGR, and has probable gluten/casein issues. I had him on "gluten-lite" even before I knew about gluten, just because I didn't think that there was much nutrition in bread. I went heavy on fish...
  12. We like the bread recipe that Juliet posted so much, we make double batch 2-3 times a week! My gluten-eating family members all agree that it tastes better than regular gluteny sandwich bread. I do add a teaspoon or 2 of yeast to each batch, and double the baking powder--the baking powder helps it rise better, and the yeast makes it taste like regular...
  13. If you have the name of the doc at the walk-in clinic, maybe you can send him a registered letter? Tell him everything that has happened since you left his office, and repeat what his instructions (IV and unltrasound) were and the fact that those things never happened. Send a registered copy to the hopsital where the ER was as well and keep a copy for yourself...
  14. Here is a Rachael Ray recipe for herb roasted turkey breast. I make this all the time with chicken breast, too--it cooks more quickly than the turkey breast. Substitute olive oil for the butter that goes under the skin, and use chicken broth instead of butter for basting, or just skip the basting part. You can leave out the lemon peel if you think...
  15. You may have put your finger on it. I have very bad luck with every person I know when I make demands and/or try to get respect! But I have great luck when I plead, beg, and compliment... sample: "You guys are such great cooks, could you PLEASE help me come up with some decent-tasting-but-safe-for-my-medical-situation dinners before I either die...
  16. There is also a huge debate about Rice Dream Rice Milk, which claims to be gluten-free, but uses barley enzymes in the processing, and is actually .02% gluten, which means it can legally call itself gluten-free, but it seems to cause bad reactions in those who are extremely sensitive to gluten (like, um, celiacs ).
  17. I was also thinking heavy fat content, zero fruit and veggie content (little or no fiber!).
  18. Try a search of wheat grass on this site. I remember a thread a year or so ago, and everybody did say that wheat grass juice does contain gluten. I had terrible diarrhea both times I had wheat grass juice--it started about half an hour after drinking it. And I didn't have obvious intestinal reactions to gluten at the time.
  19. Sorry, Jenny, I didn't read your sig, and didn't realize you were so limited. I got stomach aches from the gluten-free flours and the gluten-free pastas, too--it took several months before I was able to eat them without stomach aches. Brown rice was the same--but plain, Japanese, short grain, white rice was just fine. I don't know why. Now...
  20. ONe possibility: our supermarket put out a list of gluten-free flours--and Bob's Red Mill Spelt flour was on the list! Spelt (as you probably know) is WHEAT, and therefore major gluten. ALso, if you are on any meds, maybe they might either contain gluten or else possibly cause diarrhea and therefore leaky gut, and that might be your fat absorption problem...
  21. It sounds awfully frustrating! What if you were to invite them to your house for a gluten-free cooking date? Grill chicken and veggies? Maybe have them come up with some good marinade recipes for the chicken, and tell you what ingredients to buy in advance? (So you could make sure that they are gluten-free!) And maybe you could make some gluten...
  22. Oh, they sound heavenly--but I don't like margarine. Would butter work? Or shortening? Or should I use coconut oil?
  23. As stated above, celiac disease is NOT a gluten allergy!!! It is a very serious autoimmune disorder, but most of us would test negative for gluten allergy, since we are not allergic. It's good that he thought of having you go off gluten, but I'm kind of shocked that he didn't run the Celiac Panel bloodwork in addition to the wheat allergy test, since celiac...
  24. What nobody made a big fuss about (and should have) was the fact that there was wheat gluten in the pet food in the first place. Dogs' and cats' stomachs are not meant to consume grains--they don't exactly harvest them in the wild, do they? They are carnivores, and should be fed meat protein. Wheat gluten is a cheap way of upping the protein on paper...
  25. That's a good question. I have been wondering, also, whether rice flours sold by companies with American health food stores cachet are actually made by those companies, or if they are just repackaged Asian rice flour. I'm especially curious about the rice flours used in bread and cake mixes--they don't say where their ingredients come from. In addition...
